Chapter 335: 335- Husband/Friend/Crime Partner
“I didn’t stay here at my own will,” Geena tried to convince Marissa but at this point no one was trustworthy, “Your husband wanted me to stay here! You can ask him.”
“You know my husband’s condition, Geena. Thank you for bringing him back to me. But I can’t take risks. His life is in danger, and we didn’t know who tried to kill him,” she said with a shrug.
For a minute, she thought she saw pain flashing on her face but now Marissa didn’t want to take risks.
She couldn’t afford to lose anyone dear to her. Life rarely gave second chances, and she didn’t want to gamble on it.
“Do you think if I was a criminal and the murderer, I would have brought him back?” Geena asked her but then she couldn’t blame Marissa too.
“Fine!” she picked up her small leather bag and slung it on her shoulder, “Say hi to Rafael. Tell him that I left because my employer called me for a twenty-four-hour shift.”
After she left, Marissa didn’t know what to feel.
Nina almost hated Marissa for doubting her sincerity. Valerie might not be mad at her anymore, but she couldn’t be trusted. The only problem was, she couldn’t be kept out of the house because their mom lived there.
And now Geena who brought back her husband was also pissed at her.
“What should I do?” she chewed her upper lip and dialed Sophie’s number. She could feel the tension coiling in her shoulders.
The call was received, and Sophie’s voice sounded rushed, “Marissa!”
“Hey,” Marissa tried to mask the nervousness in her voice, “How are kids?”
“Oh, don’t worry. They are good,” Sophia’s busy voice came out of the phone, “I just finished my night duty and now going home.”
“Oh. Is everything alright at the hospital?” She asked her friend in concern, “I hope you’re getting the rest.”
“Yeah. Almost. You know? Just one of those nights. We nearly lost a mom and her baby, but both pulled through. Yay!” Marissa closed her eyes with a chuckle.
Sophie had gone back to being a gynecologist in her newly opened hospital.
“Great! You’re doing an amazing job, Soph!”
“Thanks. But what about you? You sound… off…” She could sense worry in Sophia’s voice, “What’s going on?”
“I … I didn’t want to bother you. But there is so much going on… I don’t know who to trust,” Marissa tried to keep her voice composed, “I was just concerned about kids and your private life, Soph …”
“Urgh. Marissa. Don’t worry about my private life,” Sophie’s voice turned tender, “Fix yours. Kids deserve a safe space and right now, I’m their best option.”
Marissa didn’t want to disturb the newly engaged couple’s privacy yet right now she didn’t have any other option.
There was a pause, then Sophie spoke, “Look, Marissa. I know you’ve been through a lot. But just focus on yourself. And why are you worried when your man is back. He is at your side.”
Rafael was back but he knew nothing.
“He doesn’t know who was after his life. Valerie might use Mom as an excuse to visit my house again. Geena already stayed overnight because Rafael said so… and Nina?”
“What about her?”
“Well!” Marissa rolled her eyes, “she loves her grandkids.”
“Hmm,” Marissa could guess Sophie was now walking due to her labored breaths, “Marissa. Talk to Rafael. Ask him that he can’t allow any random person to enter the house before asking you.”
It was the hardest task. With his mental condition, he might think that she was dismissing the people important to him.
“By the way, where is Nina? She can at least throw Val and Geena out.”

“She is mad at me,” Marissa told her in a sad tone, “I trusted Geena and thought that Nina had a hand in Rafael’s murder. That night, you were there with me. Nina was outside my living room begging me to accept her apology and let her meet the kids.”
“Yes. I remember,” Sophie agreed to her, “Take your time, my friend. Right now, your best bet is bringing back Nina. At least Val and Geena will stay within limits. It will be easier to handle one instead of three.”
She had a point. When Marissa disconnected the call, she started tapping her phone on her chin.
Some serious steps needed to be taken.
Rafael was alive and the police had dismissed all the charges against Valerie. She was free to go anywhere she wanted.
Before Rafael’s return, she did try to throw a tantrum that she was a prisoner in Kanderton but now when he was back, she had almost forgotten that she wanted to leave the city.
With Rafael’s present mental state, it was time to show the world that she was the man of the family.
“What are you thinking?” the low, velvety voice made her jump out of her thoughts. She turned to look at Rafael who was now wearing a grey polo shirt with jeans.
He was observing her face closely and Marissa looked into his green eyes to find any familiarity.
“I need to get ready to go to the office,” she explained to him softly. He held her hand and kissed it.
“Am I allowed to accompany you?” the innocent question made her smile, “Of course. I’ll be over the moon to have you around but that’s doable after a few days.”
There was confusion on his face, and he was weighing his words, maybe trying to decide if he should argue or not.
“That’s your office,” she placed her hand on his rugged cheek, feeling a dash of pleasure passing through her, “You can go there whenever you want. It’s just for a few days. If you trust me, then please wait a little more.”
She felt his green eyes penetrating her soul.
“Why do I get the feeling,” he raised his hand and murmured, gently twirling the dark lock of her hair brushing across her forehead, “that you aren’t heading to the office?”
Marissa raised her brows in surprise, without any idea that he could still read her face so easily.
“So, Mrs. Sinclair. Care to explain what are you up to? Because I also care about your safety, and you can’t expect me to sit on my ass if my wife is going out to some unknown place.”
Marissa rolled her lips between her teeth. He still knew her inside out.
“Fine!” she muttered and met his eyes quite boldly, holding his hand, “Then accompany me. Not as my husband but as a friend,” she suggested with a glint in her eyes, “as a crime partner.”
Rafael who could see the light blush creeping to her cheeks, touched it with his index finger, “Certainly. After you, ma’am.”
