Chapter 331: 331- Strawberry Taste
Marissa stayed in the attached bathroom for a few more minutes. She didn’t know how to face the man who was her husband, yet he was also a stranger to her.
Closest yet the farthest.
She washed her face, applied moisturizer, and then practiced some deep breathing exercises before going out.
Funny!
Rafael was the one who taught her those breathing techniques for any unwelcoming situation.
With a deep sigh, she twisted the handle and came out of the bathroom. The man whose face resembled Rafael’s but was a lot more muscular than him, was sprawled on the bed looking at the ceiling. Oddly enough, there was a big grin on his face.
He must have felt her watching him as he raised his head to find her standing there.
“Hey!” he got up with a smile and patted the space beside him, “Come.”
With a forced smile, Marissa went to the bed and picked up the pillow. The smile on his handsome face vanished when he saw her taking the pillow to the couch.
Deep inside, Marissa felt tenderness when she saw that childlike innocence on his face.
Placing it down, she sat down on the couch and eyed the man who was her spouse.
“Aren’t we…” he pointed towards the pillow, “Husband wife?”
The corner of her lips curved up into a smile as she nodded, “Yes, we are.”
He found it odd. The girls at Ashua village were dying to sleep with him but here his wife …
“Th-Then why…” he shrugged in confusion.
Marissa heaved a sigh again, looking for the right words, “Look. Rafael!”
“Alexander!”
“Hmm?”
“My name. It’s Alexander,”
It was another test for Marissa. To call her husband by her son’s name.
“OK. Alexander!” he nodded when she called him by the correct name, “we might be husband and wife but…”
Rafael cocked up a brow, asking her silently to continue.
“But you know nothing about me… I’m just worried that…” She hesitated after every word and stopped herself midsentence when saw a gentle smile crossing his face.
“Keep talking!” he encouraged her with a nod, “You must be quite an amazing woman.”
The praise was unexpected, but Marissa didn’t let it show on her face.
“OK, Rafael… I mean,” she raised her palm to stop him, “Alexander. I don’t know you and you can’t expect… intimacy… from me… I mean…”
“I’m not planning to attack you, Marissa,” he said softly, “was I an animal before I went missing?”
Marissa felt stinging behind her eyelids, when she bobbed her head, “No. You were the gentlest human ever. A very … kind and softhearted man…”
A tear slipped down her face. He observed her quietly and she could see that broken expression across his face.

“Then let me come to you. Or maybe come to bed and we can sleep like brother and sister.”
Marissa choked on her tears. This Rafael seemed funnier, more intense, and…
She raised her eyes to look at his face.
More rugged and more handsome…
God!
Every good word belonged to him already. And after his return, every adjective was meaningless without adding the word ‘more’ to it.
“I …I…” she searched for a more appropriate word, “I can’t… I mean I’m…”
“Scared?” he helped her.
She nodded with a nervous chuckle, “Yeah. Maybe.”
“Don’t be,” he got up from the bed and started walking towards her and Marissa felt like the room had shrunk into a tiny cage.
She wanted to stop him, yet she wanted to see why he was moving to her with that serious face. Being extra cautious, he kneeled on the floor and offered her, his hand.
She swallowed her saliva and looked at the hand that had calluses on it. Instead of placing her hand, she held it in both hands and examined it.
“What have you been doing? Labor?” her finger was trailing over the hard patches of skin, and she could feel his eyes on her face.
But now everything looked less scary. Maybe because now, she was holding his hand.
How ironic was it!
She was scared of him, yet she was looking for solace in him.
“Kind of,” he brought his other hand to hold hers, “I was working in an automobile shop.”
A look of disbelief washed over Marissa’s face, “You were doing what?”
He smiled looking at her wide eyes and tried to sound all casual while standing up and scooping her up in his arms, “I used to fix tourists’ cars and I think I was pretty good at it,” he placed her gently on the bed and nudged her to shift a little.
Raising her ass, she did and made room for him.
“The family who saved me and spent a fortune on my treatment, sold their bicycles to save my life. I needed to return those to them. Renting those bicycles was their only source of income.”
He explained to her and congratulated himself for keeping her focused on his smooth talk, that she didn’t realize that he had successfully brought her to the bed.
“They sold bicycles?” she asked in awe, and he pressed her shoulders a little to make her lay in the bed.
“Yes. His name was John. I promised Mala that I’ll build a school there.”
The sudden shift of conversation to Mala made Marissa eye him suspiciously. His face was just above hers and he was slowly brushing his fingers through her soft black hair.
“Who is Mala? John’s wife?”
“Nah,” he smiled, “His sixteen-year-old daughter.”
Daughter? But underage!
She reminded herself and took a sigh of relief, but a pang of unease hit her when he said, “The elder one was eighteen. Her name was Taliya.”
Ouch! Talia was eighteen!
She looked back at his face to snap at him when realized he had bent his head to brush his lips on her cheek. Marissa felt her breath hitching in her chest.
“N…No!”
He didn’t seem to mind her rejection, “OK. Got it. Now go to sleep. You must be tired after all the… chaos…”
He told her softly and she thought of her kids, “We can bring them tomorrow if you want.” He spoke again and Marissa didn’t let the surprise show on her face.
How did he know, she was thinking about their kids?
She raised her hand to touch his face but changed her mind.
“You can touch me, you know? After all, we’re…”
“Yeah, I know,” she rolled her eyes and closed them. She wanted to sleep. If this was the dream, she wanted to enjoy it as long as possible.
“Even if you think it’s a dream, you can let me kiss you!” Marissa opened her eyes in shock. This was definitely a dream. Right?
How could he…
With a deep breath, she looked up and gave a slow nod to her head. A go-ahead for the kiss.
His face turned intense within a few seconds, and he leaned down, bringing his lips closer to hers.
“No matter what I was in the past life but… in the last year, I never felt the urge to kiss anyone but you.”
He murmured and before Marissa could say anything, his lips touched hers in a light teasing way. He got a little bold and trailed the tip of his tongue on her lips.
Marissa had to hold his collar to keep her sanity intact. She wanted to stop him. It was supposed to be a kiss, not something so intimate.
After the thorough trailing, he opened his mouth and started sucking her lips soundly. It took all her willpower to keep herself from moaning.
This was getting intense. Almost out of hands.
She wanted to protest when he broke the kiss. She was herself confused by these conflicting feelings.
“Wow!” he whispered and leaned his forehead against hers, “I think I do remember this strawberry taste.”
