Chapter 121: 121- Bring It On!
“Hey. I asked you something!” Rafael said after taking down four targets quite expertly.
“I can’t talk,” she said haughtily “Let me focus. Ok?”
Her tongue was now out, touching the corner of her mouth.
“I can let you win if you tell me the big secret of your life,” he bantered flashing a mischievous grin.
“Ha-ha. Nice try. Get lost,” she uttered and then she realized how close she had gotten to him by just this simple game.
He was sure a charmer but a gentleman through and through.
Marissa is lucky, man.
“What? What did you say?” her eyes went wide when she detected amusement in his voice.
“Don’t tell me. Did I say that out loud?” she chewed her lip in embarrassment.
“Yes. You did. And thank you!” he laughed.
They kept passing taunts to each other when suddenly Rafael screamed, “Ha! Got ya!” he had at last managed to take her down.
“Jerk! If kids are awake, you’ll be out of this apartment and Gerard will be sitting here enjoying some other game with Marissa.”
“You are a brat, Dr. Sophie,” He knew she was bantering that’s why gave a quick glance to the kids’ bedroom.
They both were now dead tired and were leaning back, all relaxed.
“Let me have a look at the kids,” She was about to get to her feet when he held his hand up to halt her midway.
“No need! I’ll do that.”

“So why become a gynecologist when you don’t even practice it anymore,” he said after taking a huge sip from his beer bottle but the response he got, was a small cushion that hit his hard chest.
He raised it to his face and tossed it aside.
“You are making it look like I am responsible for it,” he finished the bottle in one go and placed it on the table.
“Partly, yes.”
“Excuse me?” he thought he heard her wrong.
“I said yes. You are partly responsible. You barged into my office and threatened me. I wanted to join Marissa after packing up everything but had to leave the place overnight. Marissa was sure that your investigators must be after us, so she wanted us to stay low key,” Guilt was evident on his face.
“So, you gave up your career for Marissa?” he asked her in the gentlest voice.
“Not exactly,” she opened the pack of crisps and popped some in her mouth, “I did it for them,” she spoke with full mouth and pointed towards the kids’ room’s door.
Rafael had seen how they all had come together to raise his kids. Flint, Sophia, and Marissa.
Marissa was lucky to have such sincere friends in her life.
“I …” he sighed loudly, “I owe you an apology.”
“No need,” she threw a playful punch on his arm, “We might get even… soon.”

He tilted his head to look at her, “And how would you do that?”
“I …” she curved down her lips, “I might barge into your office and create a havoc. Just ask your guards not to throw me out or get me arrested.”
“Great idea!” he reached out for some crisps from her pack, but she was quick to slap his hand.
“Take another one,” she gestured with her eyes towards the coffee table, “there are so many lying here.”
A hint of annoyance flickered in his eyes, “I brought them, Sophie. If you remember…”
“Yeah… yeah…but you are using my sofa and just used my console and my TV…”
She could go on with it when Rafael laughed hard but then had to cover his mouth suddenly. He didn’t want to be loud as the house was small and the kids would get disturbed.
Sophia had a knowing smile on her lips when she dropped the pack on his lap and got up.
“Where are you going?”
“To get another beer,” when he tried to speak, she stopped him, “Now don’t tell me it’s yours and you bought it.”
“Yes, it’s mine. But you are allowed to have it.”
“I don’t need your permission,” she called out and brought two more bottles from the fridge.
“So. Why were you sad, Sophie?”
“Sorry?” she gave him a confused look.
“I’m asking about your sadness, and don’t you dare lie to me,” he warned her, “My wife is out on a date with another man. What about you?” when she didn’t speak, he raised his hands defending himself, “Fine. Don’t tell if you aren’t comfortable.”
After the game and all that banter, she was feeling more relaxed around him. He might be cold-hearted but right now all he seemed was a mushy, fun-loving big brother.
“I went to White Palace today…as I told you…” he just nodded in answer, his expression still serious, “and there I met someone and the silly me…” she facepalmed, “I must have talked to him for few minutes and wanted his contact number. I wish I had asked for it but … I don’t think he was interested in me as I was not wearing anything fancy and…”
“Wait a minute,” he raised his index finger, “Did you ask the name of this dude?”
“Yeah. I did. Joseph. His name was Joseph,” Her eyes were constantly on her lap while telling this embarrassing story to Rafael, but when they traveled to his face, he was trying to bite back the amusement yet was failing miserably.
She glared at him, “Did… did I say something wrong?”
“No, silly,” Rafael ruffled her hair, “I guess this is the time to make it up to you for what I did in the past.”
“Sorry?” poor her didn’t understand what he was saying.
“Nothing,” he smiled brightly, “interested in another match? I mean ready to lose again?”
She rolled her eyes and switched on the TV again.
“This time, I’ll be the winner. Get it through your thick skull, Rafael Sinclair!” she stuck out her tongue and Rafael smirked.
He had to admit that he was enjoying her company.
He made a mental note to talk to Joseph. He owed this much to the woman who took care of his kids in his absence.
Her voice drew him out of his thoughts, “What are you thinking, Sinclair? Scared? Huh?”
Rafael smiled and held up his console, “Not at all, Dr. Sophie. I’m all ready! Bring it on!”
