Chapter 299: 299- Ghost
When the metal door was slammed shut behind her, the clanking sound kept ringing in her ears. Watching reality-based crime shows used to be fun for her.
Not anymore!
Now she felt like criminals somehow decided to take revenge on her.
Heaving a sigh, she walked ahead and sank to the edge of the bed, gripping the rough blanket as everything that just happened to her started sinking in.
She was in a cell. She was arrested.
Nina’s betrayal.
Marissa’s unexpected change of fate.
Oh, God! She kneeled on the floor and joined her palms, closing her eyes, “Please make it all disappear,” she murmured, “Please, God! Send someone to save me. If you are there… if you exist, please send help.”
She was so engrossed in her prayer that she didn’t realize initially that her bunk was shaking. When she did realize, her eyes were wide. The creaking sound was there, and her heart was thumping in her chest.
She tried to hear it carefully, thinking she must be imagining it. But no. It was DEFINITELY, there.
Is it normal? Does God respond so quickly to one’s prayers?
Her heart thudded loudly in her chest as she slowly lifted her head, her prayer dying on her lips. The bunk beside was indeed trembling.
Shaking!
As if someone was either above it or under it.
Slowly she was getting the creepy vibes from the room. What should she do? Call the officer on duty?
But he was annoyed by her. He would think she had gone crazy.
This was getting spookier!
“Wh- What?” she whispered, her voice barely audible, “Wh-who…” she swallowed her saliva, “Who is th-there?”
The shaking had grown more violent, and the eerie sound continued.
Placing her palms on the floor, she slowly got up and scrambled backwards, pressing herself to the wall.
The bunk was now shaking more violently.
What if it’s an earthquake? She thought for a moment. Fear was pulsing through her veins. She was finding it difficult to breathe, her limbs had turned weaker due to the panic.
Suddenly without warning, a figure lunged at her out of nowhere.
Her heart leaped into her throat. Throwing up her arms, in defense she screamed at the top of her lungs.

Marissa was silently moving around the office to put her stuff in the cartons. Today was her last day at MSin.
Though she did come here after Rafael’s death but today was the final packing for her stuff. She was no more planning to come here anymore.
She had to gather a lot of courage to come here and get her things sorted. The new office should be prepared for the new boss.
Nina was supposed to take over until the triplets would be of the age to carry on their father’s business.

Her belongings were scattered over Rafael’s desk, and he never minded the clutter. Her chart papers, her laptop, her planners.
Everything needed to go into the cartons.
Her eyes went to the PlayStation that he installed for her.
We will play games together. He had told her, and she had laughed.
Really? And what about your work at the office?
Ah! Who wants to work when a man has a beautiful wife working alongside him? Now come here, strawberry!
He had asked her sternly and she had kept laughing.
As she was placing the last file in the carton, her hand brushed over his seat. She went still.
Sit here. The seat belongs to you. This office belongs to you.
He had been giving her subtle hints that she was the owner. And she was foolishly waiting for him to tell her that his heart also belonged to her.
“Well!” she whispered to his seat, “Mr. Sinclair. All I wanted was you. I’m not interested in this seat.”
Every memory came flooding back to her, “I’m missing you, handsome!”
She didn’t notice when Dean entered the room until he spoke, his voice broke the silence, “Marissa! Coffee?”
Marissa looked up and blinked. Her lips pressed into a thin line when she shook her head slightly.
Dean paused, watching her closely. He hesitated for a moment and then tried again. This time his tone might be lighter, but it was slightly coaxing, “How about some croissants?” he asked bringing some childlike excitement into his voice, “Butter ones?” he wiggled his brows.
She gave him a faint smile but shook her head again, knowing full well that he was trying to distract her.
He could see the swelling and heaviness in her eyes. Like Sophie, he had been there to console her, to take her mind off the present.
But they all knew that she was the only one who had to face all this and come out of it.
“I just need to finish packing,” she said quietly and turned away to tape her carton. The sooner she left, the better it was.
She needed to move on from all of this.
With Rafael gone, there was nothing here for her.
“Dean!” she called his name when saw him taping another giant box.
“Hmm?” he asked busily.
“D-do you think he’ll come back?” she felt his body go rigid, “I mean… they couldn’t find his body.”
Dean exhaled a long and tired breath. Ever since Rafael’s death news, she used to ask him this question daily, at least once a day.
“No, sweetheart!” he wished he could make it easier for her, “Even if they hadn’t found the body but the amount of blood that was found at Silvercrest sight was abnormally high.”
He tried explaining to her. Her heart was still not convinced that Delinda would attempt to do any such thing.
Dean wanted to take her mind off Rafael.
“By the way, where is your friend?” Marissa smiled at his question. She was aware of what he was trying to do.
“Where she should be. In Joseph’s office,” Dean chuckled and was about to say something when the door opened suddenly, and Sophie’s pale face showed up in the doorway.
“Mar! It’s about Val and your parents. Val tried to kill them. The police arrested her, and your parents were admitted to the hospital in critical condition.”
