Chapter 190: 190- Emotionally, Mentally, Physically
“I want to become a mom. I want to carry Rafael’s child here,” Valerie’s lips quivered when she placed her palm on her flat belly, rubbing it gently.
Today she was depressed more than ever.
“Oh, Valerie,” Nina covered her hand with her own, “I’m so sorry.”
They were in the car, going back to the hotel from the office. After experiencing humiliation when Marissa got inside the office, they didn’t know what to do anymore with their time.
They still couldn’t get hold of Rafael.
The moment Valerie heard comforting words from Nina, she couldn’t take it anymore and started crying. Her napkin was pressed against her mouth.
“I could never tell you, but I tried for a baby. I swear, I tried. I’ve been going to several doctors for the past three years,” she hiccupped, “B…but Rafael… he stopped showing interest in me.”
Valerie had to keep it low, because of the presence of the driver.
“Oh, Valerie,” Nina hugged her daughter-in-law, “I didn’t know you were going through so much. Why didn’t you tell me?”
Val kept crying in Nina’s embrace.
“Val! Sweetheart! Listen!” Nina pushed her back to wipe her face with another napkin, “You need to work on your relationship with Rafael. Do you hear me? You can’t give up like this.”
She told her firmly holding her wet face.
“What can I do, Nina?” she moved her head, trying to diminish her pain. Her tears were flowing down her cheeks, “I think I have lost him to Marissa. What a fool I was! How could I think that she would never return? Why I forgot about her?”
Nina asked the driver to stop the car near a deserted Café.
“Come on. Let’s have some coffee here,” she almost dragged Valerie out of the car.
Valerie wiped her face with the back of her hand and looked around.
She hesitated as they entered, her eyes darted around, taking in the worn furniture and peeling paint.
It was a small, dimly lit café with only a few tables scattered around. It felt like a forgotten place. Almost haunted.
The only good thing about this place was the faint smell of coffee beans, hanging in the air.
Nina led her to the corner table, away from the windows, where they could have some privacy. It was too dangerous to speak in the car due to the presence of the driver.
Valerie sat down trying to suppress her raw emotions. Nina eyed her daughter-in-law worriedly. The girl was acting as if her old injuries were reopened.
There was a display board near the counter that said, ‘Self-Service.”
Nina signaled to the lone barista behind the counter, “Two coffees. Black.”
The order reminded Valerie of the numerous girls’ dates they both had in the past. They always enjoyed their black coffee along with some snacks.
Nina reached across and gently touched Valerie’s hand, drawing her attention back, “Listen to me, Val,” her tone was soft but firm, “Since when did you learn to give up like this? The Valerie I knew, didn’t know how to give up.”
When Valerie stayed quiet, Nina pursed her lips, “You were never, the one who gave up, Val. I know this is hard, but you need to remember who you are and who she was,” she pointed out.
Valerie knew who she was referring to. The same woman who turned her life upside down by her sheer presence.
“He had stopped getting near me. Initially, I thought he was recovering from his eye surgery, but he kept slipping away from my hands…” She hesitated for a moment before continuing.
“Speak!” Nina almost commanded, a silent encouragement to continue, “Don’t hold back. If you need my help, Valerie then I need to know everything about it.”

Valerie nodded and chuckled which carried no humor, “W-we hardly got intimate after his surgery … maybe…” she shrugged, “Twice… yeah only twice.”
Nina’s jaw was almost touching the floor, “What are you saying, Val.”
Valerie nodded with a broken smile, “He didn’t want to get closer, Nina. Why do you think I kept myself busy going on these trips? I wasn’t getting enough attention from my husband,” fresh tears started getting down her face.
“I wanted to keep myself occupied,” She got hold of the napkin, Nina offered her and wiped her face.
“Did you two try couple therapy?”
“We did. But no change,” she said with a tsk, “one day… he was fine with me, making love in bed and the next…” she chewed her upper lip and then looked at Nina, “and then poof. Everything changed.”
Nina who was examining her face, bent a little ahead, “Do you think… he was doubtful…I mean,” Nina swiped her tongue over her lips and chuckled, “like maybe he knew and…”
“I don’t think so,” Valerie shook her head, “if that was the case, he would have confronted me. He stayed kind. Kept showering me with presents. And dinners and… world tours.”
Nina seemed to take a sigh of relief. She didn’t want to be in the bad books of her son. Their coffees were ready, so she got up to collect the cups from the counter.
“Now listen to me, Valerie,” she placed the steaming cups on the table and slid one towards her, “You… need to get a grip of your scattered emotions.”
When Valerie tried to speak, Nina raised her hand, “Listen. Right now, we don’t have time to cry over spilled milk. I know there are so many things that we don’t agree on. But here,” she slammed her hand lightly on the table, “we need to take it very seriously.”
Valerie who was observing the black liquid in her cup, looked up. Her eyes were red and swollen from crying, “What if he doesn’t want me anymore, Nina? What if he has already made up his mind?” her voice trembled with fear and uncertainty.
Nina didn’t know how to console her.
However, the poor women didn’t know that when they both were planning strategies against Rafael and Marissa, the couple was planning to get closer to each other.
Not only emotionally.
Or mentally
But…
Physically.
