Chapter 211: Doctor Jules
Amelia stared at her evenly.
“Why shouldn’t I be here? I need to know if your assault on my fiancé has resulted in a child.”
She squeezed Matteo’s hand in comfort. If she could, she would have shoved him behind her so that she could handle Emmeline’s nonsense on her own.
Meanwhile, Matteo glowered at the doctor who was waiting next to Emmeline. He was a nondescript man in a white coat, with a pair of wire-rim glasses on his face. Matteo disliked him on principle, simply because he couldn’t be sure that Emmeline had not sunk her claws into him.
“Let’s get started already. I have plans after this. Who are you?” he asked with narrowed eyes, fully intending to get Ronan to do a background check on this man.
The man’s eyebrow twitched at the rude address. “I’m Doctor Jules, from the gynecology department. Nice to meet you. I’ll be the one collecting your DNA samples for the lab to analyze.”
“A doctor needs to be here for this?” Amelia raised an eyebrow. “All Emmeline needs to provide is a bit of blood, and Matteo only needs a cheek swab.”
She had asked Isaac for more details, just to find out what procedures were included so that they weren’t fooled by Emmeline.
“A nurse could do it and pass it on to the relevant department. May we know which department is actually in charge of this so we can speak to them directly?” Amelia added.
Doctor Jules huffed, upset at the disrespect shown to someone of his position. Rich people were all so haughty― so far, only Miss Emmeline had treated him with respect!
Emmeline crossed her arms and spoke up.
“You know nothing,” Emmeline sniffed, “I am a pregnant woman now, so of course I’m more fragile than the ordinary person. Doctor Jules is just doing what every caring, responsible doctor should do. What if something happens to me and my baby because of the lack of blood? Or maybe that’s what you actually want in the end. I bet you would love nothing more than to see me miscarry!”
Amelia rolled her eyes, but to her surprise, it was Matteo who answered. “Yes. That would solve a lot of my issues.”
Emmeline’s mouth fell open. At once, her eyes filled with tears, as if they were cued by an invisible director. Doctor Jules was similarly horrified.
“Matteo! How could you say something so cruel!”
Matteo shrugged nonchalantly. “Do you need me to repeat it so that you can record me and further slander my name?”
Emmeline’s face purpled in indignation as she spluttered, trying to form a reply.
“What’s this nonsense?” Catherine Montgomery’s loud voice echoed loudly as she practically ripped the door from its hinges, stepping into the room as though she owned the place. Doctor Jules immediately gave a polite bow to the new visitor.
Amelia was suddenly fiercely glad that at least Emmeline had the foresight to stay in a private room. If this happened in the hospital lobby, she shuddered to think what the headlines would make of Matteo’s behavior.
“Godma!” Emmeline cried out, as fat tears rolled down her cheeks. She was the very image of a forlorn pitiful princess, destined to tug at the heartstrings.
“My poor dear…” Catherine stepped forward and embraced Emmeline, patting her hair softly with all the tenderness of a mother cat looking after a wayward kitten. “I cannot believe Matteo would say something so heartless to you. Don’t worry, I’ll handle this.”
She then whirled around and glared hotly at Matteo.
“Listen here, Matteo Montgomery, I won’t allow you to bully my goddaughter even if you’re my son! Emmeline will give birth to a healthy baby, I’ll stake my life on it!”
“You don’t even treat me like your son to begin with,” Matteo pointed out unapologetically, not even bothering to respond to the second half of her statement.
Amelia wanted to sigh to herself. While that was true, Matteo didn’t need to antagonize them further.
“Miss Emmeline, please calm down!” Doctor Jules said, quickly guiding Emmeline and Catherine to their seats. “I need to remind you that your pregnancy is still within the first trimester. It’s a very fragile time, so do try to keep your emotions in check. As for Mr. Matteo, I would like you to watch your words. Such behavior is unbecoming of a gentleman.”
Catherine scoffed loudly. “He dares to bring an outsider to this meeting, knowing that her presence will upset Emmeline. Clearly he is no gentleman. It’s lucky I showed up when I did… your father will hear about this! To think you would tell Emmeline you wanted her to lose her child!”
Emmeline sniffled, looking particularly aggrieved. She wiped the last of her tears on her face. “Doctor Jules, how do you expect me to remain calm when the man that took advantage of me wants me to have a miscarriage! You heard him loud and clear!”
Matteo scowled. “You took advantage of me when I was drugged. You have no room to cast stones.”
“You―”

“Let’s just get on with the test,” Amelia said. Her temples were starting to hurt. She had a feeling they would be here for hours, arguing in circles. “Doctor Jules, can you start drawing her blood now?”
Doctor Jules nodded and started preparing the materials. Catherine fussed over Emmeline lovingly, while Emmeline put on a brave face as the doctor drew out a syringe full of blood.
“Now you can go and rest first. If you feel fine after half an hour, you can go home,” the doctor said comfortingly. Emmeline nodded.
Then he turned to Matteo, his eyes significantly colder than before. He grabbed a cheek swab in his hand.
“Open your mouth, please, I’ll need to take a swab.”
Matteo complied, only to frown when Doctor Jules all but scraped his inner cheek so harshly it was as though the swabbing tool was Matteo’s long-lost lover from a past life, out to seek revenge.
“Sorry, please bear with it,” he said icily. “I need to get enough cells to test. Wouldn’t want to make a mistake and force you to take responsibility for a child that you don’t want.”
He then put the tool into a ziplock bag, next to Emmeline’s vial of blood.
“Fair enough,” Matteo replied with just as much warmth. “In that case, you should be willing to let me see you transport the samples to the lab.”
Doctor Jules’s nostrils flared up in irritation at his domineering behavior.
“Now you’re messing with doctors too? Is there no end to your audacity?” Catherine stood up and demanded. “You should be glad your mother is gone; otherwise, she would be so ashamed of your behavior!”
