Chapter 240: Letters From Home
“But then again, I see no future for him if he chooses to stay in this city. It’s not as though he can rejoin high society, and I don’t think someone like him would be fine living as a normal person with his identity hidden forever.” Isaac frowned.
Amelia had to snort.
Caleb had done his best to cosplay a regular person for all those years. Plastic surgery was always a viable option, and while Caleb might not be open to it, if it was between changing the shape of his nose and spending a decade in a grimy prison, Amelia had no doubt he would change his appearance in a heartbeat.
If push comes to shove, she had no doubt his father would fake an identity for him to stay hidden. Whether or not it would be successful was another story altogether.
Matteo gripped his phone tightly and threw it against the bed, causing it to spring up due to the mattress. It made him feel better, but only slightly.
“Amelia, I need to arrange a bodyguard for you,” Matteo said seriously. “Now that Caleb is on the loose and his mother is in custody, there’s no telling what he would do.”
Amelia could only agree, even though part of her was reluctant to be shadowed by a stranger.
“Why not just hire me?” Aiden chimed in. “I’m great at this bodyguarding gig. Just look at my performance a few days ago!”
Matteo’s eyebrow twitched again. “Did you forget that you now have an actual job? You’re the CEO of X’el Incorporated.”
“And Amelia is my assistant,” Aiden argued. “I just want the best for her. Her safety means my job would also be easier. Besides, as my assistant, Amelia will be with me constantly.”
There was something hidden between Aiden’s words that meant more than what they did superficially. Instantly, Isaac’s eyes widened as he looked back and forth between both men. Similarly, Amelia frowned, stepping between them.
“A bodyguard sounds good,” Amelia said, smiling at Matteo.
Then, she turned to look at Aiden. “But you will need to spend your time and effort clearing those documents and attending those meetings. Besides, your mother hates me enough. I would like to stay out of her radar as much as possible, thank you very much.”
“I will have Ronan arrange a security team for you starting tomorrow,” Matteo said. He then turned his attention to Isaac. “How would you like to be hired as Amelia’s private doctor?”
“Me?” Isaac squeaked, gesturing to himself. “If it’s regarding her pregnancy, it’s best you hire a professional. I’m not skilled in obstetrics and gynecology. But I can arrange something with the doctors in my clinic. I’m sure I can find someone fit for the job.”
Matteo nodded, pleased, and they returned to packing. They left shortly after with Amelia’s belongings in tow, stopping by Dimitri’s place for a short while to say their farewells before returning to Matteo’s penthouse.
After they were gone, the house seemed eerily quiet, so much so that it felt mildly uncomfortable even for Isaac.
“What are you going to do now?” Isaac asked, tucking his hands into the pockets of his pants. “Are you moving back home?”
“I don’t really want to,” Aiden muttered with a sigh. He winced when his wound brushed past the furniture accidentally, glaring at the item as though it was the one that caused him to be like this in the first place.
“She’s going to be there for a while,” Isaac commented. “Your family seems rather keen on having you return.”
With that said, Isaac pulled out a stash of envelopes, all sealed. However, they all carried the same return address― the Montgomery family mansion.
“I’ve not checked the letterbox in a couple of days. These accumulated there,” Isaac said. “They’re all addressed to you, though I’m not sure why they didn’t just drop you a message.”
Maybe it was because Aiden had deliberately muted all of their contacts and tossed them to the back of his mind. Nevertheless, he took the envelopes that Isaac held out, looking through them one after another.
“Are you chasing me out?” Aiden asked, trying his best to add a bit of humor in his tone, but with his rugged, beaten-up look, it looked more threatening than anything.
“‘Course not,” Isaac said with a shrug. “Just thought that you could at least go back and visit them. At least you still have them around to care for you. If you’re staying here just because of an outsider, maybe you can talk to them about it.”
Leaving those as his final words, Isaac turned on his heel and left, retreating back into his own bedroom. It was a tiring day, after all. However, Aiden didn’t do the same.
He stared at the envelopes, looking at the senders’ names one by one. Most of them were from his mother, some were labeled as a letter directly from the residence. One of them, however, stood out.
From: Emmeline Hawthorne.
Aiden raised an eyebrow and peeled it open callously, unfolding the piece of paper inside. It was neatly typed and printed in simple black and white, nothing fancy. However, he could catch a whiff of her perfume embedded into the paper even after all those days traveling via the courier.
His eyes scanned through the words, a frown increasingly growing. His grip strength grew without him realizing it, and it wasn’t before long the paper was crushed in his hand.

“Fucking son of a bitch,” Aiden cursed under his breath.
Walking to the stove, he switched it on and burnt the paper to crisp, along with the rest of the letters that were sent from the Montgomery residence.
All Emmeline Hawthorne knew was to play underhanded tactics just to win the game. Aiden had been foolish to be tempted back then just in the name of fun.
With all evidence turned to ash, he turned in for the night. Emmeline Hawthorne wasn’t allowed into X’el’s office building, thanks to Matteo’s rules before he left the position. With that on his mind, Aiden slept soundly.
But Emmeline didn’t.
