Chapter 258: 258- Abigail
Huddled in each other’s arms they were sitting on the couch. Marissa’s body was trembling with each sob. His strong arms were squeezing her tightly into him maybe as an effort to take away all her pain.
He wanted to protect her from all the hurt she had faced and all the pain she had felt in the past. Her face was buried in his chest, and her tears were soaking his shirt as she whispered between choked breaths, “When I came here… I… I promised myself to never let you back into my life. Never let you see my vulnerable side. But see! Here we are. Here I am! Back to square one.”
Rafael’s heart ached when she shared those raw emotions in her voice, “I loved you, for who you were. There was no money involved. No hidden agenda was involved. I didn’t have any ulterior motives. I just saw you talking to Val that day and knew I had fallen for you.”
Holding her face, he forced it a little to raise it and started wiping her face gently with his thumb. He was brushing those damp cheeks with tender care.
“Shh. I’m right here. I’m not going anywhere, Marissa Sinclair,” he was considering her feelings instead of brushing them off under the rug.
He wasn’t making fun of her. His thumb was brushing her tender cheeks with tender care. A side even he was unaware of.
He was never a softie. But this woman in his arms somehow managed to bring a lot of emotions out of him.
Cupping his cheek, she snuggled into his warm body some more, “I need to kiss you,” before he could react, she was already kissing him.
Of course, after that Rafael Sinclair had to be an equal participant.
Leaning his forehead against hers, his voice was low and soothing, “You are telling me about your feelings. Want to hear what I felt for you?”
He asked with an uncertain grin and Marissa thought she saw a faint glimmer in his eyes as if he was holding back his tears.
“Little Greene… I…” he was interrupted by the sudden buzz of the intercom. Irritation flashed across his features. Didn’t he instruct them not to disturb him after a single buzz or a knock?
Where was Dean?
He decided to ignore it, letting the sound fade in the background as he focused back on the woman who somehow looked more beautiful after she was done crying.
There were so many things, she didn’t know about him. About them. He wanted to tell her all of it today.
Before he could utter another word, the intercom started beeping again, the beeping continued for a few more seconds, as he kept his focus on Marissa.
Rafael exhaled sharply, irritation flashing across his face. He kissed the top of her head and whispered, “Let me handle this first,” he released her gently, getting up just as someone started banging the office door with full force.
“What the hell!” cursing under his breath, he stormed towards the door. The purpose was to kill the intruder.
He yanked it open with a scowl, only to find Dean standing there with a breathless expression on his face and wide eyes. Panic was written all over his face.
“What the fu*ck is wrong with you?” Rafael demanded, trying to suppress the desire to kill Dean.
“I’m sorry,” Dean looked behind him where Marissa was getting up from the couch, looking at him with a frown.
“You look worried,” she started taking small steps towards him. The first thought that came to her mind was Denzel, “Is Denzel alright? Last time, when we checked on him, wasn’t he getting better?”
“It’s Abigail,” Dean’s voice dropped to a whisper, “They have taken her to the hospital!” Dean informed him with a shaky voice and then turned to look at Marissa.
“Your friend, Sophia… she was trying to reach you but after no response, she contacted me.”
Marissa thought, her world had stopped in that instant. Abigail…
Without another word, Rafael held her hand and they rushed to the private elevator. Their hearts were pounding in their chests for their precious daughter.
Dean saw Marissa forgetting her purse on the couch and ran behind her, “Marissa. Take this!” with a thankful nod, she took it from his hands.

“I’m so sorry!” Emily was crying in the hospital corridor, “One minute they all were watching this animated action movie, and the next minute she stood up in her seat. First, I thought she was trying to copy some Kungfu Panda stunts but …”

Marissa could hear her weeping voice, but her eyes were glued to the small glass window of the kids’ ICU, where she could see the tiny frame of her daughter, being treated by the doctors.
She felt Rafael’s presence behind her and leaned back into him, “Rafael… Abigail,” she whispered, pointing to the bed.
It felt odd, yet comfortable. This was the first time she wasn’t alone in the hospital corridor during the entire ordeal. Sometimes Sophie used to accompany her, but she also had to stay with Ariel and Alex back home.
“She will be alright,” Marissa felt Rafael’s lips on her head, “Don’t you know?” he murmured close to her ear, “She is our strong baby. Just like her mommy.”
A senior doctor came out and gave a reassuring smile to the worried parents, “The situation is under control, Mr. and Mrs. Sinclair,” a small smile appeared on his lips, “Her heart stopped working for a few seconds. Now, thankfully, it started pumping again.”
A wave of overwhelming relief hit Marissa as she turned to Rafael. Without a word, she threw her arms around him, sobbing against his chest, “She is good. Our baby is alright, Rafael.”
Tears of happiness were streaming down her face, as she cried. Rafael held her close, his voice breaking as he whispered, “Yeah. She did it. Our baby did it.”

Marissa was pacing in the hospital room, as she glanced at Abigail who was sleeping peacefully in the hospital bed.
He watched her intently while sitting in the chair by the bedside.
“I need to stay, Rafael. Abi needs me,” she insisted, her voice carrying vulnerability.
Rafael shook his head gently, his brows furrowed, “Hey, the Perfect Mommy! You must be exhausted and haven’t slept in hours. I promise I’ll keep you updated.”
Marissa opened her mouth to argue, but Rafael raised his hand to silence her, “Love! Please go home. You need rest. Believe me, she is in good hands.
Marissa threw her arms in the air, “What if she wakes up and asks for me? She might need me. I can’t leave her alone.”
In the hospital visits, she had always stayed with Abigail and didn’t want to leave her side right now.
Just then Rafael’s phone which was placed on the side table, started ringing. Rafael picked it up, glancing at the caller ID before answering.
“Emily,” he tucked his phone between his shoulder and neck, speaking into the mouthpiece, “Yes Emily. Is everything good at home?”
After she heard Emily’s name, Marissa kept observing his face silently. She had somewhat guessed what the issue was.
It always happened whenever she stayed with Abigail in the hospital.
“Mr. Sinclair. Here, the kids are frantic and constantly asking about Abigail,” her voice was laced with concern, “I think one of you should be home with them. They really need you.”
Rafael could detect genuine worry in her voice. Alex’s and Ariel’s mental condition had almost slipped his mind.
“I understand, Emily,” he shifted the phone to his other ear, “Is there any way, you can keep them calm for a bit longer?”
“I’m trying, sir. But they keep asking if they can come over to see her,” she explained to him gently, “I tried to distract them with their favorite cartoons, but they’re just too anxious. They need to know from one of their parents that everything will be alright.”
Rafael ran a hand through his hair, trying not to think about it. But the more he wanted to shake it off the more it was pinching him.
How did Marissa keep managing all of it?
He jerked at the sudden touch on his arm and found Marissa watching his face intently. In her eyes, he saw a flicker of understanding.
She leaned in closer and murmured softly, “Ask her to tell them their favorite story,” She finished with a nod and Rafael was amazed.
She was aware of what Emily was talking about. They weren’t even on speaker.
After getting done with the call, Rafael left his seat and held Marissa by her shoulders, “Kids need you, love. Go home, be with them, and come back in the morning.”
Marissa’s shoulders slumped, knowing he was right.
In the past, Sophia was the one who stayed home with the kids and took care of them. However, now with Rafael in the picture, she needed to be with them.
For once, she wanted to remind them that now their both parents were present in their lives, and they weren’t alone anymore.
