Chapter 295: 295- I Am Sorry
Valerie wanted peace that’s why she chose to sit at the back of this cheap café, nursing a cup of lukewarm coffee.
She never liked this café. It was too ordinary and too simple for her usual standards. She always preferred high-end ones but today she was here for some mental clarity. With the limited budget, she couldn’t spend the money carelessly.
Her credit cards were blocked, and the family heirlooms were stolen. She couldn’t even file a case against anyone as they were never hers in the first place.
She had enough jewelry for a few years of sustainability, yet she had to spend every penny carefully.
Her fingers were tracing the cup handle, absentmindedly. Even the color of the coffee was pathetic.
“Do I have to visit such places now? Why oh, why!” she rested her forehead on the table. Not in her wildest dreams had she ever imagined such a life for herself.
Just as she was about to take a small sip from her cup, the familiar sound of her name snapped her attention, “Valerie! Hi!”
She looked up and recognized an old fellow, Melanie.
Urgh. What is she doing here?
Valerie had acquaintances in Sangua city and most of them knew how much she despised such places.
Melanie was making her way towards her table with a surprised grin, “I can’t believe it! When did you return?”
Valerie never told any of her friends about her return to Sangua. Why would she tell Melanie?
“What a coincidence!” Melanie exclaimed, sliding into the seat opposite her without waiting for an invitation, “I didn’t expect to find you here of all the places.”
Valerie forced a smile; her mind was racing. She couldn’t tell Melanie about what happened recently in her life.
“Oh, Melanie… hey! What brings you here?”
Melanie raised a brow, giving her a once over, “As if you don’t know. I’m their regular client,” she then leaned back with a teasing grin, “I should ask you the same. You never liked this place. Something about it being ‘below your standards,” remember?”
Valerie winced inwardly but quickly recovered. She couldn’t afford enemies at this point in her life. Nor did she want Melanie to announce in her circle about her arrival.
She was sure, most of them must have seen the live coverage of the event and then Rafael’s death had been all over the news.
Managing a small smile on her face, she took another sip of the odd-smelling coffee, “Well. I, uh… thought I’d give it another try. You know… we all grow up with age. Things change, humans evolve.”
Gosh. She sounded like Marissa. That was how she used to grip everyone’s attention with her words.
“So, I thought why not try the same places again and form a more mature opinion,” she said adding a dismissive wave, “Besides today I’m enjoying its quietness.”
And I want you to leave me alone and let me think!
Melanie nodded but the bitch had a flicker of doubt in her eyes, “Oh. Right. That’s good…great actually,” she smiled awkwardly. Valerie could see she wasn’t convinced but said nothing.
The truth was too hard to admit. She wasn’t here to explore anything; she was here because she could no longer afford the lavish cafes, she once visited frequently with her friends.
“Anyway, what you’ve been up to?” Valerie effortlessly changed the subject, she wanted to steer the conversation away from her circumstances.
Melanie smiled again, thankfully moving along, “Oh the usual… work, family, and th-this never-ending hustle…”
Valerie took a sigh of relief when the topic moved away from her preferences and choices. However, it was short-lived,
“I’ve heard, Marissa is Rafael’s wife. Is it true?” Melanie tried to bring casualness in her tone, and Valerie thought she had swallowed a bitter pill after hearing Marissa’s name.
“Oh please,” Val raised her hand to make the woman stop, “You know how she was. She was always after my things. If jealousy had a face,” she took the last sip of the shitty coffee and thanked God that she managed it without gagging.

“I don’t think so,” there was a wicked smile on Melanie’s lips, “Marissa was more mature among you two. The girl with a good IQ. If I was half as genius as her, I would be ruling the world. Ha-ha,”
Valerie didn’t remark. She wanted to break Melanie’s face but again she needed to work on her attitude.
At least until she would get back her property, she couldn’t afford more enemies.
“I can’t say much, Melanie,” she said with a sad smile, “After all … she is my sister. I wish I could convince my parents to favor me. They are completely under her thumb now.”
They got quiet when a waitress placed a sandwich and a latte for Melanie. She offered the odd-looking sandwich to Valerie, but Valerie declined politely.
“You should talk to your parents then,” Melanie tried to speak with a full mouth.
“I did. Parents nowadays love their kids’ wealth,” she confided in her and waved the same waitress to bring the bill.
She needed to get out of here.
“So, if your parents love wealth, convince them, Val. Tell them that you want to make their life easier. Apologize if you have to. To be very frank, this kind of property is every girl’s dream…” Melanie batted her lashes.
The woman was telling her how she dreamed of traveling and spending on luxuries. She might be following Valerie on social media quite closely.
“Thanks for the advice, Melanie. I appreciate your suggestion.”
Melanie couldn’t say anything because she had pushed the rest of the sandwich into her mouth, “Beg them if you have to,” she washed down the sandwich with a large sip of latte, “Once they are with you, you’ll get back your property.”
Valerie’s eyes were on Melanie’s funny face who was now uncomfortable due to the chicken piece stuck in her teeth.
But her suggestion did have weight. Val should talk to her parents again. They might be mad at her because she didn’t care for them.
Now she wanted to assure them that she would do whatever they asked of her. After all, she was their golden girl. A sarcastic smirk appeared on her face.

“I will never speak against Marissa, Val!” her mom glared just like she used to do when Marissa used to call her out on her unfair treatment.
Though it happened rarely still Marissa did try to take a stand for herself.
“I’m not Marissa, mom,” Valerie spoke in frustration, “Stop intimidating me!”
“You can never be Marissa, Val. And we’re never giving any statements against her!” Valerie wished she could kill her mom. What had gotten into her parents?
Her dad was sitting quietly on the chair, “Dad. Say something!”
As always, his face was hidden behind a newspaper. He never gave a damn about anything except money.
What had changed now? She was willing to give them a big share.
“I’m with your mom on that, Val. We aren’t making any statements. We don’t want to get caught up in any trouble that involves the police. Plus, Nina gave us money to keep our mouths shut.”
Valerie puffed out her cheeks in frustration. Her once understanding parents, weren’t understanding it anymore.
“You never told me this,” she muttered and plopped on the sofa, “I am all alone now. I’m on my own.”
“At least you have jewelry that you can sell for cash. Marissa had nothing,” her mom held her husband’s hand, “See… where she is now. A popular entrepreneur of Kanderton!” she said with a proud grin.
“Mom! Look!” she could see the bored expressions on their faces, but she couldn’t quit trying. They were her only hope, “I’m your daughter. Nina… she can’t dictate anything. She must be scared and taking advantage of our situation. I swear, Mom…” she moved ahead and crouched near her parents’ chairs, “I swear this time you’ll get the cut in the property. And I promise I won’t forget Marissa too.”
Her parents turned their heads to look at each other. There was hesitation on their faces, and this was where she could score a goal.
“I’m sorry. Ok? I realize it now. You both needed me, and I wasn’t there for you,” she held their hands, “if you had told me once, I would have tried. I just want one more chance. I promise… I’ll make it up to you.”
Her father exhaled a long sigh and started rolling the newspaper, “The thing is…” he chewed his inner cheek, “We can’t.”
Before Valerie could speak, her father didn’t let her, “It’s not only about Nina, Val. This time Nina and Marissa are together. They are too strong. We can’t take risks.”
Valerie looked at her mom’s face when she cleared her throat, “Moreover, this time Marissa’s kids are also involved, Val. She forgave us the first time. As a mom, she won’t spare us.”
Valerie was now getting tired of hearing Marissa’s name repeatedly. It felt like she was reading a book by the name of ‘Amazing Stories of Marissa!’
“So, you won’t help me this time?” she asked them with a little hope in her eyes and then was disappointed when they shook their heads.
“We are sorry!” her mom uttered in a soft tone; her eyes filled with regret.
“Yeah, child,” her father said, “We’re sorry.”
“Well!” Val revealed a sinister smile. She had never given up in her life and she wouldn’t give up this time either, “I’m sorry too!”
