Chapter 407: 407- Wine Bottle
After that slap, Aniya couldn’t ask Valerie again.
She swallowed hard while running her finger slowly on the table.
You’re my princess!
A voice spoke in her head. Aniya felt like someone had knocked the breath out of her. She knew the voice. She knew who it belonged to.
She still remembered those vivid scenes. But she couldn’t tell this to Valerie.
She might get a heart attack. Her mother thought that she had successfully wiped the memory of her past life. But that wasn’t true.
She had often heard Valerie talking to her husband Alaric.
“You made a mistake that night. You brought the wrong girl. I specifically mentioned that it was the blonde child. But you brought a sick child who is useless to us.”
In the beginning, it used to cause pain to Aniya a lot that she was an unwanted child but later she got used to it.
“It’s good that it was me who he picked up. The other girl shouldn’t be in pain like me.”
Aniya went back to bed and almost fell on it tiredly.
Her body was not as tired as her mind.
“Go to sleep,” she told herself, “Go to sleep because you have an early start tomorrow.”

“These tips are getting lesser with each passing day,” Valerie started counting the money again. She wasn’t angry but Aniya was prepared for that slap that had become the part of her life.
“They usually pay more on weekends, Mom,” Aniya said in a convincing voice. She couldn’t tell her mom that she was hiding some of her savings in her shoe box.
“Hmm,” Valerie lit a cigarette and took a drag, “How much does Lisa earn?” Valerie asked her casually.
“A lot more than me,” the words were out before she could stop herself.
Shit! Why did I say that?
Valerie looked up with a frown, “And why is that?”
“Umm…” she searched for more words. Telling Valerie about how Lisa offered her services to the restaurant customers wasn’t wise. Valerie wouldn’t hesitate to ask Aniya to do the same.
“I’m asking you something, Aniya!” Valerie’s tone got hard. Her hand reached out to hold her dyed hair in her fists, “Why do you think she earns more?” she hissed near her ear.
“That’s… that’s because she works double shifts,” she managed between the pain.
“So why can’t you?” Valerie gave her head a hard shove that made her utter a scream, but she quickly gulped it.
She wasn’t allowed to scream because that made Valerie angrier.
“I … I want to… Mom… I swear I want to but…”
“But?”
“But then all household chores will be on you, Mom. You’ll be overburdened,” she explained.
Valerie kept looking at her innocent face, the girl was squeezing her eyes in fear. The child resembled so much like her sister that she enjoyed inflicting pain on her.

She always got the feeling that she was giving this pain not to her daughter Aniya but to Marissa.
She left her hair with a final shove, “Hmm. Plan something. Go for two shifts as soon as possible.”
“Ok, Mom!” Aniya felt relief. For the moment, she was spared.

She quickly did the dishes so that she could get ready and go to her job place on time.
“Aniya!” she had stepped on the staircase to climb up when her father called her.
“Yes, Dad,” she turned her head to look at the man who was sitting on the torn couch with a pot belly. His feet were propped up on the table where glasses and wine bottles were placed.
One glass was in his hand, and he was watching a Comedy show on a high volume.
“Bring me another bottle of wine,” he told her without moving his eyes from the TV screen. Aniya looked around in confusion. Before that he never asked her to bring a wine bottle. It was always Valerie who used to bring it to him.
“Umm. Dad?”
Alaric James at last lowered the volume and turned his head to her, “What part you didn’t understand. Huh? You fu*cking bitch. Close your mouth and bring me the fu*cking bottle!” he screamed and the glass in his hand landed near Aniya’s feet, missing her just by an inch.
She was standing there, holding her breath.
“What happened?” Valerie came from her room with a sleepy face, “Who broke the glass? Aniya is it you? Do you know how expensive it was?”
Aniya didn’t have enough courage to speak. Anything in this small house was brought from her money.
Before her job, it was the adoption money they used to get. And after that, it got better when she got the job.
None of these people ever moved a muscle to provide her with anything. Be it clothing, food, or any other necessity.
“My wine bottle. I wanted it,” Alaric shouted, “And by the way, where were you?” he got up from the couch and pushed Valerie with full force.
She fell near the washing machine and Aniya saw her nose bleeding.
Good, God. This was one of those episodes where Valerie used to pour all her anger on her. Aniya needed to get out of the house really quick.
She darted to her room and picked up the first t-shirt she got her hands on.
The voices coming from downstairs were a mix of things breaking and Valerie’s screams.
After putting on the t-shirt, she got out of her room and went down skipping several flights of stairs.
“I told you I needed a wife for my needs. Look at you. You’re never available,” Alaric was crouched down near Valerie’s limp body holding her neck.
Aniya fixed the muffler around her neck and placed her hand on the doorknob to twist the handle.
Come on, Aniya. Hurry! She told herself.
She was about to open the door when a strong hand, held her by her hair and pulled her back, “You bitch! Where is my wine bottle?”
