Chapter 323: 323- Beauty Or Brains?
(10 + years ago)
[When Rafael, Valerie, and Marissa never met)
Eighteen-year-old Valerie checked her hair for the umpteenth time in the rearview mirror while waiting for Marissa.
Two years back she became a school dropout and started dating rich guys. They were usually after her beauty and her tight pu*ssy but Valerie tried to keep herself safe for the one who could pay her the best price.
Leaving school didn’t mean that she had to become Marissa’s driver but today her father requested her to pick Marissa up from this ice cream joint where she was meeting her friends.
Marissa hardly attended such get-togethers so this time when she requested their father to provide her pick and drop, her father didn’t take a moment to say yes.
Now here, Valerie was waiting for her younger sister to come out of the ice cream parlor so they could head back home. After that Valerie had to reach the salon for her manicure pedicure appointment.
“How long is she going to take?” Valerie glanced at her watch while muttering to herself.
Her parents knew she never liked running these errands, but today, with her father tied up, she had to do this task.
She wanted to honk the horn, but the ice cream place was in an elite area, and nobody liked a noisy vehicle in the neighborhood.
With a bored look, she watched outside and found a handsome guy standing in the parking lot, leaning against his car.
“Hmm. You must be here to pick up your sibling. Right, honey?” Glancing at her reflection again in the rearview mirror she gave her hair a subtle shake and ran her fingers through it a few times.
She wanted to leave a wild and bold impression on the guy.
She got down and headed towards him. Leaning against his luxury car, he was holding a disposable glass of fresh juice.
“Hi!” she approached him with a smile. He got a little confused and looked behind him, “I’m talking to you,” She giggled.
Usually, boys couldn’t believe that they were visible to her. Nothing new though!
“Hey. Hi!” he hurriedly sucked the rest of the drink from his glass and then tossed it inside the car.
“I’m Valerie. Are you here to pick up your… umm… your sibling?” she asked him with a pleasant smile plastered to her face.
“H…How do you know?” he asked with a note of surprise, glancing at the closed door of the ice cream parlor, “I think they are here to discuss some projects especially the ones that involve surveys… you know?” he shrugged and clicked his tongue.
“I know…” Valerie also looked behind her if Marissa was out yet because now she wasn’t getting bored.
Marissa should come after a few minutes. She told herself.
Now she was no more hasty about it.
“I’m Jason,” Jason offered his hand for the handshake. Valerie could see it in his eyes that he liked her.
I know, honey. Guys simply can’t resist me. She thought with an inner smirk.
His clothes seemed expensive. There was a thick gold chain around his neck. The car was also top-notch.
No one in her acquaintances owned any such car.
“Beautiful car!” she blurted before she could stop herself.
“Thanks. It’s my friend’s,” Jason told her with a smirk, “My car is at the auto shop, so I had to…” he trailed off when the door to the passenger seat opened and another guy came out.

Valerie suddenly took a step back, not expecting that someone else was sitting in the car.
“How long would it take?” The new guy took off his glasses and eyed Jason. Valerie thought she had died and gone to heaven.
Never in her life, she had seen such a gorgeous man. For some reason, she was getting breathless.
Knocked out by his looks!
“My friend. Rafael Sinclair. The owner of this car,” Jason told Valerie and Valerie’s ears perked up when she heard the surname Sinclair.
Sinclair Industries?
Oh God! She was getting the best shot of her life, but she couldn’t make it look too obvious.
“Hi, Rafael!” she greeted him, but he got busy on his phone after a subtle nod. Her eyes went back to Jason and there was a knowing look on his face.
“He rarely talks!” he informed her, and Valerie giggled, placing her hand on Jason’s arm. If she wanted to approach this rich stud, then she had to develop a friendship with Jason.
Jason placed his phone in his pants pocket, “I think I should get inside and remind the youngsters that they can’t waste our time anymore.”
Valerie watched him going inside and her eyes went back to Rafael’s face. Those raw manly vibes he was giving.
That careless attitude was a telltale sign that he was loaded with money. This was the golden chance, and Valerie didn’t want to waste it.
“Umm. Rafael. I need help.” She tried to break the ice.
“Hmm.”
“I’ve been searching for a job for some time. Can you ask someone to …” She paused when found him still busy on his phone. She wanted to tell him that easy money wasn’t important, but the hard work was.
The irony was whenever Marissa used to tell her the same thing, they always ended up in an argument.
Everyone in Sangua knew who the Sinclairs were.
“I will be highly grateful, Rafael,” she brought a little pleading into her voice. Rafael just nodded; his eyes still glued to his phone screen.
So, there are no manners taught in the elite class? She thought.
“I’m a college dropout,” she informed him, and he momentarily peeled his eyes off the screen, “and I know a job isn’t easy nowadays… but I promise, I’ll learn,” she immediately said, “I’m a quick learner.”
Rafael who probably thought that she wasn’t sparing him anytime soon, at last, looked up.
“Alright, girl. I’ll see what I can do.”
Girl? Didn’t I tell him, my name?
“Yeah?” She brought a little wetness into her eyes. Tears of happiness! “By the way, it’s Valerie!”
He had gotten back to his phone without any response.
“But how will you contact me?” She batted her lashes dramatically, “Can I have your contact number?”
This time he did give her, his undivided attention. It was written on his face, “Really? That soon? Do you think I’m a fool?”
He ignored her request and kept sliding his finger on his phone screen.
The students had started coming out of the joint. Maybe Jason had a hand in this.
“Maybe I should leave,” Valerie said good-naturedly, eyeing his lashes that were too thick.
Can boys have such thick lashes? It must be a sin to be this handsome and this gorgeous.
No guy up till now had successfully impressed her.
This one was different.
He wasn’t even looking at her face.
“Valerie!” Valerie closed her eyes in frustration when heard Marissa’s voice.
My little sister’s food can’t digest without annoying me.
Valerie tilted her head and gestured towards the car, “Get inside, Mar. I’ll be there in a minute.”
Marissa slung her bag on her shoulder and went to sit on the passenger seat. However, when Valerie turned around to focus back on the hottie, his eyes were no more on his phone.
Instead, they were at Marissa. Her younger sister.
Valerie felt like she had swallowed a bitter pill. It never happened. No guy could walk past her–or ignore her– if she and Marissa were in the same room. This was a first.
How could a drop-dead gorgeous, rich hunk stare at her little sister in her presence? How could he when she didn’t have anything that Valerie had? Plus, Marissa was overweight.
Was this guy blind?
Usually, she used to step back, away from the guys just to show them attitude. They always came after her.
But this one? Rafael Sinclair?
How could he…
She was turning away to get to her car when her arm was gripped by a strong hand, “Miss!” Valerie wasn’t expecting it and was taken aback. But she didn’t let it show on her face.
“Y-Yes?”
“What was your name?” he asked her yet kept looking behind her.
“Valerie,” Valerie gritted through her teeth.
“You want a job? Here is my number. Contact me and I’ll see what I can do for you,” he jotted something on a piece of paper and gave it to her.
Valerie couldn’t believe her luck.
“Ok,” she nodded with a smile. Rafael Sinclair wanted her to contact him. Wow!
With a big grin, she took the seat behind the wheel and started the engine, “What took you so long?” She asked Marissa in a good mood, “Father can’t keep assigning me such duties when I’m busy with my stuff,” She complained lightly.
She was expecting a counterattack from Marissa, but she stayed silent. Marissa always tried to stand up to her shit but the lack of support from their parents made her somewhat underconfident girl.
“What’s up? Why so quiet?” Val asked glancing over. Marissa shrugged; her gaze fixed out the window. Valerie decided not to press any further.
She was least interested in the problems of her sixteen-year-old sister who was popular in the family due to her brains.

A small knock made Valerie look up from the magazine she was reading. A Korean sheet mask was on her face, and she had to wait a few minutes more before taking it off.
“Hey!” Marissa came inside, “Busy?”
Valerie shrugged and pointed towards her face, “Sort of.”
Marissa sat down on the edge of her bed and started rubbing her legs with her palms. Valerie thought she was nervous.
That was the only time Marissa used to do this rubbing.
“What’s the matter?” She asked her sister who wasn’t uttering another word, “I hope you aren’t here to ask me to let you wear my off-white skirt because that’s not happening.”
Marissa chuckled and decided to be direct with her sister, “There was a guy, you were talking to when I came out of the joint,” she started and for a moment Valerie went still, “Who was he?”
Oh my God! Valerie wanted to laugh. Poor Marissa was trying her best to sound casual. However, Valerie knew.
So, Ms. Brains was at last crushing over a guy and this time Valerie wanted to tell her that brains don’t matter in practical life. Beauty does.
“That guy?” a proud grin appeared on her face, “He was just a random guy who wanted my phone number. Ha-ha. Why?”
