Chapter 270: Under His Nose I
Aiden continued to watch, barely making a sound. He didn’t even dare to breathe loudly for fear of being discovered, but as he continued to watch, he realized he wasn’t breathing at all.
Why was Benjamin Hawthorne wrapping his arms around his mother? What the flying fuck? Aiden couldn’t believe his eyes, he quickly pinched himself on the arm, and a sharp sting of pain shot through his nerves.
This wasn’t a dream, or some fucked up hallucination brought about by lack of sleep or by the stress of the day’s events. Just as Aiden thought that would be the worst of it, whatever higher power in the heavens decided they weren’t done torturing him yet.
His mother pulled Benjamin Hawthorne closer into the Montgomery mansion, and they began to kiss ravenously like horny teenagers. Even from a distance, there was no mistaking the sounds of sloppy kissing that were threatening to overwhelm his ears.
Aiden’s eyes caught sight of the way Benjamin Hawthorne’s hands were roving all over his mother’s back, going down to cup her ass. His mother let out a low moan, and Aiden never wanted to be struck by lightning so badly before!
A meteorite could fall and end his life right now, and he’d be nothing but grateful. What crime did he commit to be punished this way? Never before had he wanted to die more than in this moment.
Aiden felt like he stepped into an alternate dimension. He wanted to scream, but that would definitely attract unwanted attention. Instead, he closed his eyes and prayed frantically that their clothes would remain on their bodies and his mother wouldn’t be doing anything more risque…
He didn’t want another sibling! Let alone one with such a huge age difference, and from Benjamin Hawthorne nonetheless!
Thankfully, the noises stopped. Aiden opened his eyes warily, only to see Benjamin Hawthorne whispering into his mother’s ear.
Urgh. Disgusting. He was probably telling her sweet nothings.
They continued to whisper in lowered voices, and Benjamin Hawthorne reached out to caress his mother’s hand. Aiden felt the urge to vomit grow stronger by the second.
He couldn’t see the entire expression on his mother’s face, but judging by how her shoulders relaxed, it must have been something good.
He noted with some irony that not even his father could manage it. His mother was often on eggshells in front of Charles Montgomery, trying to please him with her words and actions. Seeing her seem so free and unbothered in front of Benjamin Hawthorne sent a twist of heartache into Aiden’s psyche.
Meanwhile, Benjamin Hawthorne was clearly into his mother, if the faint soft smile on his face was any indication. Hell, now that Aiden thought about it, he had never seen Benjamin Hawthorne look so happy in the presence of another woman. He had thought for the longest time that Emmeline’s dad was a closeted gay! He had even argued with Emmeline about this before!
Turns out Emmeline was right. Her father wasn’t a closeted gay if that enthusiastic making out with Aiden’s mother was any indication.
Oh god. Aiden’s face paled.
This meant that his mother was effectively having an affair with Benjamin Hawthorne right under his father’s nose! Jesus fuck! How long has this been going on for? What did they even bond over? Wasn’t Annalise one of his mother’s best friends?
One part of him could only applaud his mother’s audacity. Catherine Laine certainly had some nerve! If his mother and Benjamin Hawthorne weren’t still married to their respective spouses, Aiden would fully support her new romance.
But they had people waiting for them.
Benjamin Hawthorne had even slapped Annalise’s cheek hours ago before coming over to canoodle with his mother. Aiden furrowed his brows in distaste; surely his mother would pick a better man to have an affair with, than with someone who could turn violent when he was upset!
They hugged again, and Benjamin Hawthorne even lifted his mother up slightly to lightly swing her around as if they were a newlywed couple. They continued to kiss.
Aiden stared at them with deadened eyes. This man was just putting on an act.
He wanted to storm right down to demand answers. He wanted to vanish into a pile of dirt. Aiden instead did none of that and proceeded to stay put, like a rat, in his own home.
Eventually, finally, Benjamin Hawthorne left. His mother stood at the door and watched him wistfully before closing the door.
Catherine Laine thought that that was the end of it, as she began to prepare for bed. She walked up the stairs, only to freeze when she met the eyes of her grown-up son.
“Aiden, what are you doing here?” Catherine hissed out, upset. A swell of panic grew within her. How much had he seen? Maybe he had simply popped up now because he wanted a midnight snack after he had showered.
However, a quick glance at Aiden showed that he was still wearing the same clothes he came back in. That, and the shell-shocked look in his eyes proved that he had seen everything.
“Mom, I live here,” Aiden pointed out in a similar hiss, “Did you forget about your adult son while you were out there having an affair with―”
Catherine immediately slapped her hand over her son’s mouth, her eyes darting all around the house. Thankfully, at such a late hour, there were no servants milling around, and her husband was still tucked into bed.
“Let’s talk in your room,” Catherine decided firmly. Aiden could only nod as they walked back into his room. Once he closed the door and windows, he whirled around.

“Mom, are you having an affair with Benjamin Hawthorne?” Aiden demanded hotly. “And don’t try to pretend otherwise, I saw the two of you necking like teenagers at the movie theater downstairs, and you’re too old to be in a friends-with-benefits relationship with a middle-aged man!”
“Aiden, calm down.” Catherine rolled her eyes at her son’s dramatic behavior.
Clearly, he inherited this from Charles. With her son’s moral compass, she knew it wasn’t the issue of ethics that bothered him.
“To put it nicely, yes, I am carrying on with Benjamin Hawthorne. No, your father and Annalise do not know about this, and I would like to keep this a secret for the time being. Any more questions?”
Aiden’s mouth opened and closed silently. He wasn’t expecting his mother to straight up admit it!
“Mom, you can’t be with him!” Aiden shook his head. “Did you know he hit Annalise Hawthorne just hours ago before he came to see you? He’s untrustworthy! He’ll hurt you when he gets angry!”
Catherine only shot him a pleased smile. “Oh Aiden, you don’t know him like I do. Trust me when I say no harm will befall me.”
What else could Aiden say to that?
