Marry My Billionaire Second Husband - Chapter 278
Chapter 278: Cat Fight
Aiden could only internally applaud his mother’s acting skills. If it weren’t for the fact that he had witnessed her making out with Annalise’s husband, he would’ve honestly been fooled by her act as well. To the outside world, Catherine Laine had acted as the perfect wife and best friend― knowing the truth just made Aiden shiver.
“That is still possible!” Annalise said, finally willing to meet Catherine in the eye. She gritted her teeth and huffed, casting a pointed look at Matteo and Amelia. “Your stepson is still a single man― he hasn’t married Amelia Kentwood yet and can still marry my daughter.”
Instantly, Amelia’s eyelids twitched in irritation. However, there was no need to step in. Surprisingly, Catherine spoke up before either she or Matteo could.
“That’s not going to work,” Catherine said with a wince. “Unfortunately, Matteo gave up his claim to the Montgomery family fortune.” She then cast Matteo a glance, smiling as fake as a doll. “Isn’t that right, Matteo?”
Aiden let out a low whistle while Matteo’s gaze turned steely.
Using this opportunity to steer Annalise off this idea all while making sure Matteo wouldn’t be able to come back and fight Aiden for the Montgomery wealth? Catherine was killing two birds with one stone.
“Of course,” Matteo said. He reached for Amelia’s waist, gently holding her close. “Even if there’s no ceremony yet, Amelia is my wife. If not her, I will be happy to stay single for the rest of my life.”
“You―”
“Isn’t that sweet?” Catherine cooed, placing a hand on her chest as she continued to smile at the couple.
Her gaze was so intense that Amelia felt her hair stand all over her skin― Catherine’s grin reminded Amelia of the evil witch right before she gave Snow White the poisoned apple.
“I was once so insistent on their marriage,” Catherine continued before slowly whirling to look at Annalise once more. Only then did Amelia let out the breath she hadn’t even realized she was holding. “But I’ve come to realize it’s much better to let the youth look for their own love and life companion without us coming in between.”
“That’s―” Annalise said, stumped so silly that the words clogged right in her throat, refusing to come out. “You… That… You’re only saying that because Emmeline has temporarily lost the favor of Horace, aren’t you?”
When Catherine said nothing, Annalise coldly scoffed. She placed her hands on her hips in disbelief, pacing back and forth as anger began to bubble and brew in her chest.
“All this time, I thought of you as my best friend. Yet all you’ve ever thought about is what sort of rewards their marriage could bring you!” Annalise yelled, pointing an accusing finger right at Catherine’s nose. “And now that Emmeline is no longer useful, you’re casting her aside!”
“Now now, Annalise,” Catherine said, remaining ever so calm. Her voice held no sign of frenzy, unlike Annalise’s quickly rising pitch and tone. “Let’s think rationally. Emmeline herself said before that she finds Aiden an unsuitable partner, and marrying Matteo will not bring her any benefit since he’s stepped away from the family. There are so many better options for her―”
“She’s ruined!” Annalise cried out, exasperated. “How do you expect her to find another respectable young man to marry after everything that has happened? After all the rumors your lovely new daughter-in-law―” She shot Amelia a dirty glare, “―spread about her? And after your own son put a baby in her only to coerce her into aborting the child!”
“Oh, nonsense,” Catherine said, rolling her eyes as she batted Annalise’s woes away as though it was nothing more than mere gossip overheard in the wet markets. “That’s nonsense. It’s a progressive society and Emmeline is a better catch than most women out there.”
“She’s your goddaughter!” Annalise weeped. “Do you have no heart?!”
“It’s exactly because she is my goddaughter that I want the best for her!” Catherine said in reply.
She glided over like a swan over the mirror lake, scooping Annalise into her arms as she carefully led the latter away from the doors of the operating theater.
“Let’s take a moment to calm down and relax, my dear friend. Emmeline is a strong girl― she will be alright! And once she puts this behind her, she can start a fresh new life with plentiful opportunities! I’ll help to look around and ask if any good, respectable families have sons that are looking for a partner―”
“Nonsense!” Annalise suddenly screamed as she fought her way out of Catherine’s arms. As though she had been snapped out of her trance, she staggered back and glared at Catherine with red eyes, panting heavily. “You want to make sure Aiden won’t be implicated in the future! You’re heartless!”
Without warning, Annalise suddenly reached forward and shoved Catherine square on the chest. Caught off guard, Catherine stumbled back, rocking on her heels. She was thankfully caught by Aiden, who swooped in and supported his mother before she could fall.
“Hey, watch it!” he yelled. “There’s no need to shove!”
“That’s the least I could do after you offered to shove my daughter out the window earlier!” Annalise screamed back. “She is carrying your child and you’re trying to murder her!”
“Murder?!” Aiden echoed, scandalized. “I was carrying out your daughter’s dying wish!”
“She isn’t dying, you bastard!” Annalise screamed. She charged forward and pushed Catherine to one side, clawing at Aiden’s hair. “Don’t you dare curse her! Even if she dies, I will make sure you’re married to her ghost so that you can never harm another innocent girl again with your philandering ways!”
For all his prowess and might fighting trained combatants, Aiden was a mess of arms and legs when it came to housewives who only knew how to scratch and pull. He yelped and yowched, shielding his face with his arms as Annalise’s extensions clawed into his skin, tearing the surface to draw blood.
“Get your hands off my son!” Catherine yelled, joining the fray as well, attempting to pull Annalise off Aiden.
However, hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, and Annalise was the devil on an unstoppable warpath. There was no force that could stop her now that she had tasted blood― she was determined to rip into Aiden’s skin and claw out his heart as a tribute for her beloved daughter.
