Chapter 292: Dingy Little Boat
Caleb moved closer and pressed the gun to the small swell of her belly. Amelia immediately fell silent, frozen with crippling fear. If Caleb were to shoot― no, if he were to even hit her, the baby would be in trouble.
“I see you understand what’s at stake,” Caleb said. “Now let’s move, before your little band of warriors catch up. Bring her to the boat.”
“What do we do with the man?” one of the thugs asked, kicking Michael Kentwood in the leg. Her father groaned in pain.
“Let him go!” Amelia cried out. “It’s me you want, not him! I’ll go with you, so let him go!”
“Very true. Such an old man deserves freedom after all this trouble,” Caleb said with a nod before addressing his hire. “Toss him over the pier and let him swim with the sharks.”
“No Caleb, you can’t― Dad! Dad!” Amelia screamed helplessly as two men grabbed her listless father by his arms, hauling him away. “Caleb, stop this!”
“He always wanted to swim with the fishes. I’m leaving him here for Matteo to pick up, ” Caleb said sincerely. “He should have someone to remember you by since you’ll be busy as my wife. Now that that’s taken care of, it’s time to get on the boat.”
The rest of the men flanked Caleb as he made his way out of the warehouse. Amelia screamed as loud as she could for help, but the man restraining her simply clasped a meaty hand over her mouth, muffling her voice immediately.
“Save your effort,” Caleb chided cheerfully. “You’ll be doing a lot more screaming later when you’re with me. One of you will come with me to escort us off. The rest of you, keep an eye out for any intruders. If you manage to kill Matteo Montgomery, you will be set for life!”
At his words, the men straightened their backs and eagerly spread out throughout the surrounding area with their flashlights turned on, sweeping beams of light all around the surrounding area. No one wanted to miss out on the bounty that came with Matteo Montgomery’s head on a pike. It would be enough for any one of them to start over a new life abroad, with tons of spare cash to live like kings.
Amelia’s eyes darted frantically as she was led out, desperately trying to catch a sign of her rescuers. Unfortunately, it was pitch dark outside, and there didn’t seem to be any new vehicles in the area.
The only pinpricks of light came from the flashlights used by the men, as well as the dim lights inside the warehouse. The pier was depressingly dark, and the only source of illumination came from the moonlight, which reflected off the choppy waters.
Caleb seemed to already know where he was supposed to go, and the men ushered him to a small dinghy speed boat. The cool sea breeze brushed past Amelia, and she shivered, but not from the cold.
If she guessed things right, Caleb must be planning on fleeing the city by boat and taking her with him. He climbed into the boat and held out a mocking hand.
“It’s your turn now, darling,” Caleb said with a mocking smile.
But before Amelia could be manhandled into the boat, she flailed as hard as she could, trying her best to get away. She opened her mouth wider and bit down on the hand covering her lips, causing the man holding her to hiss in pain. She swung her leg back as far as she could, hoping to get him in the crotch.
“This bitch―” The man cursed as he tightened his hold, but Amelia had taken that brief opportunity to squirm out of his hold.
She grabbed the flashlight the second man was holding and promptly aimed it at Caleb’s face, temporarily blinding him.
A groan of surprise came from Caleb, and Amelia took that as the opportunity to sprint away. She ditched the light, tossing it as far as possible so that they wouldn’t be able to follow her via the light she cast, running blindly into the dark.
The police officers that Matteo had ordered to tail her should be surrounding the area. She just needed to get close enough to the borders―
Amelia stopped in her tracks when she heard a loud splash, quickly drawing her attention. The sound did not come from where she left Caleb, which could only mean one thing.
“Dad…” Amelia gasped in fright, a wave of cold enveloping her entire body as her feet instinctively sprinted toward the direction of the noise. There was no time to spare. She couldn’t afford to wait for the police officers to come find them. By the time they did, her father would have already drowned!
“Ah ah, not so fast!”
Amelia barely even registered the sound before a weight collapsed against her back, sending her crashing onto the ground, the palms of her hands scraping across the dirt and grass. A stinging pain shot through her hands, but more than that, a sudden jabbing pain erupted in her lower belly, causing her to break out in a cold sweat.
Yet, Caleb didn’t stop to care about the moans of pain that had slipped past Amelia’s lips nor the sheen that had appeared across her forehead. He leisurely stood up, hauling Amelia up on her feet at the same time, only to realize she was limp and without strength, desperately clutching onto her stomach as she squeezed her eyes shut.
“Please… Stop this…” Amelia gasped out in pain, but her words were nothing more than wind in Caleb’s ear.
“Did you think you could run away so easily?” he taunted with a bark of laughter before throwing Amelia over his shoulder.
Air was immediately knocked out of her lungs from that movement, adding to the pain that was quickly spreading all across her body. She could barely even move her limbs at this point― the pain was just so numbing that Amelia was starting to see spots in her vision.
“Don’t bother trying, Amelia,” Caleb warned. “If you’re good, I’ll even play as the perfect little father to the bad seed growing in your belly. I promise to treat them just the same as the rest of our future children. Otherwise, don’t blame me for being cruel!”
