Chapter 385: 385- Hell Of A Friend
A young doctor in scrubs knelt beside her, holding a small plush teddy bear, “Hey, Abigail Sinclair. What’s his name?” There was a warm smile on his face.
Abi giggled and clutched the teddy in her arms, “I’m not a kid to hold a teddy like this!” Marissa who was standing close by, hid her smile.
Unlike last night, she and Rafael were more relaxed today. Abi was the most naïve child among her three kids but today she also thought that she was bigger for this teddy.
“Is he brave like you?” The doctor pulled a small disposable glove from his pocket and tied it into a makeshift cape.
“Hihi. Are you changing him into a superhero?” Abigail asked while watching the doctor with interest.
Marissa looked over her shoulder where Rafael stood by the door. She could feel the strained expression on his face behind that easy smile. She went to him and took hold of his hand, “Ready for this?”
Rafael’s hand hovered near her shoulder maybe to comfort her or maybe to hold himself together.
“Abi!” Marissa called her daughter’s name her eyes still on Abigail’s father’s face, “We will be right outside the room.”
“Daddy! Can I eat tacos after going home?” she asked Rafael innocently and Rafael had to suppress his smile.
He stepped in, bending down a little to her level, “Absolutely. You can have tacos and if you be a good girl then you can race with Alex too.”
“Oh, Georgie told me that he will help me practice,” Rafael tilted his head with a frown and found Marissa mouthing silently, “Delinda’s son.”
“Okay superhero,” the doctor present there interrupted with a playful grin, “I’m going to apply this jelly and … it’s super cold but it’s the secret to the ultimate power of superheroes,” He waved a tube near her face.
A nurse entered the room and then approached the bed holding a clipboard, “I think it’s time to say goodbye to your parents, Abigail.”
Marissa glanced at Rafael, whispering, “I think we need to leave the room. She seems to be in…” her voice trailed off, her lips pressing into thin lines, “in good hands, I guess…”
“Hmm,” Rafael kept his gaze fixed on his daughter, “she is such a brave girl.”
The doctor was telling Abigail the benefits of using the oxygen mask and she was shooting cute silly questions his way.
Rafael’s throat tightened and Marissa looked away briefly, pretending to adjust her skirt. Rafael moved closer to his daughter and kissed her head, “You’re my bravest child, Abigail Sinclair,” he whispered to her, and she hurriedly kissed her father’s rough cheek.
Marissa also went to her for a brief kiss. Her girl seemed more interested in discussing magic with the newly arrived nurse.
“I love you!” Marissa told her in a cracked voice trying to stay composed.
“Mommy and Daddy love you, my girl!” Rafael told her and she nodded at them.
“I love you too, Daddy and Mommy,” she waved at them excitedly, “B-Bye…”
The anesthesiologist stepped forward, signaling them to leave the room.
He held Abi’s body and helped her to lie on the bed. Abi looked at their faces with hooded eyes.
They were still standing near the door when the nurse motioned them with a polite smile to step outside.

“She will be good,” Rafael told her after taking a seat beside her in the waiting room and pulling her to his side.
Marissa silently leaned her head to his shoulder. As expected, Sophie and Joseph were the first ones to reach them.
They just sat silently after hugging Marissa and Rafael.
“Did you take your breakfast?” Sophie asked her and then cocked up a brow when both of them shook their heads.

“Let’s go to the canteen and I’ll buy you some sandwiches,” she held Marissa’s hand and started pulling her upwards.
“We will have it in a while!” Rafael tried explaining to her, but Sophie wasn’t ready to listen.
“You two must be out of your mind. If any of you will faint who will carry you to the hospital bed? I don’t have that much stamina…” She turned to Marissa who was still sitting on that chair, “Come on, Mar. Move that pretty ass of yours. Your system needs some carbs, proteins, and a big cup of coffee!”
Marissa groaned and glanced towards Rafael who had a helpless grin on his face. He was a strict husband when it came to Marissa’s diet but right now even he couldn’t think of anything else except Abigail.
“Rafael Sinclair! Have you turned deaf?” the stern voice of Sophie made Rafael stand up from his seat.
“She is right, honey,” he leaned down to kiss Marissa on her lips, “Abi would want to meet her smiling and energetic parents. Not some lethargic peeps who won’t be able to keep their eyes open for a minute.”
Marissa exhaled a long breath and got up forcefully from her seat. She didn’t want to eat anything. Her panic attack could get worse.
This morning when she gave breakfast to the kids, she kept playing with the food on her plate, not knowing that Rafael was also doing the same.
“My stomach is making these odd grumbling sounds,” Marissa told Sophie when she was going to buy something from the counter.
“And you are giving excuses just like Abi,” Sophie told her while tapping her finger on Marissa’s head, “Don’t worry. I’ll opt for something light.”
Once they were seated at the café, Sophie brought a tray that had two bowls of piping hot tomato soup along with some garlic bread.
“This is too much,” Marissa tried to protest but Sophie again gave her that stern look, “Eat it. Ok? Otherwise, I’ll ask the same surgeon to cut open your tummy and put the food there.”
Her peculiar threat worked.
Marissa tilted her head when found Rafael grinning at Sophie’s threat.
“You are one hell of a friend, Mrs. Sophia Joseph,” he complimented her.
