Chapter 255: Blood Test Results
Amelia sucked in a breath of cold air. She had tried her best to keep her voice down and leave the room, yet Horace had still heard her. With how things were, there was no choice but to fess up. Matteo and Ronan were going to be back any minute anyway.
She smiled and discreetly cut the call, praying that Matteo would understand. Saying a proper goodbye was the least of her worries right now.
“You don’t have to hide anything just because of my health, my dear,” Horace said understandingly. “If Emmeline has done something and you need my help against her, I can help you.”
Amelia shook her head. “She’s still your granddaughter,” she said. “I don’t want you to have to make that choice between us, Grandpa. I know you’re looking out for me, but I can handle her.”
“So she has done something,” Horace pointed out, and Amelia could only smile sheepishly. “What is it this time?”
“How much of the news have you seen?” Amelia asked, leading her grandfather back to the living room where the couches were. She didn’t want him to stand for too long.
“Well, Annalise made sure I read all the articles about her daughter in hopes I would change my mind,” Horace said with a roll of his eyes.
“Did you see the part where some people mentioned the child she’s carrying isn’t actually Matteo’s?” Amelia softly asked.
Horace raised an eyebrow and Amelia immediately continued.
“I know, I know. And after she made such a huge fuss about it too at the wedding!” Amelia said, shaking her head. “But I overheard Aiden and Emmeline’s conversation― there’s a good chance that the baby’s father is actually Aiden.”
Amelia then went on to explain how she had overheard the entire conversation, briefly explaining how Emmeline ended up in the hospital in the first place, just in case Annalise tried to twist the facts and push all of the blame on Amelia. All throughout, Horace listened quietly and thoughtfully.
Up until Amelia had finished her explanations, Horace remained quiet.
There wasn’t a chance for him to speak either, as the elevator soon let out a soft ‘ding’. Out stepped Matteo and Ronan. Amelia’s eyes couldn’t help but narrow in on the brown A4-sized envelope that was tightly gripped in Matteo’s hands, the material even crinkling a little due to the amount of force he placed into that grip.
“Mr. Hawthorne,” Ronan greeted, immediately coming over. “What brings you to visit today?”
“Can’t an old man visit his granddaughter, Mr. Sullivan?” Horace replied in good humor. He then turned to Matteo. “Matteo,” he said.
“Grandfather,” Matteo greeted. He came over and casually placed his hand on Amelia’s shoulder, squeezing gently. “It’s good to see you well.”
Horace nodded once before his gaze lowered to the documents Matteo held. “Will this be the blood test report?”
“You… know?” Ronan asked, wincing a little. He then turned to Amelia and asked, “Was that why you cut the call so quickly?”
“My grandfather overheard a bit of our conversation,” Amelia explained. Her eyes flitted over to Matteo as she said, “I thought that… maybe we shouldn’t keep him in the dark after all. He has the right to know, especially after everything Emmeline did.”
“In that case, shall we?” Matteo asked.
He walked to the couches as well, placing the envelopes down on the coffee table. Only then did Amelia realize there were actually three different sets of documents, most likely one containing the results from the blood Doctor Michelle had drawn for them, and the other two were the test results that belonged to Ronan, split into two by Matteo for different reasons.
“Jane Doe?” Horace Hawthorne echoed, looking at Matteo with slight confusion in his eyes.
After Matteo explained the situation, he nodded with understanding.
“Moment of truth,” Ronan muttered under his breath as he reached for the first file.
He decided to start off with the file labeled ‘Jane Doe’― that was the blood Aiden had drawn for them, tested against Matteo’s, under the assumption that this really was Emmeline’s blood.
Carefully, he pulled the string and removed the stack of papers inside. Ronan was in charge of reading, while Matteo and Amelia’s hands were tightly cupped around each other’s.
Anxiety fluttered in Amelia’s chest as she waited for Ronan to speak.
“This is,” Ronan wiggled his index and middle finger to signal the quotation marks, “Emmeline’s blood, provided by Aiden, tested against Matteo’s regarding the parentage of the child. In this case, Matteo is…”
Amelia held her breath.
“…not the father.”

She let out a breath, her back losing a part of the tension. Amelia shared a glance with Matteo, only to find that he wore no relieved smile on his face like she did.
“We aren’t sure whether or not Aiden provided us with a real sample,” Matteo reminded. “Let’s move on to the next one.”
Ronan nodded and picked up the next envelope.
“This is the blood sample that Doctor Michelle drew for us,” Ronan said. He pulled the white sheets out.
Amelia felt her world spin. She bit down hard on her bottom lip, enough to taste the coppery, salty taste of blood hanging on her tongue as she waited for Ronan to speak.
Once again, his eyes quickly scanned through the documents before a bright smile lit up his face.
“Congratulations, Matteo!” Ronan said, slamming the papers down on the coffee table with delight. “You are not that wretched child’s― I mean…” He glanced at Horace and gulped. “You’re not the baby’s father!”
Only then did Matteo let out a breath of air he didn’t realize he was holding. He felt all the weight lift from his shoulders, and for a second, he shut his eyes and leaned his head on Amelia’s shoulder, breathing in her scent.
“Finally,” he murmured under his breath, and Amelia felt his breath tickle her skin. Likewise, she felt a bead of warm liquid touch her cheek.
“Emmeline…” Horace muttered under his breath and shook his head. “I don’t know what went wrong with her. To lie like that…”
“As long as we have this report, we can make things clear to the rest of the world,” Ronan said, his eyes practically glittering.
“Does this mean that Aiden didn’t try to trick us?” Amelia asked. A strange sense of relief washed over her, but before it could entirely overtake her with joy, Matteo straightened up and shook his head.
“There’s one more,” he reminded them, nodding at the final envelope left on the table, still sealed. “This is the sample that Aiden provided, tested against Emmeline’s. It will tell us whether or not the blood samples came from the same person, or if Aiden tried to pass a random person’s blood to us to use.”
Amelia swallowed the bile in her throat and adjusted herself. She watched with pinched lips as Ronan reached forward and pulled out the last stack of documents.
After a few seconds of reading, he said, “The results show a 97.4% match.”
Amelia couldn’t help the smile that broke on her face. “So does that mean that it’s real? That he really got Emmeline’s blood?”
Ronan, however, did not seem very enthusiastic.
“Ronan, what’s wrong?” Matteo asked, his eyebrows furrowed.
“Uh…” Ronan stuttered, “It’s just that… Well…”
He looked away from the papers.
“The report also mentions something else,” Ronan said with a gulp. “That it’s likely the relationship between these two subjects are… grandparent and grandchild.”
