Chapter 296: 296- Mom! Dad!
When Valerie landed at Kanderton airport, she took a cab to the palace. She was expecting the same arguments with the guards but thankfully this time she was ushered to Nina’s not-so-big study room without any hassle.
This room was of course smaller than the main study where will-reading was carried out but seemed enough for Nina.
“Ma’am,” the maid placed the bottle of sparkling water on the table along with a glass and Valerie felt jealous.
Marissa was now living her dream.
“Where is Marissa?” she asked the woman with a smile.
“In the office,” she replied and left the room.
Marissa was in the office? To do what?
She relaxed back in the chair while waiting for Nina.
“So, you’re back, Valerie!” Valerie stayed in the same position when Nina approached her, “I told you not to try to meet me again.”
“I know, Nina. But… you’re the only one who can solve my problems. You need to do something, Nina.”
For the first time in her life, she was pleading with someone. Gosh! She always hated begging.
Nina took the opposite chair behind her desk and started tapping her fingers slightly on the armrest, with a bemused smirk on her face.
“Nina. Please,” she tried again. She could feel her voice cracking slightly, though she tried to maintain her composure, “Rafael was your son, I understand. But you also need to understand that he was my husband. I loved him,” Valerie placed her hand on her chest, “You know how much Rafael meant to me,”
Nina didn’t remark and kept looking at her. For an instant, Valerie felt insulted. It felt like Nina was watching a rom-com and was enjoying the show. The old bitch was enjoying her pain.
“Look!” Valerie bit her lower lip, “I- I just need a small cut of his estate. I -I’ve nothing left… Nina… you need to do something,”
Nina chuckled softly. She leaned forward, her eyes narrowing with mock sympathy, “Aww, Valerie darling!” she said, her voice dripping in sarcasm, “Rafael’s estate?” she threw back her head and laughed loudly, “You are wasting your time, dear.”
“Wh-Why?” this time genuine tears slipped Valerie’s cheeks. This wasn’t the same Nina who used to favor her, “What went wrong between us? We had differences, but I always thought we genuinely liked each other.”
Instead of answering her, Nina kept staring at her face. There was something extremely wrong in her expressions.
“Rafael’s property isn’t for you, Valerie,” Nina shrugged casually, “It’s for Rafael’s widow. Marissa is the one who deserves it.”
“Are you saying this because of their kids?” Nina’s facial features hardened in the blink of an eye. The mention of her grandkids had perked up her ears.
“No need to bring them into our discussion, Val!” she warned.
“But I’m not here to take their rightful share, Nina. Let them enjoy their father’s wealth. I just want a little portion for myself. Please do something about it.”
Valerie swallowed hard, her knees were buckling under her. She wanted to fall at Nina’s feet, to beg, to plead.
She wanted to do whatever it took to get back in her good books. She was beautiful, smart and the dream of every guy. The only thing that seemed to be lacking in her was motherhood.
She wished she had tried harder. If she knew, the presence of kids could change Nina so much, she could have gone to any length to achieve that.
She would have slept with another man to birth a Sinclair heir. Gripping Nina’s desk, she looked at the older woman’s face which was now devoid of any emotion, “I was there for him, Nina. You know I was. You saw me trying so hard to keep him happy. I need this, Nina, and you’re my only hope.”
Nina raised a brow, “You think begging will change anything?”
She stood up, her tone colder now, “Forget about it, Valerie. It’s not happening. Marissa earned her place. You… you’re just a distant memory in this game. And to be very frank,” Nina placed her palms on the desk and leaned ahead, “Go home and start earning…” she chuckled, “or maybe find another rich man. Ha-ha.”
Valerie didn’t like the joke. Nina was making fun of her condition.

Her heart sank, she looked up with her glassy eyes. Nina’s gaze never wavered, as they both stared at each other in silence.
Valerie got up from the chair, her chest was tight in disappointment. With trembling hands, she heaved a long sigh.
So, this was final. From now onwards she was on her own.
She cast one last, pleading glance at Nina, hoping for even a flicker of compassion.
But Nina’s cold smirk was back on her face. Resigned, Valerie turned on her heel, with slumped shoulders.
Nina used her to her advantage.
Still, she wanted Nina to stop her or to call her back but no.
As Valerie reached the door she heard Nina’s phone ringing. She paused, glancing back just in time to see Nina’s expression change. The smirk that was there for Valerie vanished in the blink of an eye and in its place was an unsettling blankness.
Nina’s hand trembled on the phone, holding it tightly.
Valerie frowned and looked at her in concern, “Nina! Is everything alright?”
Instead of answering her, Nina rushed to the small study corner of the room and turned on the TV.
The news blared from the screen. A reporter was speaking in a loud voice about a murder attempt in Sangua city.
Valerie’s ears perked up.
The names sounded familiar, and the shock didn’t let her mind register about it.
She blinked stepping closer as the names at last registered. Her heart skipped a beat, and the blood drained from her face.
A cold chill ran down her spine.
“Mom! Dad!” her voice was barely above a whisper as she staggered back, “Someone tried to …”
She held her head and let her body drop down on the floor, “Oh God! How could they! Someone tried to kill them! They are dead?”
Her hand shot up to reach the nearest surface to hold on to something. Nina was silently staring at the screen.
Her own face was frozen in disbelief.
