Chapter 273: 273- After The Event (III)
“I’m sorry. I made a mistake. Please forgive me,” Nina was crying badly. Her voice was trembling as she was sobbing uncontrollably. Marissa didn’t know how to react. At this point, she couldn’t decide if they were real tears or just crocodile ones.
Nina couldn’t be truly remorseful but tonight she wasn’t trying to manipulate the situation.
Being Nina Sinclair, this must be the first time she didn’t use her right to step inside her home. She didn’t cross boundaries this time, this might be the first time she hadn’t barreled through life on her own terms.
This time there was no force used, no entitled behaviors were flashed.
“Nina,” Marissa said softly but firmly, “I need you to leave.”
“Not until you forgive me, Valerie,” Sophie who was standing behind Marissa, chuckled sarcastically, crossing her arms with the air of disgust.
“Irony! Isn’t it? You’re here to seek her forgiveness yet you can’t even remember that she is Marissa, not Valerie,” Sophie’s voice was dripping in sarcasm, “How pathetic can a woman be, Nina.”
Nina wasn’t crying anymore but her tears were still gliding down her face. Her face was horribly swollen, and her eyes had turned into thin slits due to excessive crying.
“I’m sorry… it’s Marissa… yeah,” she corrected herself, the name was still struggling to leave her lips. A hollow laugh came out of her mouth that was barely audible, “Old habits die hard. Ha-ha. But those kids… they are my…”
“Don’t!” Marissa snapped, her voice slicing through the air. The timid Marissa who never knew how to speak for herself couldn’t hear about her kids from her dirty mouth. For the first time in years, she stood her ground, “Stay away from my kids!”
Nina started shaking her head violently, clasping her palms together in desperation, “N-no… please… don’t do that to me, Marissa… I might hate you and I might have preferred your sister all along. But those kids? They are my…”
“No!” Marissa roared, “They are NOT your kids, Nina. They are mine!”
Her voice echoed in the hall like thunder, and someone came running. She tilted her head and found her butler standing there. His footsteps were quick as he rushed to her side.
“Mrs. Sinclair? Is this woman giving you trouble?” he asked in a hoarse whisper with concern etched on his face.
Marissa raised her hand to make him quiet without taking her eyes off Nina. Her attention stayed on the woman’s face who became evil, five years back and threatened her that she would kill her kids.
“Do you remember what you said to me that day when I…”
“I remember it!” Nina interrupted quickly, “I remember everything.”
Without warning, Nina’s hand shot up and she slapped herself across the face with full force. Everyone standing there froze at the unexpected gesture. The butler, Marissa, and Sophie, even the guard standing nearby.
Marissa didn’t even flinch. She stood perfectly still, with her arms folded on her chest.
“She…” Sophia tried to break the silence and cleared her throat, “She needs to leave, Marissa…” She got closer to her friend, “She is a threat to us… she … is crazy…”
Marissa’s gaze stayed locked on Nina for what felt like an eternity. She had never seen Nina like this.
Vulnerable and desperate! Yet still clinging to some twisted sense of entitlement.
The woman was quietly standing there, her hands still joined.
Tears were still running down her cheeks.
“You need to go, Nina,” this time she was more assertive, leaving no room for negotiation, “I don’t want you here in my house. I don’t want you in my life. Nor do my kids need you… MY kids! Do you hear me, Nina? Those are my kids… and they won’t meet you,” Marissa took a step forward, her voice lowering to a cold whisper, “They will NEVER meet you!”
She got back and gazed at Nina with an indifferent stare, “Go back, Nina. There is nothing for you here.”
She then wiggled her finger to call the security guard closer, “Better make her leave the premises,” she muttered, making sure, Nina wouldn’t hear her, “But no need to use force.”
The guard nodded and Marissa didn’t take the time to shut the door on Nina’s face, “Let’s get back to the room, Sophie.”

Sophie held her hand gently and brought her back to her room. She made her sit and went to the intercom, “I’m asking someone to bring you hot chocolate.”
Marissa bobbed her head. She was still shaken by the confrontation. She had dreamed and planned for so long, about how she would confront Nina.
She would make her cry, she would pull the floor off her feet, she would insult her in front of the whole world, and then would live her life happily.
But she was wrong.
There was no happiness in confrontation.
She didn’t feel good. The burden that was supposed to be lifted off her shoulders had increased tenfold.
Tears in that woman’s eyes weren’t allowing her heart to stay at peace.
“You don’t look alright. What is it?” Sophie sat beside her, “your hands are so cold.”
Marissa held her friend’s hands tightly, “S-Sophie… just stay with me… ok?” Sophie nodded her head.
“I’m not leaving you, silly. B-but… where is Rafael? Shouldn’t he be here by now?”
Marissa felt like someone pushed her from the dream into reality. Sophie was right.
Why Rafael wasn’t here?
“He told me that he’ll be back soon,” Marissa looked at the clock worriedly. Sophia placed a pillow near her.
“Lie down for a minute, Marissa. Just close your eyes. Go to sleep if you must. Once Rafael will be here, go with him. The short nap might do wonders for you.”
Marissa smiled at the advice. They both had been telling this to each other for the last five years. To take short naps so that their cups can stay full as they couldn’t afford an empty cup.
“You have a point, buddy.”
“I always have a point, buddy!” Sophie winked.
