Chapter 387: 387- Pills
Valerie kissed her mom’s forehead and waved goodbye. She went to the living room where Flint was sitting in the rocking chair, watching the kids who were watching some movie.
She looked at the kids fondly. Marissa always made sure to let them stay in their room whenever she was around. She always tried her best to avoid facing her nieces and nephew.
Sometimes she wanted to talk to them and play with them like a normal aunt would do. But alas!
She was responsible for the mess and hence deserved to be kicked out of their lives. The little girl whose name was Ariel resembled her a lot. While watching the movie, her index finger was slowly rolling the hair strand around her finger. Something she had taken from Valerie. Valerie thought with a proud smile.
“Hello,” she waved at the kids like she was their childhood buddy. The kids just gave her a non-interested gaze.
Flint was regarding her with a hawk-like stare.
“No need to talk to them,” he yelled, “They are already disturbed!”
Disturbed? She thought with a frown.
“Why are they disturbed?” before Flint could respond to her meanly, a child who looked a little older than Alex and Ariel spoke to her without moving his eyes off the TV screen.
“Today is Abigail’s surgery!”
Abigail’s surgery? And no one thought to inform me?
***
Abigail’s surgery was supposed to take six hours, but eight hours had passed and there was no sign of Dr. Sanders.
Marissa was trying her best not to get a panic attack. For that purpose, she was forcing herself to meditate.
“Why is he not coming out?” she asked Sophie who had worry lines on her forehead.
“Sometimes procedures take time, Mar. They have to be extra cautious,” she patted Marissa’s back, but her statement wasn’t convincing.
I can’t afford to lose her. A random thought crossed Marissa’s mind.
“R-Rafael…” she turned to hold his shirt, “Can you ask someone around?” Rafael’s eyes dipped to her face, and he just nodded.
“Give it some more time, strawberry. Let’s not worry them,”
“Why? Shouldn’t we ask what is going on with our daughter?” she was being unreasonable here.
“Shouldn’t we allow them to focus on our daughter? To keep their full attention to help her recover faster?” he tried to reason with her while his own heart was thudding wildly in his chest.
Mom. You promised me. Please ask God not to take my daughter. She is too small for this.
He remembered the dream he had the previous night. He was hanging with that string. He already lost his parents and now he didn’t want to lose anyone else.
“Don’t worry. She will be alright!” they both turned when heard a familiar voice behind them.
“Valerie?” Marissa breathed the word. She was standing there with a somber expression on her face.
“Though you never let me meet my niece, that doesn’t mean I can’t visit her here,” a small smile crossed her lips, “I’m sure, she will be all healthy, Marissa.”
She didn’t even bother to look at the man who she used to call her husband.
“What’re you doing here?” Marissa asked her sister with curiosity evident in her voice.
Valerie’s smile faltered briefly at Marissa’s query, but she steadied herself.

“I went to see Mom,” she said softly, “And then got to know that you were here… so I thought…” she hesitated a bit before adding, “I thought you might need someone… Listen, sister. I know I did wrong … terribly wrong but believe me. I’ll never try to kill someone for my benefit. I might be greedy but I’m not a murderer.”
Marissa’s gaze hardened slightly; doubts were flickering across her features. She was still skeptical of her sister’s intentions.
It was hard to trust Valerie after all the pain she caused to Marissa and Rafael. She wanted to argue and push her away, but her words failed her.
Just a few days back her kids lost their granny. Now introducing Valerie to her kids meant that someday she would break their trust, and her kids would think that their relatives were there just to vanish later from their lives.
Valerie glanced at the closed door where Abi’s surgery was going on. Her face softened, “She is your daughter, after all, Marissa. I’m sure she is going to pull through. I just know it.”
This must be the first time Valerie paid her a compliment. Otherwise, like Nina, her life always revolved around herself.
She was no different than Nina. In most of the aspects, they were similar.
Hungry for power and wealth.
Marissa looked sideways and found her husband standing there rigidly with a clenched jaw. He stayed silent all this time not interfering in the conversation.
The woman who was being sweet to her wasn’t a decent woman. She was someone without any morals or values.
He was still trying to process her sudden appearance.
Valerie gave one last glance at her sister and said quietly, “I’ll be around if you need me,” with a tightlipped smile she nodded and was about to turn on her heels when suddenly she seemed to remember something and stopped.
She turned back to face them and at last, looked in Rafael’s direction too.
“I think… you both deserve to know that,” she rolled her lips between her teeth, “When you two were together… Nina…” her voice trailed off when she sensed Marissa balling her fists by her sides.
“What about her?” Rafael asked her in a clipped tone.
“Your mother used to give pills to Marissa mixed in her food and drink,”
“Pills?” they both asked in unison.
Rafael placed his hands in his pants pockets, “What kind of pills?” Deep down he was dreading the answer.
“Birth control pills. She used to mix them in her drinks and food,” she found them looking at each other and didn’t miss their startled expressions, “Abigail was sick since birth. Right?” she smirked when they didn’t answer her, “Nina might be responsible for her condition.”
