Chapter 271: 271- After The Event (I)

“Ready to head out?” Marissa tilted her head, noticing Rafael leaning in close to her. His cologne was making it hard to focus.

She nodded, not letting it be evident that her pulse was quickened in a rapid beat. It was time for the surprise.

Something in her told her that he was planning something special for her.

Rafael caught Dean’s attention, by lifting his hand, “Hey, man, we’re heading out for the night,” he said.

Dean flashed a casual smile with a knowing look and nodded, “Have a good one, you two. Catch you later!” Dean replied waving them off.

As they turned around, Marissa stopped, forcing Rafael to halt in his steps, “Little Greene?”

“Just a moment, Rafael,” she went back to Dean, who was standing there with uncertainty.

“Is everything alright, Marissa?” he asked with a frown. Marissa didn’t know what got into her. She went ahead and hugged him, taking him by surprise.

Yes, they shared a good bond, but she never acknowledged it publicly.

“Thank you for everything you did tonight!” Marrisa’s voice carried genuine warmth.

“Now don’t be a… umm… fool,” Dean wasn’t sure if he should use such words for his boss’s wife, “it was my duty.”

She nodded with a sigh, “Yes, and I appreciate it.”

“Rest assured, I’ll always be here to help you,” he then looked ahead to where Rafael was observing them with a scowl. Just to tease him, he bent his head with a smug smile and whispered in her ear, “Let me know if you want to learn about business.”

Marissa was caught a little off guard. Why did he say that?

She followed his gaze and found her husband standing with a clutched jaw.

“No, thank you,” she rolled he eyes, “let’s leave it on my husband.”

“Fine!” Dean nodded, “You know I’ll be a call away whenever you need me.”

With a bright smile, Marissa turned around and walked back to her husband, “What was that about?” he questioned her with a curious tilt of his head.

His arm suddenly snaking around her neck to pull her to his side, “Nothing,” she shrugged, “he wants me to learn business.”

As they walked out of the party, the night air was pleasantly cool against her skin. Rafael removed his arm, and laced his fingers through hers, “Not a bad idea, actually,” he said glancing over at her.

“But I’m not interested,” she rested her head on his arm while walking slowly, “Running a billion-dollar business…”

“Umm hmm,” he stopped her to correct, “trillion-dollar!”

“Okay!” she chuckled softly, “handling a TRILLION dollar… business is a lot different than being a caterer. So, no, thank you.”

When they reached the door, he stopped. Holding her hand he observed her palm, “You don’t even know what you are capable of, Strawberry. There is a wildfire in you and that wildfire shouldn’t be limited to our bedtime only.”

Marissa’s face snapped up in disbelief but damn. There was no playfulness on his face or his eyes.

“Oh, you can’t be serious!”

“But I’m dead serious, love,” he kissed her head, “The ship I am sailing, you are the next officer in command. And with the captain gone, you need to be prepared to sail it. My wife can’t leave the ship to get wrecked against the rocks.”

Marissa felt her heart dropping in the pit of her stomach. Why was he talking like that?

She tucked a hair strand behind her ear, “I’m not liking this discussion, Rafael.”

“Sorry,” he immediately drew her to him, “wrong timing. Maybe some other time. Let’s go inside and get ready,” He let her go after giving her body a gentle squeeze against him.

“I just can’t wait to see what you’ve planned for us,” she said excitedly.

“Patience babe. You’ll see soon enough,”

Marissa’s belly was already fluttering with excitement as they pushed open the door.

The moment they stepped inside, they were greeted with the sight of Joseph and Sophia kissing on the couch.

Marissa gasped, “Ouch!”

The couple broke apart in a panic, wide-eyed and flustered.

They quickly got up with Joseph rubbing the back of his neck in embarrassment. Poor Sophia was straightening her skirt, fixing her hair awkwardly, “Uh… hey, didn’t expect you two so soon.”

Rafael raised a brow, all amused, “We weren’t expecting that either,” he said laughing under his breath.

Marissa couldn’t help but try to chew her lower lip to keep from cracking up. The situation was hilarious.

It reminded her of the incident when she and Rafael were kissing on the couch, with Abi sleeping on his lap and Sophie and Flint caught them red-handed.

“You guys can carry on,” she suggested with a cheeky smirk, “Carry on in the room. Joseph can stay the night if you want.”

Oh, man. Joseph looked so cute with that red face.

Sophie rolled her eyes, playfully, and shook her head, “Nah. We are good. You two enjoy your night. Don’t worry about the kids, they’re with their aunt.”

“Got it!” Rafael gave her a casual salute, “Then you two better behave,” He joked as they made their way to the bedroom.

Marissa looked back when she was walking out of the living room. They both were standing like two teenagers who were caught by their parents doing some indecent stuff.

Rafael was in the bathroom, and Marissa took the stool in front of the mirror to remove her makeup. She needed to apply conditioner to her hair for detangling the locks.

Due to her heavy mane, the hair expert had asked her not to wash her hair without a conditioner. She applied cleansing milk to her face and started removing her makeup.

Rafael’s phone, which was lying on the bed, started ringing. With a groan, she got up to get it when the bathroom door suddenly opened, and he came out with the towel wrapped around his waist.

Don’t look there. Don’t look at the sexy body. Behave yourself, Marissa.

She kept giving this TED talk to herself unless he turned to her after the call, “Honey, just give me a few more minutes. I need to go out for something. Just be ready. I’ll pick you up and we’ll leave immediately.”
