Chapter 293: 293- Heirlooms
Valerie opened her eyes sleepily and then squeezed them shut. Last night, she came to her parents’ place, because she had no place to spend the night.
She didn’t want to go to any cheap hotel. She might not have found her marriage certificate, but her jewelry was safe.
The jewelry also included Sinclair family heirlooms that were given to Marissa by Rafael and later Valerie didn’t let her take them.
Her parents didn’t have a spare room so right now this attic was her room that had a small mattress along with several metal boxes next to the wall.
Valerie’s suitcases were sprawled all over the floor that she had brought from Rafael’s place. Stretching herself, she got up and looked around. This room didn’t even have an attached bath, and she needed to go to the living room to use it.
Within a few days, she had gone from riches to rags.
“Don’t worry, Val,” she almost patted her shoulder, “you have still gotten your jewelry. You can still have enough money after selling family heirlooms.”
She secured her hair in an elastic band and then started looking for something suitable to wear. She was still deciding on her day’s attire when her door was knocked.
A middle-aged woman with a pleasant smile was standing in the doorway, “I need to clean the room, ma’am.”
Oh, thank God her parents had a cleaning lady otherwise they could expect her to make the place spotless.
“Sure. Please come in. I was leaving the room anyways,” the woman came in and started putting her stuff expertly in the suitcases.
Her clothes were also scattered around that she took out when she was looking for a suitable night suit last night.
Her bathroom trip was no more than a few minutes of showering. She was habitual of spacious bathrooms at her big house or the high-end hotels where she usually stayed but the bathroom at her folks’ place was a teeny tiny one that was more suitable for a doll house.
“Mom!” she came out with a towel wrapped around her hair, “where is hair drier? Is there any in your bathroom?”
Her mom who was placing a plate in front of her father gave that special wifey look to her husband and then shook her head, “I never used one, dear. Seems like, you have forgotten about our old life.”
Her husband’s plate had butter toast while she was having last night’s chicken strips that Valerie ordered for all of them.
“Oh, right!” Valerie made a mental note to buy a hairdryer the same day, “It’s something basic, Mom. You can’t air dry your hair in the winter season.”
“Well!” her mom shrugged, before placing coffee in front of her husband, “I never used it and never got sick.”
She took a bite of her chicken straps and closed her eyes in ecstasy.
Valerie gave a disgusted look at her plate and scrunched her nose, “Come on, Mom. You need to change your habits. You can’t eat your last night’s dinner like this. It’s not healthy.”
Her mom didn’t say anything. They were accustomed to Valerie’s high standards of living and never tried to correct her.
She took a chair at the table and looked for an extra plate, “What should I eat?”
Her parents gave her a blank look until her father laughed at her, “Your mum and I are getting older, child. Don’t expect us to serve you like we used to do when you were kids.”
He shifted his focus to his plate where his favorite toasted beauties were ready to be eaten.
“Urgh, Dad!” Valerie groaned, “Don’t forget, last night I ordered dinner so that mom didn’t have to cook.”
Ethan only gave her limited cash and it was almost running out by now. After feeding them a good dinner last night, she did deserve a decent breakfast.
“Listen, girl! You must be the daughter-in-law of the Sinclair family, but we aren’t your servants, ma’am,” her father raised his index finger in warning, “You are here living under our roof but don’t expect us to cook meals for you. That’s the kitchen. Go and make whatever you want. Just be careful about the eggs. One egg in a day is enough. No need to waste food.”
Valerie was taken aback and was silently watching her parents. These were the same parents who she used to help financially after getting married to Rafael.
“Mom! I’m not planning to squander your money. It’s just that I need some support for a few days then I’ll be on my own.”

Her mom ignored what she was saying and kept herself busy with chicken strips, “I think last night’s sauce has gone bad,” She tried smelling the tiny container and Valerie wanted to puke.
“Darling. Throw that away. Use ketchup instead,” her father advised her.
Her mom left the table to fetch the ketchup. When she returned, she had a cookie jar with her, “Here. Eat it. You can make coffee later.”
Valerie held the jar up to her eye level, “Can’t believe this!” Her parents’ change of behavior was shocking.
They always spoiled her and ignored Marissa. Val was always the bratty one but now when she was no longer Rafael’s wife, their attitude towards her had changed.
Her parents had already watched the live coverage of the MSin event where Rafael acknowledged Marissa as his wife. Last night when Valerie crashed at their place, she told them that she was no longer welcome at Rafael’s place.
They might not be over-excited to have her, but they didn’t show her indifference either.
Her father had finished his toast and was now loudly sipping his coffee, “Valerie. Make up your mind about breakfast. Your mom is having backache and needs you to help her in cleaning the house.”
Valerie couldn’t believe it. She wanted to snap at her father that he should be the one helping his wife but stayed quiet. She wanted to get out of here as soon as possible until something flashed her mind.
“Why would mom do the cleaning when you people have a reasonable cleaning lady?” her parents stared at her face in disbelief, “What! I just met her! She can clean the attic but not the rest of the house?”
Her parents looked at each other and then at her as if she had lost her mind.
“Love,” her mom placed her hand on her arm, “we don’t have any cleaning lady.”
Valerie wasn’t ready for this. Her eyes went up to the staircase as she raised her index finger, “B-but that… the lady in my room…”
With lightning speed, she got up and ran upstairs to the attic. Her parents kept calling her, but she ignored them.
After entering the room, she took a sigh of relief when checked her stuff. Her clothes were neatly folded, and her leather bag still had her jewelry.
She chuckled and started shaking her head, “Maybe it was a ghost who wanted to help me. Ha-ha. I guess I am being paranoid for no reason.”
She then looked for that particular heavy red pouch that had family heirlooms. It was nowhere to be found.
“What the fu*ck!” she mumbled and started looking for it frantically.
Nah! It wasn’t there in the suitcase, nor it was anywhere in the room.
The cleaning lady had left after taking Marissa’s heirlooms from her parents’ house.
