Chapter 308: 308- Shame On You!
Alex and Ariel were again arguing about something while Abi was busy telling Georgie about her class fellows.
“Some of the girls in my class are so rude,” she told the boy who Marissa realized was an excellent listener. Nina was just enjoying the noise around her.
The smile on her face told it all.
“Someone his age rarely shows so much maturity,” Marissa said, her eyes lingering on the boy for a few moments. He might be Delinda’s son but was way ahead of his age.
“Staying quiet doesn’t mean he has gotten mature,” Nina picked up a cucumber stick and started nibbling on it, “He is just like the other kids of his age,” Marissa didn’t know how to bring up the subject with Nina.
Was it even worth it?
“He only listens to Abigail,” Nina remarked taking a spoonful of yogurt, “He keeps her safe from bullying. Helps her with her homework. And for some odd reason, he and Alex don’t see eye to eye.”
This was something new for Marissa. She always thought Georgie was a peaceful, calming soul. But she wasn’t expecting that he and Alex had differences.
After dinner, Emily took the kids to bed and Marissa asked a maid to serve them tea before retiring to bed.
“Aren’t you spending the night outside?” Marissa asked Nina, as she made herself comfortable in the living room seat. Nina sat opposite to her and shook her head.
“Not tonight! You just spill what you want to talk about,” Marissa was taken aback by her bluntness.
“Who said anything about talking?” she tried to laugh but failed miserably.
“Your face. It says it all,” Nina folded her legs under her, “Now shoot it. What is it?”
Marissa clasped her hands together looking for words, “I … I know that it’s been a year since…”
“Since Rafael is gone? Yeah, tell me about it,” Nina smiled sadly, and Marissa found it harder to communicate whatever was on her mind.
“Did you meet Rafael? After the event?” Marissa wished she was holding a glass of water because her throat suddenly felt parched.
For a moment…
Just for a moment, she saw panic flashing in Nina’s eyes. But it was so quick that Marissa thought she must be imagining it.
“Sorry?” Nina’s voice trembled a little.
“I’m asking, did you meet Rafael after the event?” Before Nina could answer, a servant served them tea and left the room quietly.
“Why are you asking this, Marissa?” Nina didn’t even look at the cup, “Is there something wrong?”
“Wrong? For me? Yes,” she picked up her cup because she liked her tea on a warmer side.
Nina sighed deeply before meeting her eyes, “Yes. I did meet him after the event. Why?” She asked in a whisper, with a smile that didn’t reach her eyes.
“You never told me about the meeting, Nina?” Nina could only cock up a brow.
“Tell you what? That I talked to my own son, Marissa?” Nina asked her softly. Before Marissa could utter another word, she spoke again, “How many times do you inform someone when you talk to Alex or Abi or Ariel?”
“Th-that’s not what I wanted to know, Nina,” this was going in the wrong direction.
“Then what do you want to know? Help me, understand,”
Marissa got quiet after that. She couldn’t decide if Nina was being defensive or cautious.
“You two were shouting, Nina… so …” she raised her shoulder, “So I thought maybe… you two had a fight…”

“So?” Nina had forgotten about her tea, “Let your kids reach teenage, and see how they will change. How they will argue.”
Marissa got quiet after that. She could feel Nina’s eyes piercing through her soul.
“Wait a bloody minute!” Nina got up slowly, “Y-you th-think that I…” She placed her index finger on her chest, “I killed him,” her voice had dropped to a whisper, “I killed my son?”
Placing her teacup on the table, Marissa also got up from her seat, “I … I didn’t mean that, Nina.”
Oh, this guilt. She wanted to know exactly that. And Nina knew it.
Nina was panting now as if she ran miles to reach there, “And who told you that. Geena?” she asked her confidently, “I knew she would try this stunt, someday.”
She muttered more to herself, “Geena is my former employee, Marissa. Do you understand?” Nina kept her voice controlled and her anger in check.
“Nina … I …” Marissa’s voice trailed. Geena name was meant to remain a secret.
“Don’t!” Nina raised her hand, “You believed Geena? Marissa, if someday, Kate comes to me and complains about you, you tell me what should I do? Listen to her or get your back and give her a shut-up call?”
Marissa closed her eyes and started shaking her head, “Nina… I think… it sounded out of proportion…”
“No, Marissa,” she smiled gently, “it wasn’t out of proportion. It sounded, just like you intended it to be.”
Marissa was crossing and uncrossing her arms frequently.
“I know I did wrong in the past,” Nina rolled her lips between her teeth, “I’m aware of the pain, I caused you. No apology can bring back the past and I wish I could turn back time and get another chance when those kids could have all the relatives in their lives, and you would have all the support from us. Yes, I never acknowledged Rafael’s feelings for you. But…” Out of nowhere, tears started sliding down her face, “I didn’t kill him, Marissa,” she said in a teary voice, “I was his mom. I raised him. Why would I do that?”
A chuckle escaped her lips that lacked humor, “Yes. We argued. We both shouted that night… but… if I knew he would never return, I…” she hiccupped, “I would have killed myself. Instead of dying this slow death every day, again and again.”
Marissa shifted on her feet and started biting her lips in nervousness. She regretted it. What a fool she was!
This woman was here to help her out with the kids. She was the main reason; the kids came out of the trauma more quickly. How could she think about her like this?
“Nina… I’m sorry… Geena…”
“Ah, yes. Geena. You are paying her semester fees, so you thought that it was OK to trust her. Right?” Nina smirked, “Shame on you, Marissa…”
Nina pursed her lips tightly, “Shame on you for even thinking that I… I killed…”
She couldn’t finish it and spun around to leave the living room. Marissa didn’t try to stop her.
What a fool she was!
Fu*ck you, Geena!
