Chapter 298: 298- Slap him!
For the first time, Valerie felt vulnerable. She was shaking like a scared toddler who wanted his parents to be with him.
Her heart raced when the police led her towards the car. Though the streets were almost empty, there was this fear that someone might see her or might recognize her.
She walked with her head slightly bent, her hair falling around her face like a shield. As she reached the squad car, she hesitated for a moment, glancing around, and then quickly ducked inside.
The police officer who closed the door after she was seated, could feel her stiffness. Valerie closed her eyes as the door slammed shut, her fingers were trembling in the cuffs.
When she heard the hum of the engine, she sank deeper into the seat, praying that nobody saw her like this.
Thankfully, it was a sudden arrest so the media couldn’t make it there.
Nina Sinclair. How could you!
She thought with bitterness. Why did she forget that Nina could be anything but sincere?
By the time, the car pulled into the station’s lot, she was trembling. They escorted her inside while talking to each other. Some of them were even cracking jokes with each other and Valerie hated everything about them.
This must be usual for them, but she was having a hard time accepting it.
Everything felt surreal, like a bad dream and she badly wanted to wake up from it.
She looked at the officer who was walking beside her through the dim hallway, “S-sir…” she tried to wet her dry lips, “there is some misunderstanding. I’m innocent.”
The officer kept walking as if he was made of stone, “You’re making a mistake, ma’am,” he turned his face to look at her, “Please stay silent.”
“I – I didn’t do anything… believe me, please,” desperation was evident in her voice.
The man’s face remained stony, offering no sympathy, “Just sit down and stay quiet,” he said flatly, motioning her towards a bench in the waiting area.
Valerie felt a desperate knot, twist in her chest, “I… I swear… I haven’t done anything wrong,” she pleaded again, not realizing that her voice was rising with anxiety, “Y-you have got it all wrong, sir.”
The officer who was giving some instructions to the other officer, his patience seemed to snap. He turned to her sharply, his eyes narrowing, “Shut up! You are making this harder for yourself. One more word and you’ll regret it.”
Valerie who wanted to say more…
No! She wanted to scream!
She wanted to hold the collar of the man.
She wanted to kill Nina…
Her words died in her throat, and she slumped down on the bench. Tears had started stinging her eyes.
It was very rare when she genuinely cried. Most of the time, it used to be crocodile tears. She was so sure of her acting skills that if she wasn’t Rafael’s wife, she would have landed herself in Hollywood.
She wasn’t used to that stinging and today it was killing her. Marissa and Nina would never come to help her.
Marissa would make sure that she was hanged to death.
Oh, God! What have I gotten myself into?
It was silly of me to approach Nina.
The Police station felt colder now. She swallowed hard, trying to keep her composure but all she could feel was suffocation.
What to do? Who should I call for help?

And then her eyes blinked!
Ethan?
***
The same rude officer was taking her to the holding cell. She was walking with a heavy heart but there was a glimmer of hope. She wished she could reach Ethan.
She wasn’t a fool and had somewhat guessed that he must be involved with Nina’s assistant. For the last few days, during her hotel stay, he didn’t try to approach her for intimacy.
She could hear the distant murmur of voices and while moving through that fog, she wished that Rafael was alive. If he was, he might have stopped it.
She came back from her dreamy state when they stopped in front of a cold metal door and the officer slid it open with a creak.
When Valerie stepped in, she wanted to vomit. Inside the small suffocating cell, there was nothing but a narrow, two-tiered cot and a toilet in the corner. The stale air inside smelled of damp concrete and poop.
She turned to the officer and tried to control her trembling voice, “Sir… I…”
“Yeah, yeah. I know you’re innocent. Now get inside, lady. I have other duties to do.”
“N…No… I… I need to make a call,” he was now taking off her cuffs, “C-can I, sir?” she needed to reach out to Ethan for help. He was her only hope.
The officer smirked, leaning back against the doorframe with a look of amusement, “You think it’s a five-star hotel?” he sneered, “Maybe you also want room services, your highness?” He bowed to her with a mocking smile as if she was royalty.
Valerie’s face flushed with embarrassment, but she needed to control her frustration for now, “I … just need to talk to someone…” her voice was quieter this time.
Thankfully the officer’s smirk faded, he straightened up and looked at her with a serious expression, “Look!” he said crossing his arms, “You ARE allowed to make a call. But not until twenty-four hours after your arrest. So, for now, get comfortable.”
He gave a short nod to the cot behind her. The condescension was back on his face, “We will let you contact a lawyer in that time frame.”
Valerie blinked in disbelief, “Twenty-four hours?”
My God! I might die from this horrible stench.
“B-but … sir…”
He cut her off with a raised hand, “Those are the rules, and everyone is supposed to follow them, my queen!” he was again cynical by the end of it.
Valerie wanted to slap across his face.
Soon!
She promised herself.
Soon! Once I’m out of here, the first thing I’ll do is to slap this bas*tard!
She promised herself and at last, found her first smile.
