Chapter 271: Under His Nose II
“How could you say that?!” Aiden asked, astonished.
He paced back and forth in his room. For the first time in his life, this huge bedroom suddenly felt so constrictive and strangely tiny.
“Oh, quiet down, darling,” Catherine said with a huff. She went to her son’s bed and sat herself down, watching as Aiden walked around like an animal stuck in a tiny zoo enclosure. “I don’t want your father overhearing this.”
“You didn’t seem so worried when you were canoodling down in the living room just now!” Aiden whisper-yelled. He continued, “You definitely may know him better than I do, but that’s not saying a lot! How long have you even known him? How much have you even interacted with him before things turned this way?”
Catherine pursed her lips, one leg crossed over the other. She looked thoughtfully out of the window and allowed silence to fill the room. But for every second she didn’t answer, Aiden’s impatience grew. His eyelids twitched before he knelt down next to his mother, holding her hand.
“Are you not afraid of Dad finding out?” Aiden pressed in his mother’s silence. “Or what if things go out of hand? It may be kissing and hugging now, but what if you end up pregnant? I don’t want a sibling that’s in any bit related to Emmeline Hawthorne!”
Catherine’s eyes suddenly darted over to Aiden, causing his blood to chill to realization.
“Mom,” he said, “please don’t tell me…”
Catherine suddenly stood up. In his surprise and due to her sudden action, Aiden’s hands dropped back down to his side. She straightened her clothes and made her way to the door, stepping out.
“You will not speak of this to anyone else,” Catherine said. “Understood?”
“Mom, come on, you’ve got to be joking―”
“Understood?” Catherine repeated, cutting into Aiden’s sentence.
She stared hard into Aiden’s eyes as the latter fell into silence, biting down hard on his bottom lip. Eventually, he exhaled.
“Fine,” he said.
“Good,” Catherine replied. Her expression softened once more and she stepped out of the room. She said, “Now get some sleep and stop thinking about these useless things. You’ve seen nothing tonight.”
With that said, she closed the door behind her. Aiden could hear her heels clicking as she walked down the corridor and away from his room, presumably back to hers.
How great it was that she could sleep peacefully after getting kissed goodnight. Aiden, on the other hand, wanted to tear his hair out. He stared at his phone, subconsciously scrolling to Amelia’s contact details. His thumb hovered over the call button, wanting nothing more than to press down.
However, he didn’t.
“Fuck.”
Cursing under his breath, he tossed his phone on the bed and rummaged through his wardrobe for a fresh set of clothes. He needed to wash these thoughts out of his mind and get his head straight.
Especially when his mother had indirectly confirmed that he might have other half-siblings running around without his knowledge.

Amelia could feel Matteo’s heartbeat thudding beneath the palm of her hand. She gently traced circles on his bare chest, enjoying the feeling of his skin underneath her fingertips. However, before she could continue for long, his hand quickly grabbed hers, squeezing gently and prompting her to look up at him.
“If you continue doing this, I might be inclined to think that you’re suggesting a fourth round,” Matteo teased, his voice low and ridden with lust.
In reply to that, Amelia merely giggled and pressed a kiss along his jawline before she snuggled further into his embrace.
“You sure have a lot of energy pent up,” she said jokingly.
Looking out of the window, she could already see the first hints of dawn spreading across the sky. Bits of pink and purple were slowly starting to melt with the navy of the night.
“We’ve already stayed up all night. Don’t you need to rest? I heard from Ronan that you two have some important business to attend to tomorrow.”
“I’ve already recharged,” Matteo said. “Spending time with you is all the rest I need.”
“Smoothtalker,” Amelia said with a laugh. “Ronan will have your head tomorrow when you show up with panda eyes.”

“He might have the same himself,” Matteo said with a snort. “He’s looking into the history of Catherine Laine and Benjamin Hawthorne. With the newfound information in your mother’s diary, we might already have a potential suspect for Emmeline’s birth mother.”
“So it might really be Catherine?” Amelia asked.
She used her elbow to prop herself up, causing the blanket that was draped over her body to fall down a little, revealing her breasts. Matteo’s eyes shifted downward instinctively, and when she caught his gaze, Amelia flicked his forehead.
“Now now,” she said. “Be serious.”
“I am serious,” Matteo said. With one arm, he pulled Amelia close, pressing a kiss on her lips. She sighed into the kiss, closing her eyes before they slowly fluttered open again when they parted. “Seriously in love with you.”
Amelia gazed into his eyes, streaks of honey seemingly holding their gaze together. She leaned in and pressed a kiss to his lips as well before pulling back. However, she didn’t manage to go far; Matteo’s hand cupped the back of Amelia’s head, leading her lips back to his before he hungrily deepened the kiss.
She moved along with him, her breaths growing heavy as she clung onto him, her core starting to churn with renewed desire.
When a sharp ring of Matteo’s phone notification sounded, she gasped.
“Your phone―”
“Ignore it,” Matteo said, his fingers kneading her waist. “It’s probably Ronan. Nothing that can’t wait till morning.”
Then, another notification came in. And another. And yet another.
They pulled apart from each other and Matteo exhaled heavily, leaning his forehead against Amelia’s. She chuckled gently before pressing a kiss on the tip of Matteo’s nose. Then, she reached for his phone on the bedside table.
When her finger touched the screen, it lit up, showing all the notifications that came in. Amelia’s eyes landed on the top message, but the name was not who she was expecting.
“What did Ronan want?” Matteo asked, wrapping his arms around Amelia’s waist as he leaned his chin on her shoulder.
“It’s not Ronan,” Amelia answered, showing Matteo his phone. “It’s Aiden.”
