Marry My Billionaire Second Husband - Chapter 243
Chapter 243: A Crack
Amelia had arrived at the office extra early in the morning.
Thank goodness for the local bakeries and their popularity among the white-collared workers, because she never thought a cake shop would be open so early. She wasn’t even the first customer there that morning when she arrived, and was but one of the many who left with an assortment of delicious pastries a few minutes later.
She had selected a nice cake, some tarts, and a couple of pastries she thought looked and smelled amazing. While lunch wouldn’t be too far away, she hoped that Aiden would appreciate the sweets to go with his morning coffee, especially considering how he was not a morning person at all.
Whistling a merry tune, she arrived at the office soon after.
“Have a coffee and wait for me here later during lunchtime, Sean,” Amelia said to the bodyguard Matteo had hired for her. The striking man frowned as he looked down at her.
“But―”
“The office is safe,” Amelia said. “Aiden’s there too. If anything, I am more worried about someone unwanted showing up.”
Eventually, the muscular man nodded.
After saying goodbye to Sean, Amelia slipped into the upstairs pantry to store the cakes in the fridge so the cream wouldn’t melt.
On her way, she noticed a couple of office workers staring at her. Then, when she caught them looking, they quickly turned away.
Amelia’s eyelid twitched in irritation. This was common― all too common. However, it had stopped for a good period of time, especially after Aiden took over the office and Matteo was no longer around to remind the staff of the gossip that surrounded him.
She didn’t miss this one bit, and eventually, Amelia couldn’t handle it any longer.
With the rest of the bread and pastries still in their paper bag, Amelia stalked over and grabbed the first staff she saw who was whispering and muttering while keeping their eye on her.
“Is there something you would like to say, Sabrina?” Amelia sweetly asked, though the look in her eyes was anything but sweet, if not murderous.
The woman jumped.
“Miss Kentwood!” she exclaimed. She cast a look at her friend, who whispered a quick ‘sorry’ and slinked away. That left her alone with Amelia.
“Well?” Amelia asked.
Sabrina gulped. “It’s nothing about you,” she said. “I just… We mistook you for someone else.”
“Someone else?” Amelia echoed. That was a first in this office. “Who?”
“Well…” Sabrina hemmed and hawed but nothing of substance left her lips.
After a full minute of stuttering and going back and forth, she eventually sighed and slumped her head. When she raised them again, there was a look of defeat in her eyes.
“Actually, we mistook someone else for you,” she confessed.
This time, Amelia’s eyes widened as she dropped her grip on Sabrina. She had a bad feeling about this, and she gripped her bag of pastries a little tighter.
“Miss Haw―” Sabrina caught herself, her nose wrinkling before she corrected her words, “Emmeline came to the office earlier in the morning,” Sabrina said. “I wasn’t looking carefully and I thought she was you, so I held the gate open for her. I only just realized that… well… she’s not you.”
“Emmeline?” Amelia said with surprise. Matteo had barred her from coming to the office, and Amelia naturally assumed that Aiden had too― or at least, nothing changed in this aspect even after Aiden took over the position of CEO.
“She was stuck at the front lobby and I thought you forgot to bring your access card,” Sabrina tried to explain. “I’ll get security! This was a huge mistake. Mr. Montgomery would be so mad if he realized she’s here―”
“It’s fine,” Amelia said before glancing at the wall clock hanging a short distance away. “I’m sure he’s already at the office now. I’ll have a word with him. Just get the security team over.”
Sabrina nodded and all but sprinted away and out of Amelia’s view after that was said. Amelia, on the other hand, took a deep breath and quickly made her way to her desk. She placed the bag of baked goods on her table before picking up a stack of files, edging closer to the door.
True enough, through the frosted glass, she could see Aiden’s figure already standing in the office. There seemed to be someone else standing with him― a woman. That was no doubt Emmeline.
Amelia’s knuckles were poised over the door, ready to knock, when it suddenly moved just a slight inch. It wasn’t locked properly, and their voices streamed out of the office much clearer with this crack.

“What will your sweet Amelia think when she finds out that you’ve betrayed her?” came Emmeline’s distinct voice.
She heard her name, and instantly, Amelia held her breath.
“That you knew who the father of my child actually is this entire time, and have worked against her to hide his identity?”
This time, Amelia’s blood chilled. Her ears began to ring as she gripped the files tighter, her lips parting as she raised one hand to cover her mouth. She gaped in shock, stumbling back in surprise.
What was this? What on earth was happening?
“Shut the fuck up―” Aiden growled out, but he was quickly cut off by Emmeline.
“I wonder how she’ll react when she finds out all of this is just your idea,” Emmeline continued. Amelia could almost hear the grin in her voice. “All because you want what your brother has― her. You see her as some prize to be won, and you want her all for yourself. But you can’t have that when your brother is in the way.”
Amelia felt her world turn dark for a split second, and her fingers began to tremble. Her grip on the files, no matter how much she tightened them, seemed to grow weaker and weaker. They slipped from her hands, aided by the layer of cold sweat that had formed on her clammy palms.
“So who do you come to? Me! So that we each can get who we want!”
She dropped to the floor with her files, the documents scattering everywhere as everyone in the office stopped what they were doing to look over. Amelia was on her knees, almost shivering where she sat, both of her hands covering her lips as she suppressed the urge to puke over the scattered papers.
Her body felt weak and she could barely breathe.
Aiden… What had he done?
