Chapter 238: Parting Gift
Kelsie gritted her teeth.
She knew she hadn’t been hallucinating when she heard the gun go off the first time― otherwise, her windows shouldn’t have given way so easily. This would be hard to explain when she inevitably sent it for maintenance, but that was the least of her worries right now.
Turning her eyes onto the road, she turned all the gears in place before speeding off into the night, soaring down the fairly empty highway at a speed that was way higher than the limit.
“Is this what you finally contacted me for?” After a while, Kelsie finally broke the silence and asked, peering at Caleb’s reflection through the rearview mirror.
He had finally placed the gun down on the backseat, his hand placed over his eyes as his head leaned back against the headrest. If it weren’t for the subtle rise and fall of his chest, Kelsie would’ve even suspected that he was dead. His injuries did seem bad enough for him to succumb to them.
Aiden Montgomery sure hadn’t held back his punches. Good. Seeing those bruises and cuts on Caleb did give Kelsie an odd sense of satisfaction. He deserved it.
Her eyes lingered on the weapon for an extra few seconds. The fact that he wasn’t holding onto it fueled her boldness and allowed her to properly say what was on her mind again.
“You’ve refused my calls and ignored my messages, only to come running to me once you’ve got the police on your tail?”
“Keep quiet, Kelsie, I am trying to sleep,” Caleb mumbled, his voice hoarse.
“I bet you’ve had an eventful day, haven’t you?” Kelsie retorted.
One more glance at the backseat and once she was sure that Caleb wasn’t looking, she made a sharp right turn and exited the highway.
“Were you ever planning on giving me a proper reply? What you said last time on the phone was utter bullshit. I am still a Friesent, not a random small-town girl you can make use of or play with for a couple of years before throwing away.”
“That was the reply,” Caleb said without looking up. “We’re done. It’s over between us.”
The car slowly rolled to a stop.
“And that’s why you’re going after Amelia Kentwood again? After you so ruthlessly divorced her for me.” Kelsie scoffed in disbelief. “I guess I should’ve known― what comes around goes around. A leopard will never change its spots. You’re a fucking asshole, Caleb Walton. She will never take you back now that she has better choices.”
“I would’ve been her only choice if it hadn’t been for Aiden Montgomery, that son of a bitch―!”
Caleb paused when he realized where they were at. He immediately furrowed his eyebrows, sitting up as he surveyed their surroundings.
“What did you bring me here for?” Caleb hotly asked. “I said bring me to your apartment.”
“We’re done, like you said,” Kelsie replied, keeping her chin tilted high. “You’re lucky I didn’t cart your ass to the nearest police station, Caleb. Consider this my final gift to you after all these years together, even if you strayed away during our time apart and betrayed me after.”
“Watch your words before I blow your fucking brains out―”
The door of Kelsie’s car opened and an arm swiftly dragged him out of the backseat before he could grab and aim his gun properly. The weapon fell out of the car with him, and he toppled in a mess on the ground, rolling a little.
Once he was out, the car door was closed, and a man walked tiredly to the driver’s seat window.
“Thank you, Miss Friesent,” the older man said, speaking with Kelsie. “I trust this will be kept a secret?”
“He better start running before dawn,” Kelsie said, glaring at Caleb on the ground. “I can’t assure you the cops won’t be here tomorrow.”
“That’s all that’s needed,” Will Walton said with a polite smile. “Please send your father my regards.”
Kelsie said nothing. She merely glanced one last time at Caleb before turning her steering wheel, quickly reversing and speeding out of the Walton residence. She left a trail of smoke in her wake, fanned directly into Caleb’s face as he coughed and hacked, waving it away.
“Dad…”
“You have the guts to come back alive,” Will Walton growled. “If it were up to me, you should’ve died in that warehouse!”
Caleb struggled just to barely even sit up so that he could look at his father properly. His face paled.
“You know?”

“The whole of Solara fucking knows!” Will Walton all but yelled, throwing his hand up in the air in a fit of anger. “You’re lucky that Kelsie Friesent didn’t have you arrested immediately.”
“Oh, so now you’re all polite to her,” Caleb said with a scoff. “You were also the one that told me to cut all ties with her because of Friesent Corp’s decline. And now look at us! You’ve filed for bankruptcy while they’re still standing!”
“No thanks to you,” Will Walton hissed. “I have made a fatal mistake by thinking you were ready to handle the company. But instead of buttering up to the Hawthornes, you have gone and made them your number one enemy! What were you thinking?! Have you no brain?! Did the years spent outside reduce you into nothing but a fool?!”
Will Walton’s words were endlessly painful, jabbing into Caleb’s ego again and again.
“Pack your bags, Caleb. You’re heading to Phealpolis tomorrow. We’ll find a private jet to fly you out to a further country from there, and―”
“You’re sending me out of the country?” Caleb asked, stunned. “Can’t you just pay the cops off?”
“Which part of ‘bankrupt’ do you not understand?” Will snapped. “You’ve offended the most powerful man of Sol City. Even if Amelia Kentwood hasn’t told him yet, he will eventually find out in due time. Horace Hawthorne is a more cunning man than you think.”
“How did you know that the woman I was with was Amelia―”
That question earned him a whack over his head.
“Your mother told me everything,” Will Walton said. “Pack your bags. You two will head out of the country and hide until this blows over.”
“I am staying!” Caleb insisted. He stumbled back onto his feet and grabbed his father’s arms. “You need to find a scapegoat for this, Dad! I… I can make this right! I can make Amelia mine again, I promise!”
Will Walton’s lips tightened into a fine line. He didn’t believe in Caleb’s capabilities, but this son of his was good for nothing at this point. He could no longer depend on him for anything else, if not for this.
In the end, Will Walton said, “One last chance. If you mess this up, don’t blame me for sending you behind bars myself.”
