Chapter 252: Handing It In
“Aiden’s here. He says he’s got the goods,” Matteo said with a surprised tone as his phone beeped with a new message.
He sighed regretfully― he was happily cuddling Amelia on the couch, but his half-brother’s sense of timing was still as terrible as ever.
Amelia raised her eyebrow.
“So quickly? I thought I would hear about a madman breaking into the hospital on the news,” Amelia confessed frankly.
Ronan and Matteo had informed Amelia about the little deal they made with Aiden a few days ago.
At that time, Amelia had to take a moment to laugh at the incredulity of it all. She could imagine Aiden sneaking into the hospital, dressed entirely in black with a face mask on as he wielded a syringe and stabbed it into Emmeline’s veins, waking her from her slumber.
“He has a lot of incentive to do what we say,” Matteo said with a brief smile as he pressed a kiss onto Amelia’s lips. “He can’t bear to live with your anger and indifference. This is the bare minimum he should do to make up for all the hurt he caused.”
Amelia sighed. She had to grapple with her changing feelings for Aiden in the past few days. One moment she was furious with him, and the next she was disappointed. Then she was upset at his decisions, then she missed him and his cheerful humor. It was a mess that she would attribute to pregnancy hormones. Thankfully, Matteo had been nothing but understanding.
“You’re right. But I do hope he turns over a new leaf.”
“We shall see if he lives up to your hopes,” Matteo said seriously. “Don’t waste your time on lost causes, Amelia. I’ll be back soon. Sean, keep a watch on the door.”
Sean nodded.
In the past few days, he had been staying in a spare room that had been hastily refurbished for his arrival. Matteo didn’t want to take any chances with Amelia’s safety. Amelia personally found it weird that a stranger was staying with her, but Sean was very professional and told the both of them to treat him like furniture.
That made her uncomfortable in a different way. Sean was a living breathing being! How could she ignore his existence?
“Are you sure you don’t need the added security?” Amelia asked worriedly.
“I’ll be fine,” Matteo said. “He’s meeting me downstairs.”
Without further ado, Matteo made his way down and saw his brother waiting by his motorcycle, his tall human silhouette a sharp contrast to all the cars surrounding them. He was tapping his foot irritably against the floor.
Matteo had to snort. If anyone was looking in, they’d think the brothers were involved in a shady drug deal. Then again, it was definitely shady.
Aiden had worked faster than they expected, but who knew where the blood actually came from? Matteo hoped he wasn’t involved in illegal blood transfusions.
“Took you long enough,” Aiden grumbled when he caught sight of Matteo. “Are you here alone? Where is Amelia? You promised you would let me see her!”
“I promised to tell her about your actions. Whether you’ve held up your end of the bargain is still yet to be determined,” Matteo corrected his assumptions without mercy. He held out his hand. “The blood sample, if you don’t mind.”
Aiden hesitated, and then he reached into his pockets to lift out a vial of blood. “Here it is. I got the equipment from Isaac, so it’s all legit.”
Matteo hummed in approval. Truthfully, he didn’t think Aiden had the foresight. He half-expected to get a blood sample stored in a Tupperware.
Of course, whether the blood belonged to Emmeline was a whole different story.
“Where did you get this from?” Matteo asked as he squinted suspiciously at Aiden. “You didn’t try to extract the blood from the office chair, did you?”
Aiden stared at Matteo, horrified and disgusted.
“Ewww, what on earth? Of course I got it from her― her toe. Okay, I got it from her toe. I’m desperate, but I have standards. Why would I even get her dried blood from the chair? It had already been washed the moment she was sent to the hospital!”
“Well sorry for thinking the worst of you,” Matteo said dryly. “You have given me no reason to think otherwise.”
Aiden’s expression shuttered briefly. “Fair enough. But you’d better hold up to your end of the bargain! Take this sample and get it tested tomorrow!”

Perhaps the deities above were finally deciding to give them a break. After Matteo had gotten his hands on that vial of blood. He had received a call from the surgeon at the hospital, which saved him the trouble of finding a way to contact her.
After all, that surgeon had not given them her number, or even her name. It turned out that her name was Michelle, and she wanted to see the both of them in her office the next morning, before her night shift ended. She wanted to speak to them regarding the blood test.
So Amelia and Matteo sat in front of a doctor with impressive dark eye circles as she stared at them impassively.
“How are things? Did you get the blood?” Matteo asked, without any preamble.
Amelia gently kicked the heel of her future husband under the table as she cleared her throat. She didn’t have much — technically any — love for Emmeline, but surely Matteo could have spared five seconds to ask about her well-being.
The last thing they needed was for the doctor to believe that they did not have her best interests at heart, even if it was true.
“How is Emmeline doing?” Amelia added quickly. “Is she feeling better now?”
The doctor frowned minutely at Matteo’s behavior before she responded to Amelia. “Miss Emmeline’s condition has improved after a few night’s rest, as well as the anti-anxiety medication and progesterone pills we have provided her.”
She continued, eyeing Matteo cautiously, “She’s currently on an IV drip to replenish her nutrients and is still undergoing observation, as she has reported dizziness and nausea the moment she gets out of bed.”
