Chapter 638: Chapter 638: New Weight, New War
The night finally came, and Damon felt a flicker of nerves he hadn’t felt in a long time.
It was a new weight class, a fresh challenge that made him feel both excited and restless.
He moved around in the back, shadowboxing to stay loose.
He wore new shorts, white and gold, different from the usual gear he was known for.
They were lighter, cut higher than his usual tights, more freedom to move, more comfort.
The show continued outside, the crowd roaring as the undercard fights played out.
Damon listened to the noise, breathing steadily, waiting for his name to be called.
In this new division, with new eyes watching, he felt the weight of proving himself all over again. But that was okay. Damon Cross had never been one to back down from a fight.
He felt like a new kid in school, though he’d never actually known what that felt like.
After leaving Ireland at a young age, schooling wasn’t something he got to experience.
Still, that feeling of stepping into the unknown, of sizing up everyone else, it was there tonight.
He was busy on the pads with his training partner, moving through combinations while they talked about the fight. Damon’s punches cracked against the pads, each shot sharp and precise.
“Jon likes to push forward, yeah?” Damon asked between sets.
His partner nodded, holding the pads steady. “Yeah, but he’s not wild. He’ll throw a couple of feints, wait for you to overcommit. You gotta stay sharp, don’t bite too hard on his movement.”
Damon slipped to the side, working an angle as he fired a left hook. “I’ve seen that. He does it a lot when he’s trying to set up that left body kick too.”
“Exactly,” his partner said, rotating his shoulder to keep the pad steady. “If you stay patient, you’ll see it coming. Don’t give him the opening for the clinch, though, he’s heavy up top. He’ll lean on you.”
Damon worked the pads again, shifting his weight. “I’m not worried about the clinch,” he said. “He’ll try to lean, but I’ve got the footwork to stay out of it.”
His partner grinned, tapping Damon’s gloves lightly. “That’s what I want to hear. Let’s get your timing right, so you can make him miss and pay.”
They kept working, the steady rhythm of the pads and the low conversation keeping Damon focused.
The nerves didn’t vanish, but they settled into something steady, something that felt like a fighter getting ready to go to war.
But he strengthened his resolve. He had conquered the middleweight division, and he believed he could do the same here.
He wasn’t a stranger to Jon Dlachovizc either. They had fought once before, back when Jon was cutting down to middleweight.
Damon had come out on top, but he knew this wouldn’t be the same.
He remembered the saying in the fight game. “When fighting the same person twice, train and fight like it’s a new person while still applying what you learned.”
It meant you couldn’t assume anything. Jon wouldn’t be the same fighter he was back then. Damon wouldn’t be, either.
He knew Jon had probably spent hours reviewing the old footage, figuring out what he did wrong, patching up the holes Damon had exploited.
That was how it always went at this level. The smallest slip, the tiniest detail, and a fight could turn. Damon welcomed that challenge.
He didn’t want the same fight as last time, he wanted the better fight. The one that would prove he could handle this division, too.
He soon joined the others on the couch, settling in to watch the rest of the show while he waited for his own fight.
The energy in the locker room was quiet but focused, everyone lost in their own routines and thoughts.

Svetlana and Ava hadn’t come this time. Damon knew it was for the best.
Ava hadn’t cried when he left, not this time. She had gotten used to it, him leaving and always coming back.
The gym had become part of their life, and she seemed to understand in her own small way.
But when Svetlana left, it was different. Ava would cry, reaching out and trying to follow her mother.
Damon knew it was just how things were, but it always tugged at his heart a little, hearing that small voice call for her mother when she was gone.

The fight they were watching on TV was interesting. From the start, it was one-sided. The favorite was in complete control, dominating every exchange.
The challenger had come in strong, throwing wild punches and trying to pressure forward.
But the favorite slipped each shot like it was nothing, using his footwork to stay just out of range.
Every time the challenger threw, he missed, and every miss gave the favorite an opening.
By the second round, the fight had turned into a clinic.
The favorite landed at will, stinging jabs that snapped the challenger’s head back, hard leg kicks that kept him stuck in place.
The challenger looked desperate, swinging big but never finding anything that landed clean.
The commentary team couldn’t stop talking about how calm and composed the favorite looked. “This is how you make a statement,” one of them said. And it was true, he wasn’t just winning, he was dismantling the challenger piece by piece.
The third round was more of the same. The favorite had barely taken a clean shot the whole fight.
When the bell finally rang, there was no doubt in anyone’s mind. It was a masterclass.
One-sided and decisive. Damon and the others watched, taking in every moment as they waited for their own battles to come.
The night went on, each fight bringing them closer to the main event.
The excitement in the locker room built with every highlight reel knockout and every close decision.
Damon stayed calm, watching with the same measured focus he used in the cage.
The noise from the crowd outside grew louder with each passing fight.
The undercard was done. The co-main event was next, and then it would be his turn.
He kept his hands warm, his breathing steady. The moment was close. He was ready.
