Chapter 260: 260- Long Before Valerie

Marissa was sitting on Abigail’s bed clutching her child to her chest. Rafael was discussing her medication with the doctor.

“She is still too weak, Mr. Sinclair,” The doctor’s tone was serious but gentle, “Increase some protein in her diet. If we opt for surgery, she will need lots of strength and iron will. The good thing is she has already got plenty of willpower,” The doctor gave an affectionate ruffle to Abi’s hair as he spoke.

“Hey, little monkey! Now, no more jumping. Ok?” he warned the child with an easygoing grin.

They were discharging Abi with a list of instructions.

“I know,” Abi said in a small voice, “Ariel got spooked when she saw blood. I felt pain in here,” she placed her small hand on her chest.

Marissa kissed her head and leaned her cheek against it.

The doctor kept talking to Abi, keeping her distracted when a nurse went closer to take the cannula out of her hand.

“There won’t be any pain, Abigail. Trust me. You just need to be very brave,” the doctor leaned down to Abi’s eye level, “Come back to me when you are strong enough. And I promise you. We’ll make your heart, brand new,” he snapped his fingers, “just like that.”

Abi couldn’t even smile, “Will it hurt?”

“Ah!” The doctor looked up at the ceiling, “Not at all! I promise!” he then pinched her nose bridge, “Only if you hate Micky Mouse.”

Abigail giggled at that and pleaded with Rafael, “Can I have sprinkles, Daddy? Please?”

Rafael took her from Marissa’s lap and kissed her cheek, “Anything, chipmunk!”

“Do you think she would be able to attend the event, Rafael?” Marissa asked him worriedly. They both were sitting in the back seats, with Rafael holding Abi on his lap.

Rafael held his wife’s hand and kissed it, “You just heard the doctor, Marissa. Our daughter already has willpower. Our kids need to be there for hardly an hour, after that they will be back home with Emily. While you’ll stay with me throughout the event. I’m not expecting them to mingle with the guests.”

And that reminded Marissa of something else, “By the way… are you aware that our kids’ birthday is on the same day…” her eyes narrowed into thin slits.

Rafael knew that look. She was in her mama bear mode.

“Yeah. I know,” he said with a frown, “Why?”

“Don’t you want to celebrate it with them?” Rafael gave her a look that said Are you kidding me?

“That event will be the celebration, love,” he was brushing his knuckles along her cheekbones when something unexpected happened.

Abi saw what he was doing to her mom and held his wrist, trying to pull it away from Marissa’s cheek.

They both stared at their daughter in disbelief before they cracked up.

Marissa couldn’t believe it. That was what she had usually seen toddlers doing when they saw their parents getting close to each other.

Her kids had been genius, intelligent, understanding, and way ahead of their age. Then what got into Abi today?

That’s because they never had their father!

The same familiar voice that used to exist inside her head, spoke to her, these kids could never tell you that. But they needed a father figure. If they are doing something unexpected then it’s natural. For once, it is OK to be a baby and get spoiled by your parents.

Once they were out of the car, Rafael kissed Abi’s cheek and carried her to her room. A few minutes later, Emily brought Ariel and Alex so that they could see their sister.

“You need to sleep a lot and eat a lot and enjoy your life a lot, little one,” Rafael said placing Abigail gently on her bed.

“This house is so big, Daddy. And I can’t even play here,” she complained, and Marissa’s heart went out to her child.

“Aunt Sophie’s place was small, and no one could play there. I was happy there. Here, Alex and Ariel play and jump and run around from room to room. They leave me behind, they do whatever they want. I always follow them so slowly. When I reach them, they are somewhere else…”

The little child was trying to make them understand.

Alex and Ariel who were standing nearby with happy faces because their sister was back, now had a guilt-stricken expression on their innocent faces.

“We won’t play any jumping game, Abi,” Alex held his sister’s hand, “I promise we won’t leave you behind. We can play after you get your surgery.”

“Yes, the doctor told me to have lots of protein,” she then turned to her dad, “What is protein, Daddy? Is ice cream a protein too?”

Marissa and Emily stifled their laughter while Rafael pulled her little head to his chest and kissed her hair, “I’m sorry, Abi. There might be a little bit of protein in the ice cream but sadly it’s not the main source. Protein means meat and legumes and eggs, honey.”

“Yuck!” Abi made a face and all of them laughed loudly.

Alex and Ariel kept teasing her about meat because they all knew she loved eating her veggies more as compared to meaty treats.

“You look so tired, honey,” Rafael held her hand when they were leaving the kids’ room. Tonight, they both stayed with the kids until they went to sleep.

He circled his arm around her and pulled her to his side before planting a kiss on her temple, “Do you need a hot bath?” he squeezed her to him, and she quickly snaked her arm around his waist.

“You’re the one who stayed at the hospital, handsome. It’s you who deserve this kind of bath.”

Rafael watched her face closely. Before they had run to the hospital, he remembered what she was telling him.

She had been in love with him way before their marriage. When he used to be with Valerie.

Well! He also needed to open up to her about his feelings. He needed to stop acting like an as*shole and tell her how he felt about her even before he started dating Valerie.

Yes. He would tell everything to his wife.

When Marissa went to the bathroom, Rafael called Dean and asked him to arrange something special for them.

Right after the event, he would take his wife somewhere special and tell her everything. He would pour out his feelings to her, admitting that he had been into her, long before Valerie entered his life.
