Chapter 207: Feel Free To Return
“Kelsie doesn’t need to know everything about me,” Caleb said. “But enough about that spoilsport― I heard the news! How are you feeling? This is your second marriage, but it’s even more ill-fated than ours. At least we made it out of city hall with our rings and wedding certificates.”
“And that was just the first step into hell,” Amelia quipped back with gritted teeth. “Excuse me, I must go.”
As she tried to sidestep Caleb and leave, his arm shot out and grabbed her wrist. Amelia barely managed to dodge, and Ronan was quick to pull Amelia back a safe distance and out of Caleb’s reach. Caleb clicked his tongue in annoyance just as Ronan cleared his throat warningly.
“Caleb Walton, mind your manners,” he said. “Who are you to grab a random lady like that in public?”
“A random lady?” Caleb echoed with a bark of laughter. “Amelia was my wife. We are more than strangers and have done more intimate things than you can even imagine. Isn’t that right, dear?”
A shiver of disgust crawled all over Amelia’s body at his words. “Leave. Me. Alone,” she said with emphasis. “When we signed those divorce papers, you made it very clear to draw the line between us. Once married or not, I no longer have anything to do with you.”
“That was the past,” Caleb said. “I have offered a reconciliation before, haven’t I? We can return to the good old days― the only difference now is that you won’t have to work a single day in your life any longer!”
Then, Caleb laughed as he glanced at Ronan from the corner of his eye.
“Then again, you two might not even have jobs anymore after Matteo Montgomery leaves the office since you’re both his secretaries. He’s no longer the CEO of X’el International. Oh how the great have fallen!”
“Then I’ll find a different job,” Amelia said. “Anything’s better than sticking around you.”
Wanting to say nothing else to him, Amelia grabbed Ronan by the elbow and tugged him past Caleb. She could hear Caleb’s laughter echoing behind her even as she left, accompanied by the sounds of nurses trying to get him to lower his volume.
“It’s always better than marrying a pauper!” Caleb yelled after them. “At least whatever I did, I didn’t get another woman pregnant during my time with you! Rethink my offer, Amelia!”
Even though she hated to admit it, Amelia’s heart clenched painfully at the thought. She only stopped once they were out of the hospital and by the street side, her chest heaving up and down as she panted for breath. It wasn’t that the walk was strenuous, but the anger, indignation, and fear of it all came crashing upon her all at the same time.
“Are you alright, Amelia?” Ronan asked worriedly, bending over to have a look at her face. “Maybe we should go back to the hospital. Have a doctor look at you―”
“I’m okay,” she said. Lies. “I will be okay.”
Ronan pursed his lips. After a brief moment of silence, he said, “We will find out whether or not Emmeline is telling the truth. If the child is indeed Matteo’s, we could bring this case to the police. She no longer has the backing of the Hawthorne family to protect her from the law, especially if she committed assault.”
“What if she flips the script?” Amelia asked. “She could blame it on Matteo instead― there have been plenty of cases of such a thing happening.”
“There has to be some form of evidence against her,” Ronan said. “Don’t worry too much about it. Just because Matteo is no longer the CEO of X’el doesn’t mean that he is handicapped. He can still take care of himself very well.”
Amelia’s heart was heavy. She could only numbly nod.
Out of the blue, two buzzes caught their attention. Both of them turned to their respective phones to see a message had just come in. It was from X’el’s human resource department, and both their phones had the same message.
‘Come down to the office first thing tomorrow morning,’ the text read. ‘We will need to start the resignation process.’

Amelia was as nervous as she was on her first day of work.
Matteo hadn’t returned home last night, and he only stated that there was something he had to settle quickly. Ever since the last time they met at the hospital, Amelia hadn’t seen him. That only added to the gnawing in her chest.
She was dressed in office attire, stepping in for the first time in what felt like forever. Between everything that had been going on, she hadn’t spent that much time in the office despite her position as Matteo’s secretary. In fact, it was as though her title was mainly for show.
Her desk had already gathered a thin layer of dust, and when she arrived at the front lobby, the receptionist offered her a pitiful look before directing her to Matteo’s old office.
When she stepped in, Ronan was already there. He was originally hunched over the desk, a pen in hand as he scribbled something. When he heard her enter, he stood up straight and turned around. Judging by the grim expression on his face, Amelia knew what was going on. Not that she didn’t already have a guess anyway.
Caleb had been right, unfortunately.
Now that Matteo was no longer the CEO or employed at X’el, there was no need for him to have secretaries. She wouldn’t even be surprised if Matteo’s manpower were all fired from their positions as well and replaced with people who would support Aiden and his mother.
Speaking of which, Catherine Laine sat in Matteo’s chair, the HR personnel standing right beside her, watching Ronan sign the resignation papers. When Amelia entered, Catherine’s smile widened.

“Amelia,” she said, “just on time. Here are the documents you have to sign, and the list of things you will need to hand over after your resignation before you leave.”
Amelia said nothing, merely glancing at the contract Catherine had gestured to on the table. Her eyes glazed over, but even without looking at it with great detail, she could spot a few lines that were less than beneficial to her, including the clause that stated she would not be able to work in a different company in the same industry for the next five years.
She clenched her fists tightly before looking dead into Catherine’s eyes. “These were not the clauses when I first signed the employment contract.”
“The terms have been changed,” Catherine said. “Either you sign this and get the severance pay, or you can resign on your own terms like Ronan here and pay the compensation.”
