Chapter 223: Because… Amelia
“Nothing… It’s nothing, don’t worry,” Amelia said, waving a nonchalant hand.
However, her future husband wasn’t so easily fooled. If it wasn’t dire, Amelia would never have pushed him aside. He narrowed his eyes in suspicion, looking over Amelia more carefully.
She did seem as tired as he felt. His eyes focused on her stomach, which… didn’t look any different than usual. Then again, it wasn’t as though he had been paying much attention to her abdomen to begin with.
Also, what did he expect to see? He mentally scolded himself for hoping to see a slight bump, similar to the one Emmeline tried to flaunt at the dinner earlier.
Amelia saw where he was looking and hastily cleared her throat. “I’m suffering from digestive issues. Luckily I have my very own live-in doctor to care for me, if not things might be worse.”
“Is it bad?” Matteo asked, still worried. “Have you been drinking enough water? Do you need to sit down?”
“It’s alright,” Amelia said, deciding to drag Matteo to one of the couches to sit on. “Honestly, I suspect it was due to the stress after Emmeline’s reveal. I hadn’t been eating or sleeping well… It’s honestly incredible that I’m only suffering from indigestion and not something worse.”
She tried to comfort Matteo by making light of the issue, however, Matteo’s mouth twisted like he had sucked on a lemon. He couldn’t forget Amelia’s weary expression and the dim look in her eyes when she finally told him she had enough. Perhaps she was already suffering from digestive issues back then, but Matteo wasn’t paying close enough attention to her.
He was too busy trying to fight the fires in his backyard.
“I’m sorry,” Matteo said, rubbing her stomach. “Have you taken your medicine? What did Isaac say?”
“He told me to eat small meals more frequently, to avoid greasy food, and eat more vegetables. To sleep early and all.” Amelia shrugged. “But never mind me, how have you been? How did your family take the news?”
“Very angrily, but what else can they do?” Matteo asked rhetorically. “I have refused to play a part in their games, so now they have nothing they can use to control me.”
He gave Amelia a recap of all that happened during the dinner, and Amelia could only squeeze his hand tightly when he mentioned the part about his mother’s bangle.
“So… Emmeline is still planning on having the child?” Amelia’s mouth fell open in surprise. “She wants to be a single mom with a ruined reputation?”
“She can if she wants to.” Matteo shrugged. “But it will not be acknowledged by me.”
“Matteo… that’s a powder keg waiting to go off.” Amelia sighed. The issue was far from over, but at least they have crossed this one hurdle. She could only take things one step at a time.
“I’m still suspicious that Emmeline’s child is not mine,” Matteo growled out. “I’ll spare no effort to investigate the hospital lab and that doctor. I don’t care if I have to overturn every single stone in Sol City, I’m going to get to the bottom of this conspiracy.”
Amelia could only nod.
A sharp knock at the door interrupted their conversation. Amelia began to stand, wanting to open the door.
“Isaac must be back,” Amelia said, but Matteo forced her to sit back down by gently pressing on her shoulders.
“I’ll open the door. You should be resting more,” Matteo said, and he pressed a quick kiss to Amelia’s lips.
He opened the door, only to see his own face staring back at him.
No wait. It wasn’t his own face. It was Aiden’s, and he had a similarly stunned look on his face.
“Matteo? What are you doing here?”
“This should be my question!” Matteo growled out, “Are you here to harass Amelia?”
“Excuse me? Brother, I live here!” Aiden exclaimed. At Matteo’s wide-eyed look of disbelief, a wicked grin bloomed on Aiden’s face and he cackled. “Surprise! I guess no one told you about this. Harsh, Amelia, I thought you loved him,” Aiden said, purposely making his voice louder so Amelia could hear him from inside the house.
Was she in the toilet hurling her guts out again?
“Don’t bullshit,” Matteo said. “Dimitri would never let you through the apartment.”
“He didn’t, Isaac invited me so he had no choice but to agree,” Aiden replied breezily. “Can you let me in now? I want to rest.” He peered his head through the door and saw Amelia on the couch. “Amelia, tell him to let me through!”
Matteo whirled around to stare at her, a faint look of betrayal in his eyes. Amelia shot him an apologetic look before standing up to pull Matteo back, creating enough space for Aiden to slide his way into the house.

Aiden then shucked off his boots and dumped his motorcycle helmet on the dining table, whistling idly.
“Matteo, Aiden is indeed staying with me and Isaac for the time being,” Amelia said, and Matteo nearly choked on his tongue at the confirmation of this turn of events.
“Why?!” Matteo spat out with gritted teeth. “You have your own house. You have my office. Why do you wish to stay here?”
His eyes roamed around the house. Now that Matteo was paying more attention, he could see bits of his brother’s essence scattered all over the living room. There were the shoes he favored, along with the figurines on the shelves and the scent of his cologne in the air.
Jealousy twisted his guts.
“I would love to remain staying at the fancy mansion with my meals and chores all catered for, but unfortunately, Emmeline is currently living the princess life there too. You should know better than anyone how tiring it is to deal with her since I’m guessing you did meet her for dinner.” Aiden pretended to shudder.
“That doesn’t explain why you are here, out of all places,” Matteo seethed. “You could have bought another house, rented another place―”
“Why should I?” Aiden raised an eyebrow mischievously. “Amelia’s living here, so where else would I be?”
