Chapter 297: 297- Betrayal.

Swallowing her saliva, Nina turned her face a little and found Valerie sitting on the floor, “Valerie!”

She rushed to her and then looked for water around. She rang the bell of her small study and waited for the helper to arrive.

“Are you alright? Stay with me!” Valerie’s eyes were glued to the screen. Before coming here, she was asking them to be her witnesses. And now someone tried to kill them cold-heartedly.

According to the news, they were immediately taken to the hospital.

Valerie’s eyes fluttered open as someone slapped her cheeks lightly. Blinking, she saw Nina leaning over her, gently spraying water on her face.

Her head throbbed and for a moment, everything felt hazy. She frowned, looking around in confusion, trying to piece together where she was.

Nina’s lips were moving, but Valerie couldn’t make out what she was saying. Her mind was still foggy, the words somehow sounded muffled.

Nina handed her a glass of water, guiding it into her hand.

Valerie grabbed it and drank greedily, finishing it in one long gulp. The cool water erased the tension in her chest, but her heart still throbbed with unease.

“Easy there!” Nina said softly, her voice unexpectedly gentle, “Just relax. Ok?”

“What happened?” Valerie looked up at the ceiling. Gosh. Her head hurt!

She tried to sit up, but her body felt heavy as if someone had placed a heavy rock inside her head and her chest.

Using all her might, she tried to push herself up from the floor, her legs were weak beneath her as she tried to stand up.

She needed to leave. Listening to her parents’ news was a shock for her.

“Where do you think you are going?” Nina placed a firm hand on her shoulder, “Don’t rush. You’re in no condition to walk yet.”

Nina was again back to her soft side. The same tone she used to have when Valerie started dating Rafael.

“I need to go. Th-they need me,” she swiped her tongue over her dry lips though she did have water a few moments back.

“You just landed here and now you’re ready to go back to Sangua. You can’t do anything for your parents in this condition,” Nina made her sit on a nearby chair, “Have you eaten anything since morning?”

Valerie tried to think. Yes, she did take a small salad bowl at the airport but later she was so consumed by Nina’s thoughts that she couldn’t eat or drink anything.

When Nina didn’t get any answer, she went to her intercom to order food, “They are bringing lunch. Let’s eat something then we can take a little rest.”

Valerie blinked. Was Nina offering her to take a rest in the palace?

Strange!

Is she the same woman who dismissed me earlier? Now what made her go softie like this?

Maybe it was the news about her parents that changed Nina and melted away her hardness. If that was the case then she guessed, the credit again went to her parents.

Thanks, Mom! And Dad! Maybe this news had transformed Nina back. If that was the case, she was more than happy. For now, she needed to act like a poor suffering girl to score points.

Valerie smirked secretly. It seemed like fate would be again in her favor very soon!

Valerie tried to suppress the burp that was about to escape her lips. That was too unladylike.

She could never do that in public. Nina was gently urging her to eat more.

“I’ve asked the maid to prepare a guest room for you. Once you’re well rested, we will go to Sangua together.”

Valerie was happy. Nina might consider giving a percentage of the property. Something was better than being empty-handed.

The plates were still scattered on the table and Valerie didn’t notice at first how odd Nina was acting.

She was making faces as if she was constipated.

“If you want, you can go to the bathroom,” she said jokingly and started rubbing her stomach. The intercom rang and Nina shot up like a bolt to attend it.

Why is she acting like that? Valerie thought to herself.

Nina’s voice was unusually calm, “Yes. Hmm. You can come… hmmm … it’s still here.”

Valerie again had that uncomfortable feeling when Nina hung up the receiver, her gaze got fixed on Valerie’s face.

She wanted to ask Nina, what was going on when the door to the study room, was opened. Two uniformed officials stepped in, their faces were serious. One of them spoke in a stern and professional tone, “Ms. Valerie Aaron?”

Valerie got up, not sure what was happening, “Yes? It’s me.”

“You are under arrest for the attempted murder of your parents.”

Valerie’s eyes widened in shock, and her heart slammed against her chest, as she tried to back away, “What? B-but … no!” she protested, trying to pull free as one of them tried holding her wrist to cuff her.

The other officer held up his hand to stop her from moving further, “You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say, can and will be used against you in the court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford one, one will be appointed to you.”

Valerie stood frozen in shock, watching in disbelief as they buckled the cold metal around her wrists.

She glanced desperately at Nina, asking silently for her help, but Nina stood there with an unreadable expression.

One of the officers turned to Nina with an easygoing smile, “Thank you, Mrs. Sinclair, for informing us and making sure she stayed long enough for us to arrive.”

Valerie’s eyes snapped up at that. Did Nina make her stay longer? She was waiting for the police to arrive?

She called the police on her?

“Just doing what’s right, officer,” Nina said softly, her eyes never leaving Valerie’s stunned face.

“You! Arrogant! Manipulative! Bitch!” Valerie hissed as she was ushered out of the study room.

She couldn’t believe this was happening to her. Couldn’t believe that Nina would betray her like this.
