Chapter 300: Light of My Life
Months later…
“Stop walking back and forth like that,” Aiden chided with a scowl. “You’re going to wear a hole straight through to the foundation of the building.”
Matteo scowled as he tossed Aiden a glare. “And you’re any better?” he said, looking pointedly at the pile of torn papers that surrounded Aiden, papers he had been picking at for the last couple of hours to relieve his anxiety.
Aiden merely scoffed as he tossed the remaining paper bits in his hand onto the ground, gaining the disdainful glares of the nurses who passed by. However, none of them dared to say anything to this pair of brothers.
They had been guarding the doors to the hospital’s delivery room for the last seven hours. With each hour that passed, the duo only turned more and more frantic. Matteo’s pacing increased in speed, while Aiden had gone through enough papers that he could match the efficiency of an office paper shredder.
Amelia wasn’t supposed to give birth so early― she had two more weeks left before her projected due date, but when she woke up with bad contractions, Matteo carted her first thing to the hospital with her emergency bag.
Before he knew it, he was locked out of the delivery room as Amelia was wheeled away, and Aiden was left as his only company.
“Why are you here?” Matteo asked, tucking his hands into his pockets, trying his best to remain calm but failing miserably. “How did you even know?”
“Benji Wales told me,” Aiden said. “He mentioned his wife had to rush to the hospital in the middle of the night. Figured it might be Amelia since Michelle is the doctor in charge.”
Matteo clicked his tongue but said nothing else. After all, Benji Wales didn’t specify who the patient was― that was Aiden’s educated guess. And frankly, Matteo didn’t mind the company. He needed someone to help take him off his thoughts.
He turned his gaze to stare at the closed doors, the light still brightly lit, signaling that the operation was still in progress.
“She will be fine,” Aiden said. “Amelia will be fine.”
Matteo raised an eyebrow. “I never said she wouldn’t be.”
“I was just trying to comfort you, asshole―”
Aiden was abruptly cut off by the piercing wail of a baby. The two men exchanged glances, and Aiden shot up to his feet from the chair he was previously perched on. He nearly tripped over the paper pieces in his haste.
Doctor Michelle emerged from the delivery room shortly after and slightly stepped back when Matteo and Aiden both charged toward her.
“How is she?” Matteo asked. “How’s my wife?”
“The mother and baby are both fine,” Doctor Michelle said, blinking in surprise. Her tired eyes widened for a second before returning to its usual state when she realized who it was.
“Congratulations,” she said to Matteo. “It’s a baby boy.”
Matteo barely even spared the nurse a glance. Instead, he looked left and right, trying to see the inside of the delivery room, but the door closed too quickly.
Seeing his reaction, Michelle merely sighed. “Mrs. Montgomery is currently resting. You may see her and your child in the recovery room later.”
Only with the reassurance that Amelia was fine did Matteo finally tear his gaze away from the door.
“She will be moved to the recovery room shortly after, along with your son,” Michelle said. “You may visit then. Before that…” She looked pointedly at both men, wincing a little. They both looked like they had seen better days. “Try to get something to eat. If you’re going to be carrying the baby later, it’s best to make sure you have the strength and energy for it.”

By the time Matteo and Aiden had shoved a sandwich and a coffee down each of their throats, Amelia was already resting in the recovery room with her newborn. Matteo rushed forward towards her, while Aiden lingered further behind, just so that he could give the little family of three a moment to gather themselves.
He decided to use his phone to record a snippet for posterity. Surely they would appreciate it later. He also decided to shoot a quick message to inform everyone else about the successful birth, because the new parents were too busy fussing over their baby to do anything else.
“Amelia, how are you feeling?” Matteo asked anxiously.
In the month leading up to the birth, he had read every single birthing book he could lay his hands on, as well as watched all sorts of documentaries about childbirth and infant care. As such, his mind was full of thoughts about how many things could go wrong, even after the baby was born. Amelia could bleed out and die, the baby could fall asleep and die…
As though she could sense every terrifyingly morbid thought rattling in his head, Amelia looked up and winced.
“Matteo, I’m fine. Michelle administered an epidural in time, so I only felt pain for that brief period. But what happened to you?”

“I’m fine, I’m fine,” Matteo said, breathing out to calm himself down. His wife was fine.
Amelia was lucid, and she was still staring at him with concerned eyes as though he was the one who required medical attention and not her, the goddess who pushed out their son with nothing but her willpower.
Their son.
He leaned down and peered at the tiny bundle in her arms. Wrapped in a baby blue fleece blanket, he was a perfect angel in Matteo’s eyes. Their son was held in Amelia’s arms, his eyes half-closed.
“He’s perfect, he looks just like you,” Matteo breathed out a reverent sigh. “Thank you for all your hard work.”
“Well, it’s not as though you didn’t do anything,” Amelia chimed in playfully. “But you’re right. I did most of the gestating.”
Her eyes misted over with pride. They shared a moment as husband and wife gazed down at their newly born son.
They were now parents. Wasn’t it incredible?
“I think he looks more like you though,” Amelia said.
“Nonsense,” Matteo shook his head. “He has your face.”
The both of them began to cheerfully bicker over who their son resembled more, with no end in sight. Then Amelia realized there was still another adult hanging by the door. Someone who could help resolve this disagreement.
“Come in, Aiden. Why are you loitering outside like a criminal?” Amelia asked, laughter in her voice.
“I was trying to give the three of you privacy,” Aiden grumbled, but he couldn’t help the smile that crossed his face as he stared down at his nephew. He was so peacefully quiet despite the wails it let out just moments prior.
“He’s so small…” Aiden gasped as he peered down at the infant. “Wow. Those fingers are tiny.”
“Aiden, who do you think our child takes after?” Amelia asked expectantly, while Matteo shot his brother a meaningful glance.
Aiden stared down at his nephew and squinted. There was a pregnant pause as he considered the baby’s face, before he finally sighed.
“How would I know? He just looks like a baby,” Aiden complained. “They all look like a wrinkly ballsack.”
As if he heard Aiden’s words, the baby opened his eyes and gave him a baleful glare. It perfectly mirrored the expression Matteo gave him.
“On second thought Matteo, that’s definitely your face,” Aiden said. “Are you going to name him Matteo Jr.?”
“Of course not,” Matteo immediately rejected that idea, his eyes darting to his wife in panic.
They have shortlisted several names, but Amelia claimed she would know which name was the right one to give when she saw her son. Matteo wasn’t going to fight her on it, but he did worry that Amelia would be so addled by exhaustion that their firstborn would be named something utterly nonsensical.
“…Dear? You wouldn’t name him after me… right?” Matteo prompted again.
Amelia smiled.
“Oh sweet God,” Aiden said from the corner where he stood. “Please no. This planet has only got enough room for one Matteo Montgomery. It cannot handle another.”
“How about Elios?” Amelia suggested.
Matteo brightened up in delight. “The sun.”
“Yes,” Amelia said, just as Matteo tenderly reached forward and stroked Amelia’s cheek. “Like how you are the light of my life, and now him too.”
