Chapter 381: 381- Long Awaited Surgery
A nurse asked them to follow her to Dr. Sanders office. They were here to talk to the surgeon and for that purpose, they needed to show him Abigail’s latest reports.
On the doctor’s insistence, they had brought Abi too.
“Do they have a zoo?” She asked Marissa who was trying her best not to show the worry on her face.
“No, sweetheart. It’s a hospital,” she told her and held her daughter’s hand in her cold ones.
“Daddy! Mommy is so cold!” She took Marissa’s hand in her small ones. Rafael held Marissa’s other hand and kissed it.
“Hey, love,” he looked at Marissa’s face in concern, “Are you alright?”
Marissa nodded nervously. She wanted to run out of this building.
“I’m good. It’s just… I’m still not ready for all this…” she chuckled, and Rafael pulled her into him, pressing a kiss on her head.
“I know,” he whispered, “but we need to be strong for her sake,” he tilted his head towards Abi, who was walking ahead, “Don’t you want her to play sports in the future?”
The nurse leading the way, took so many turns in different hallways that Marissa had almost lost her sense of direction. She was just following her blindly.
“This way, ma’am,” the nurse gestured towards the clinic door that had a nameplate of Dr. Sanders fixed on it, “Sir is busy with a patient. He’ll be here in a while.”
They nodded while taking the seats opposite the doctor’s desk. The nurse held Abi’s hand and kneeled near her, “Would you like to try something from our canteen?” she then turned to the couple, “Can I take her to the kiddy canteen? Our administrators set that up, especially for our kids’ ward.”
A smile broke on the child’s lips when Marissa allowed her with a nod, “Sure, go ahead.”

The doctor’s office smelled faintly of disinfectant. Dr. Sanders was a tall man who was in touch with Marissa for the last two years for Abigail’s surgery.
He knew Abigail’s condition and was popular for the hundred percent success rate of such surgeries.
Leaning back in his chair, he scanned Abigail’s reports. He flipped through a few pages, then paused, his brows furrowing slightly.
“Mr. And Mrs. Sinclair,” he began, setting the papers down gently, “I won’t sugarcoat this. Abigail needs to be admitted tonight. We need to get everything prepped for surgery first thing in the morning.”
“Tonight?” Marissa’s hand tightened around Rafael’s as she heard what the doctor was saying. They were here to postpone the surgery for a few days.
Marissa assumed that maybe Abi needed more time. Though Rafael wasn’t convinced but he was just here to support her.
But now hearing the opposite words from the surgeon made the situation a little tricky. He turned to look at his wife’s face who already went through a lot. He wished he could do something… anything to make her happy.
His eyes darted to Abigail, who sat on the small stool by the window, swinging her legs blissfully, unaware of the conversation between the adults.
“Yes,” the doctor replied. He stood up and walked over to the whiteboard, pulling a marker from a side pocket, “the sooner we act, the better. Her condition is manageable now, but waiting can make it more complicated.”
Rafael cleared his throat and when he spoke his jaw was clenched, “Will she…” he paused for a minute, “I mean… is it risky?”
Dr. Sanders paused and then turned to face them, “Every surgery has risks, Mr. Sinclair,” he wrote a few medical terms on the board and then spoke after placing the cap back on the marker, “But this procedure is something we’ve done many times. Abigail is young and strong!” he eyed Abigail with a smile, “She has every reason to come through this just fine!” he finished with a firm nod.
A knock at the door interrupted them. A nurse popped her head in, holding a clipboard, “Dr. Sanders. Sorry to interrupt, but Mr. Olsen in three zero two is asking for you again.”
“I’ll be there in a few minutes,” the doctor said, offering a reassuring smile to the couple as the nurse nodded and slipped away.

Marissa exhaled shakily, her free hand pressing against her temple, “I just don’t know. She has been having these frequent flu attacks lately. Her immune system isn’t that strong… she… she is so little.”
Dr. Sanders crouched slightly, meeting Marissa’s gaze, “Frequent flu and fever aren’t caused by a weak heart, Mrs. Sinclair. As a mom, it’s natural to worry about your kid. But don’t forget… kids are resilient. We’ll keep her comfortable here, and you both will be right here with her, every step of the way.”
Abigail, who might be getting bored by now, looked over, “Mommy. Daddy. Are we staying here longer?” she must have sensed the tension in the room.
Rafael forced a smile, his heart aching at Abi’s innocence, “Just for a little while, sweetheart,” he assured her softly.
Marissa swallowed hard and shook her head, “Alright!” she said finally, “Let’s do it,” she told the doctor with a shaky grin.
Rafael could see the torment in her eyes, and he tightened his grip around her hand, “Are you sure, love?”
Marissa nodded, trying to control her tears.
Dr. Sanders picked up his stethoscope and looked at them, “I’ll have the nurse start the paperwork. We’ll take good care of her. I promise,” with a smile, he then turned his gaze to Abi, “Hey, little, miss Abi Sinclair. Are you gonna visit me this evening? I’m thinking of bringing you some chocolates.”
A cute smile cracked on Abi’s innocent face, “I would love to, Mr. Sanders.”
As the doctor left the room, Marissa leaned into Rafael, her tears at last spilling over, “She will be alright. Right, Rafael?”
“Yeah, sweetheart. She is the daughter of a very strong mother. She will come out of it like a warrior. Don’t you trust your genes?” He wrapped his arm around her.
Abigail was humming quietly, looking out of the window. She was totally unaware that tomorrow morning her long-awaited surgery would start.
