Chapter 248: Blood Type O
Amelia’s eyes widened a little in surprise at the question.
“Yes…” she said, dragging out the word in confusion. “Why?”
Matteo instantly stood up and went towards the surgeon. Amelia thought he was about to ask about getting a vial of Emmeline’s blood for testing, but what he asked was completely different.
“Excuse me, but there’s no way that a child with Blood Type O could possibly be born to parents with Blood types A and AB, is it?”
Amelia’s eyes widened at Matteo’s words. Didn’t this mean that… this couldn’t be! This was so outrageous the very thought threatened to send her mind into a tailspin.
If Emmeline wasn’t Benjamin and Annalise’s daughter, then whose daughter was she? Did they pick her up from the garbage dump?
She glanced at Matteo, whose face was the very picture of glacial calm. She could only envy his composure― Amelia wanted to scream in shock. But then again, maybe there was some medical explanation for this. Amelia vaguely recalled in her high school biology class that some genes were recessive. Perhaps this was the same for blood types.
The surgeon stared at Matteo silently for a brief moment, as he held her gaze.
Finally, she gave a quick, jerky nod. “You’re right.”
Amelia sucked in a deep breath. Holy shit.
“Wait, how does that work?” she asked, and the surgeon began to explain as she kept one eye out for the other two women.
“Type O blood is a recessive condition; one has to have inherited a recessive allele from each parent to have it. If a child is born to parents with Type A and Type B blood, there is a chance for a Type O child due to the presence of two copies of recessive alleles in the genome.”
Suddenly, Amelia remembered the Punnett square figure she used to draw for biology class. Meanwhile, a glint appeared in Matteo’s eyes as he began to speak.
“I get it, Doctor. It is impossible for an O blood child to be born to Type AB and A parents. Even if there is a copy of the recessive gene in the Type A parent, Type AB blood types will have two copies of dominant alleles, Type A and B.”
Matteo didn’t say it exactly, but his meaning was clear― Annalise couldn’t be Emmeline’s biological mother.
“That’s right. You know your blood types,” the surgeon said, vaguely impressed. “However, I would hope that you keep this knowledge to yourself, at least until the patient’s condition has stabilized further. The shock might be too much for your friend to take, at this point in time.”
Friend? Amelia had to marvel at the surgeon. She must be chronically offline to not know about the complicated web of relationships that tangled the three of them. But it was refreshing to find someone who didn’t know and couldn’t care less about it.
“Of course, I understand,” Matteo said, with a nod. “But may I trouble you for a favor?”
“What is it?”
“I need a vial of her blood to use for paternity testing. It’s urgent.”
The surgeon stared blankly at him. “You want to ask for blood after you heard me tell you she needs a transfusion and we’re lacking blood for her?”
Amelia elbowed Matteo discreetly. When the surgeon put it like that, it did make them seem like a couple of thugs.
“It doesn’t have to be right now, but I hope you’ll aid us in the future,” Amelia added, gesturing to Matteo. “Currently, we suspect his brother to be the father of the child, but he refuses to take responsibility without proof.”
“I see…” The surgeon furrowed her brow. “I’ll see what I can do, but no promises.”
“Thank you,” Amelia said, relieved.
Another colleague came out to talk to her, and both of them went away.
Matteo held out his hand. “I think it’s high time we made a move.”
“To go home? Or against Emmeline?” Amelia asked with a raised eyebrow.
“Both,” he smirked. “With her condition, Emmeline is not going anywhere. I’ll pay her a visit tomorrow and get the test done discreetly. Soon, we will be free of this mess.”
“Hopefully, we’re not jumping into another bigger fire,” Amelia said as they walked sedately out of the corridor, Sean flanking her protectively. “I can’t believe there’s a chance Emmeline is adopted. How is this possible? Do you know anything about it?”

“I’m just as surprised as you are,” Matteo shrugged, “But I am awfully interested to know how on earth could someone as prideful as Annalise be convinced to raise another woman’s child. It’s simply unthinkable.”
Amelia hummed in agreement. “Maybe Benjamin Hawthorne had a mistress somewhere, and he brought the child back? Maybe Grandpa would know something about it―”
Then she paused, remembering Horace Hawthorne’s delicate condition. Things wouldn’t be terrible if he knew about it, but what if he didn’t?
She imagined her grandfather’s heart giving out the moment she told him that Emmeline wasn’t Annalise’s daughter, that she could have been adopted from anywhere, or that she was a mistress’s child.
“On second thought, let’s not tell him anything,” Amelia decided firmly. “I don’t think he can take the stress.”
“Agreed,” Matteo said, squeezing her hand as he shot her a reassuring smile. “We can investigate matters on our own. For now, let’s go home.”

When they were sequestered back in their apartment, they called Ronan over and helpfully caught him up on what transpired in the past few hours.
“What the fuck did I just hear?” Ronan exclaimed, a look of blatant shock on his face. He helped himself to a bottle of Matteo’s prized wine, and Matteo and Amelia didn’t even bother to stop him.
It wasn’t as though she could drink, so the alcohol might as well go to someone who could appreciate it better. But if she could, Amelia would’ve. She badly needed it right now after everything that had transpired.
“So, not only did Emmeline come close to miscarrying, it turns out that Aiden is the father of Emmeline’s child, and now you’re telling me Emmeline is a bastard child that could be picked up from a lettuce patch? Matteo, are you on drugs?”
