Chapter 293: Reinforcements
Unfortunately, Caleb Walton wasn’t a complete imbecile. Matteo stared down at the unconscious thugs with disdain as the police officers cuffed and took them away. His knuckles were bruised and bloody, and his muscles burned at the impromptu workout. Aiden wasn’t faring much better; he had overestimated himself in the fight and had gotten punched in the face for good measure.
At least they have handled the scouts before they could report anything back to Caleb.
“That bastard hired mercenaries,” Aiden hissed angrily. “That fucker has really gone off the rails!”
After all, it was one thing to hire random thugs, bodyguards, or security officers. For Caleb Walton to straight up dig into underground society to hire mercenaries for a kidnapping― clearly it showed that he was planning to take down as many rescuers as he could!
This meant that part of him wholly expected Amelia to call for reinforcement. Either that, or he had faith that Matteo would come chasing Amelia, like a dog with a bone.
“That’s not news,” Matteo shot back. “Time’s of the essence. Let’s split up and search the place. The other policemen nodded in agreement, and they spread out to cover more ground.
Matteo and Aiden decided to stay close together― during the earlier skirmish with the scouts, they couldn’t help but notice that their opponents seemed to deliberately target Matteo with great vengeance, as though Caleb had promised them rewards for bringing his head.
They made their way through the port, their eyes peeled for the sounds of any skirmish. There was the sound of running footsteps and Matteo could spot bright pinpricks of light.
“Find him!” The mercenaries laughed and jeered to themselves. “After we get rid of him, our lives will be great again!”
“Wish I got the job to hold that sweet piece of ass,” one of the men sighed longingly.
Matteo immediately gripped Aiden’s arm to stop him from lunging forward. They bristled at his words; there was no doubt that the man was referring to Amelia.
However, his next words caused both of them to freeze.
“Hey, at least you’re not the ones stuck with tossing that old man off the pier. It’s like throwing out the garbage,” another one chimed in.
Matteo met Aiden’s eyes and saw his own shock reflected in them.
Michael Kentwood had been tossed off the pier?
There was no time to lose. Matteo quickly sent a message to the police officers, telling them to search the pier while he and Aiden hurriedly snuck away. The pier wasn’t too far away, but with its large size, it was a hassle to search in broad daylight, let alone in the middle of the night without much visibility.
“Over there!” Aiden pointed out.
The surface Aiden had pointed to had ripples and bubbles rising to the surface, with splashes of water staining the wooden planks beneath their feet. As soon as he spoke, one of the police officers immediately dived into the water where Aiden gestured, emerging shortly after with the older man in his arms.
Michael Kentwood coughed out mouthful after mouthful of water. His wrists were burning and stinging as he raised them to wipe the water off his face, the saltwater prickling him. Every breath he gulped wasn’t enough to fill his deprived lungs, and he took a huge breath after another.
“Are you alright?” Aiden asked, crouching down as he patted Michael’s back.
He shared a glance with the police officer who had dived in to pull Michael Kentwood out of the water.
The officer asked, “Mr. Kentwood, did you see where Caleb Walton had taken your daughter?”
“He… He said he was taking her to a boat,” Michael wheezed out, coughing as he did.
Aiden and Matteo immediately shared a glance. If they managed to get out of the city via the waterways, it might be difficult to catch them until who knows when. Without wasting a second, the two brothers darted away, leaving Michael Kentwood in the hands of the police officers. They didn’t bother looking back.
It wasn’t difficult to find Caleb and Amelia. After all, Amelia’s voice could be heard screaming into the dead of the night.
Matteo and Aiden turned their heads in sync in the direction of her voice, their feet rushing them to the scene.
“Let go of me!” Amelia yelled, and it was soon followed by the distinct purr of the speedboat’s engine.
By the time the two men reached the port, the speedboat had just taken off.
“Aiden, wait―”
Matteo’s warning came a little too late. Aiden sprinted forward and without hesitation, leapt clean off the wooden planks and soared through the air. His arms and legs flailed for a second before he miraculously landed on the back of the speedboat, a mere hair’s breadth away from ending up in the water.

“What―?” Caleb had barely even turned back in time to receive a punch that landed smack on his cheek, a sickening crunch of bones cracking echoing into the night.
Matteo, on the other hand, had raced to the spare boat available the moment Aiden darted off. He sailed after them, increasing the speed to catch up with Caleb’s boat.
“You crazy son of a bitch!” Caleb said with an impressed cackle. He ducked and dodged Aiden’s hit before trying to counter one of his own, narrowly missing his opponent’s stomach. “Last I checked, normal people aren’t that enthusiastic about their sister-in-law.”
Aiden said nothing in reply. He merely gritted his teeth and struck again, faking a punch before immediately slamming the right side of Caleb’s stomach. The latter didn’t dodge in time and air was immediately knocked out of his lungs, causing him to keel over for a moment.
“Matteo!” Amelia gasped when she noticed Matteo’s speedboat racing side by side with Caleb’s.
“Hang on!” Matteo said.
“Do I have a choice?!”
Unfortunately, Caleb veered his head just in time. When he noticed Matteo’s vessel right next to his, he scowled and reached for his pocket.
Amelia’s eyes widened when she saw Caleb withdraw the gun that he had confiscated previously, his finger resting on the trigger for a fraction of a second, the barrel of the gun aimed straight at her and Matteo.
She wasn’t the only one who noticed; Aiden did too. When the trigger was pressed and the gun went off, a figure jumped in front of them in a blur. The impact never came― it was solely absorbed by Aiden, who stood in front of them. Blood quickly seeped into the white fabric of his shirt, blooming into a scarlet flower on the right of his chest.
Seeing that he had failed to hit his primary target, Caleb clicked his tongue in annoyance before cocking the gun once more. However, this time, he didn’t manage to set it off.
Aiden pounced forward with a grunt, wrapping his arms around Caleb’s torso before throwing the both of them off the boat.
