Chapter 283: Karma Comes Knocking
“Oh this will be interesting,” Amelia said good-naturedly as she watched the nurses wheel Emmeline back into her ward.
Aiden stared after them, horrified. He felt all his hair stand on his body the moment Emmeline cast his eyes upon him. In fact, for someone who took so much pride in his handsome features, he had never wanted more than to go under the knife and take on a new face.
“She seems so much nicer without her rationality, as odd as that seems,” Amelia continued. She then turned and looked at Matteo. “How long do you think this state will last?
“Not long enough, unfortunately,” Matteo said with a doting smile. He then looked at Aiden, his expression turned teasing. He grinned almost a little too cheekily before he said, “Have fun. You will need to look after her.”
“Why should I?!” Aiden asked with a huff. “I could just go home right now!”
“And face the wrath of our sperm donor?” Matteo shot back, watching as Aiden’s face paled. “Yeah, I didn’t think so.”
“He wouldn’t hear the news so quickly…” Aiden trailed off, looking left and right. But even he knew that was a stretch.
There were too many people in the hospital, and even if Elysium Heights Hospital wasn’t a medical center where anyone and everyone could enter, no one would keep their lips shut. There were too many people roaming these halls who knew the Montgomerys and the Hawthornes, some even personally. It was only a matter of time.
“I actually think I should head home right now,” Aiden said. “I think I’ll have just enough time to grab my shit and run to the next town. Do you think that Walton bastard will have a spare room― ow!”
That last comment earned him a slap over the head from Matteo and a nasty glare from Amelia.
“Watch it,” Matteo said. “Just because we pity you doesn’t mean you’re entirely forgiven to make jokes like that.”
Amelia placed a hand on Matteo’s chest, immediately drawing his eyes to look down at her dotingly. After that, Matteo kept his lips shut, allowing Amelia to speak.
“Good luck with Emmeline,” she sincerely said. “If you need somewhere to hide from your dad, I’m sure Isaac still has a spare room he could offer as a temporary bomb shelter.”
“Great,” Aiden said, blowing air at his fringe.
He watched as the happy couple left, hand in hand, a bounce in their steps that looked a little too oddly happy.
As wonderful as it was for them, it was utter dog shit for Aiden. He could only retreat back into Emmeline’s room. She was still awake, unfortunately. Her eyes were half-hooded, threatening to fall close every few seconds. Unfortunately, she won every battle against the anesthetic, staying awake as she stared out the window.
When she heard the door open and close, Emmeline’s head slowly whirled around to look at who it was that had entered. A huge smile broke across her face when she noticed it was Aiden, causing shivers to run down the latter’s spine.
“Hey cutie,” she said a little too enthusiastically, drawing out her words as though she was inebriated.
“Please do not call me that,” Aiden said, dropping into the armchair as he rubbed his temples in frustration.
God. How was he supposed to tell Emmeline everything that had happened in the short span of time she was under the knife? Her whole life would be turned upside down! Not that his would be any better.
Aiden looked at his phone, his fingers hovering over the switch to toggle the device to airplane mode. In the end, he bit his lip and flicked the switch. If anyone deserved hell for their actions, it was his mother’s turn. Aiden had already paid his debt― this wasn’t his burden to bear.
He cast one last look at the awfully giggly Emmeline in bed. Then, he let out a long sigh. Time to call Isaac to check if he could still crash at his place.

“Where is she?” The voice of an angered man could be heard tearing down the walls of the hospital cafeteria.
A few people looked up from their meals to the entrance, searching for the speaker. Their eyes widened when they caught sight of Charles Montgomery storming through the halls like a bull on a rampage, smoke practically puffing right out of his nostrils.
“Where the fuck is she?!” he yelled, the blood vessels on his neck practically popping out the more he stressed himself. Charles’s head veered left and right as he searched for the familiar figure, only to freeze when his gaze landed on the familiar figure of his wife and Benjamin Hawthorne.
The adulterous couple were side by side, Benjamin holding a fork in hand as he gently fed Catherine a mouthful of seared salmon.
Even though practically the entire cafeteria had their eyes on Charles Montgomery, those two seemed like they were in their own world. Neither Catherine nor Benjamin had a care in the world for the furious man, giggling and whispering to each other like a pair of teenagers in love.
“Motherfucker!” Charles fumed as he stormed over. In a matter of seconds, he had crossed the cafeteria, pushing everyone and anyone who wasn’t quick enough to dodge out of the way as he made a beeline for the couple.
Without waiting for Catherine or Benjamin to react, Charles reached forward and pulled Catherine out of her seat by her hair. She screamed in a mix of surprise and pain, her hands reaching for her scalp as her husband manhandled her, throwing her to the floor.

She landed in a heap, similar to how Annalise did previously, her palms skidding against the tiles and creating a squeaking sound.
“What the hell―” Catherine’s furrowed eyebrows were quickly unraveled when a stinging slap landed on her cheek, resonating across the otherwise silent canteen.
“You have some nerve!” Charles Montgomery roared. “Who gave you the courage to sleep around like a whore under my nose?!”
