Chapter 300: 300- I’m Sorry!
The crisp air of Sangua City hit her with a wave of nostalgia. It had been such a long time since she returned to the city.
After five long years, she was back here.
The girl who left the place with the promise to never return, at last, was here. She had never imagined that she would be coming back here due to her parents.
That too in such critical condition.
Sitting in the car, she looked outside the window seeing everything passing into a blur. She had decided to go to the hospital straight from the airport.
“You really didn’t have to come with me,” she said softly, though she was grateful that he accompanied her.
“Now don’t be a fool,” Dean shook his head, “Why would I let you go alone?”
Marissa glanced at him, her lips pressing into a thin line, “I’m a big girl, Dean. Or are you planning to be my twenty-four-seven chaperon?”
Dean was aware, she was trying to crack the joke but internally she was too upset to even smile.
When Sophie gave her the news, she instantly decided to come here, and Dean hadn’t left her side ever since.
Her shoulders dropped slightly and then she gave him a subtle nod. Obviously, this wasn’t meant to be a solo journey, and she was thankful that Dean decided to be with her on the spot.
Even Sophie was relieved. Marissa was sure that if Dean wasn’t with her then Sophie would have accompanied her.
“Chaperon or not,” she saw Dean holding her hand, “but friends are meant to stick together.”
Her lips curled up into a small smile and she squeezed his hand before leaving it. She had never thought of meeting her parents after their betrayal but then she couldn’t dump them.
She was still shocked that Valerie could do any such thing. But after all, she was Valerie, and one could expect anything from her.
“You, ok?” Dean asked, his voice was filled with concern.
She shrugged while looking outside, “I don’t know,” she whispered, “It’s been so long, I’m not sure why I decided to come here.”
“Whenever you decide to go back, just let me know. And please remember, “he looked at her solemnly, “You don’t have to do this alone.”
Marissa gave him a slight nod, but her mind was elsewhere. Every worst scenario was running through her head.
After Rafael’s death, everything became uncertain for her. In nervousness, her fingers were fidgeting with the hem of her jacket, “I don’t know what to expect. Even if they were conscious, what would I talk to them about?”
Dean kept glancing outside the window while talking to her, “Don’t worry about it. Just a little more patience. We’ll be there soon.”

Wearing a hospital gown, a cap, and a mask, she was taken inside the ICU where her mother was admitted. Several tubes were attached to her, and the beeping of the machines filled the room.
Her heart sank a little when her eyes landed on the monitor. There were erratic lines on the monitor. Though she wasn’t a medical-related woman, she could tell that something was extremely wrong.
She went closer to her bed and whispered near her ear, “Mom!”
She lay still in the bed.
Are you out of your mind? Valerie is Rafael’s wife. Now take your shameless ass out of here. And stop eyeing your sister’s husband.
Her own mother called her a liar. A mom was supposed to keep her kids safe at all costs, what this woman did to her was unforgivable.
Now she was lying here in this bed, with life drained out of her body. There was only a frail shell of the woman left behind.

A doctor entered the room, holding a chart in his hands. Marissa saw the grimness on his face and knew without him saying that there was bad news.
“Mrs. Sinclair,” he began in a calm voice, “She is in critical condition. As you can see her vitals are unstable,” he pointed towards the monitor, “She is currently in a deep coma. The attack was done with the knife that tore her lung covering, making a hole there. We have repaired it… almost!”
Marissa’s mind was already juggling with so much, “What does that mean? Hole? Is it repaired now? Will she open her eyes?”
The doctor looked down at the chart, “Her brain activity is minimal. There are several abnormalities. We haven’t found any response yet. Her body is functioning on life support. The chances of regaining consciousness are very slim, ma’am.”
Though she didn’t have much love for her mom, still the words hit her like a blow to her chest. She gripped the edge of the bed for support.
Blinking away the tears, she kept hearing the details from the doctor, trying to hold on to the little hope he was giving her.
“Don’t worry, Mrs. Sinclair,” the doctor at last attached the chart to the patient’s bed, “miracles do happen in this world.”
But not for me, doctor. My miracle left the world.
She thought to herself.
After a long moment of silence she turned to the doctor, “Can I see my dad? Where is he?”
He shook his head, “I’m afraid that’s not possible for the moment. Your father is in an even more critical condition. He is undergoing intensive surgery. His intestines…” he didn’t speak further, and Marissa felt the floor slipping under her feet.
He placed a hand on her arm, “I know this is difficult. We are doing everything in our power to stabilize him.”
Oh, Rafael. I wish you were here!
Can I ever forget about you, sweetheart?
She nodded, swallowing hard, “Please… keep me updated.”
When she came out of the ICU, Dean was waiting for her right outside, “Hey!” he opened his arms, letting her hug him gently.
He felt her shaking shoulders and let her cry. But no this wasn’t enough.
After a few minutes, the same doctor came to her in haste, “Mrs. Sinclair?”
She raised her wet face from Dean’s chest, “Yes?” she wiped her face.
“Can you sit on this chair?” he pointed to a corner, but Marissa shook her head with a sinking heart, “I’m sorry, Mrs. Sinclair. Your father is no more!”
Thankfully Dean was holding her otherwise she could have fallen on the floor.
