Chapter 253: Additional Requests
“Oh,” Amelia said. The situation sounded more serious than she expected. “Then when will she be discharged?”
“It’s hard to say,” Michelle said. “We cannot guarantee that the bleeding won’t start the moment she’s off medication. Currently, we’d advise her to be on strict bed rest. I do not know what relationship the three of you have, and frankly, I couldn’t care less, but I would hope you avoid stressing her unnecessarily in this critical time.”
She shot them a judgemental look, and Amelia fought to keep her expression calm and even. Perhaps this doctor had done some digging on the drama that surrounded them, or most likely another colleague had told her the gossip.
“I see, thank you for all your hard work,” Matteo said sincerely, and he found that he meant it. Emmeline being on strict bed rest was the best piece of news he had in a long while. Confined to a bed, there was no way she could wreak havoc.
And they weren’t going to stress her. Matteo only needed evidence of her wrongdoing. Since Emmeline would never feel guilt or shame at her actions, she would be perfectly fine.
“Since you’ve mentioned the medications, I have to ask― will they affect the results of the test? Does it mean you’ll have to reschedule things?”
“No, the medication does not affect test results,” Michelle said. “I have extracted three vials of blood for testing― not just for paternity with the fetus, but for her general health. But this is the most I can give you, due to the patient’s condition.”
She added, “I’ve called you here because I need the DNA sample from you. Would you prefer to swab your cheek, or offer blood?”
Matteo immediately held out his arm, nearly vibrating with enthusiasm. “I’ll do both.”
Next to him, Amelia wasn’t much better. Her heart was beating as quickly as a galloping horse. Her mouth ran dry. Soon, this nightmare would be over.
The surgeon raised an eyebrow at the fervent enthusiasm but proceeded to collect his DNA samples with practiced calm.
“You’ll get your results in a day or two,” Michelle said when it was all over. “I’ll send this over to the lab now. Do you have any questions?”
“Yes. Do you know if anyone has visited Emmeline in the past few days?” Matteo asked. “He would be around my height, and he looks a lot like me.”
Michelle’s eyebrow twitched at the ridiculous question. Rich people really had their heads in the clouds. Did this couple think she had nothing to do but hover over Emmeline Hawthorne day and night? They might as well ask how many times Emmeline went to poop― as a doctor, she would actually have to pay attention to such information!
Of course, she wasn’t going to say that. Michelle liked being employed.
“I do not know. I am a doctor, not a security guard. If you wish to know Miss Hawthorne’s visitors, you might want to take a look at the receptionist counter instead. If there’s anything else, I’m leaving.”
“Wait!” Matteo called out, and he reached inside his pocket to hold out two vials of blood. “Can you test these blood samples too?”
The doctor stared back at him unblinkingly, before she asked with great suspicion. “Where… did you get this sample from? I’ll let you know that nonconsensual blood drawing is highly illegal.”
“It’s all consensual,” Matteo said as he lied without blinking.
Amelia pressed her lips so she wouldn’t snort out loud.
“Apparently, this is another woman who claimed that I’m the father of her unborn child. I would also like to take the time to clarify this,” he said. “There’s another man who claims the child Emmeline is carrying is his as well and would like peace of mind. I’ve labeled them accordingly.”
“Fine,” Michelle said, inwardly regretting the day she stopped to talk to this couple.
She took the vial and slapped a label on it, naming it Jane Doe. Was this man some manwhore that women everywhere were claiming his babies?
The other vial was labeled with the name ‘John Smith’. Michelle raised an eyebrow at the common names but said nothing.
“If that’s indeed all, I’ll deliver the samples.”
“Thank you for all of your hard work,” Amelia said, reaching out to clasped the poor doctor’s hands.

Amelia expected life to go on peacefully, now that Emmeline was effectively on strict bed rest. But whatever deities above that had scheduled that tiny break for her decided that enough was enough, and it was time for Amelia to suffer again.
This time, it was because Lady Vanity had reported the news of Emmeline’s hospitalization, along with Matteo and Amelia’s presence at the hospital. With such a shocking turn of events, everyone began to jump to all sorts of conclusions― and her fellow colleagues were not exempt.
Plenty of them had seen the fight between Amelia and Emmeline, and those who were close enough to hear their words gladly repeated them for the consumption of all the gossipers.

There was a chance Aiden was Emmeline’s baby-daddy! Who would have thought!
Swarms of reporters lingered by the entrance, wanting to approach Emmeline to get their hands on this scoop. Benji Wales had to get security to escort them from the premises, but they hovered at the doors like circling vultures, desperate for a scoop, irritating patients and staff alike.
X’el was not exempt, but then Amelia had quit, so she didn’t need to give a shit anymore. She could just hold up at home and wait for the media furor to subside.
However, that was not Emmeline’s way. Her cousin, even after bleeding out a mere week ago, was ready to fan the flames. She posted a video of herself on social media, and in it, she was leaning against her inclined backrest, still on the bed, her face the very picture of fragility and girlish sweetness.
Amelia had to marvel at her cousin’s attitude― if she had put her zeal towards chasing Matteo for something more worthwhile like a doctor’s career, she would be the head of the hospital by now.
“Hi everyone,” Emmeline smiled and tucked her hair behind her ear, “I’m currently on strict bedrest, so forgive me for not being able to see all of you in person.”
She sniffled as if she was a celebrity being forced to part from her loving fans.
“I’ve heard all about the rumors surrounding my hospitalization, and I’m here to let you know that both I and my unborn child are doing a lot better under the care of such professional doctors,” Emmeline said proudly, gesturing to her tiny baby bump.
“We had a tiny scare, didn’t we, baby?” She spoke to her belly, before turning to smile at the camera. “But we got through it. No matter what forces try to separate us, my child and I will remain firm, in the hopes that we will have a chance to reunite with the man of our household, Matteo Montgomery.”
