Chapter 416: 416- Alone
“Sangua City,” Lisa thought for a moment, tapping her chin, “If that sounds familiar, how about we head to my place after the shift ends? We can …” She wiggled her brows, but Aniya could still feel the stinging of Valerie’s slap on her cheek.
“I don’t think so I can…” she hesitated, “last time when I stayed, Mom didn’t like it.”
She could feel Lisa’s eyes on her face but thankfully she didn’t interrogate her further, nor she tried to push her for any explanations.
“If you want freedom,” Lisa’s voice dropped to a whisper, “then you have to do something about it, Aniya,” she went to the bathroom mirror and grabbed a comb. She needed to start working on the ends of her braided hair-tail, “Ever seen a frog left to die in boiling water?” Lisa asked her casually without looking at her, “You know what it does?”
Aniya didn’t reply, not certain where this was going.
Lisa at last turned to meet Aniya’s eyes, “It fights. It keeps fighting for its freedom. You need to do the same. That’s what you have to do. You can’t just sit there and take it.”
Aniya couldn’t hold her gaze and looked away. Her friend was right, and it stung.
Lisa sighed and pressed on, “Do you want freedom, Aniya? Or do you want to rot in that hell forever?”
Oh, that struck a nerve. Aniya’s eyes snapped up to her face, “Don’t stop struggling. Don’t stop fighting.”
Aniya balled her hand into a fist and held it up to Aniya, “You can’t give up now when you are so close to victory.”

Later that evening, they were back at Lisa’s place after their shift ended.
Lisa had her laptop open, scanning articles and profiles related to Sangua.
She was digging about all the influential people of Sangua City, “And here is the hottest, and most talked-about couple of Sangua. Mr. Rafael Sinclair and his wife Mrs. Marissa Sinclair,” She announced, turning the screen towards her friend.
There on the screen, she could see a couple where the man was strikingly handsome and wore glasses. He hardly had a silver hair on his head.
The same was the case with his wife. She was beaming while standing beside him.
“The couple lives in Kanderton but both have their hometown at Sangua. Their permanent residence is at Kanderton. I don’t think these are the ones you’re looking for.”
Aniya felt confused.
Kanderton.
She had heard about this place too. All those names sounded familiar.
“I need to know about Kanderton,” she told Lisa who gestured her to use her laptop. Aniya wasn’t trying to stay tonight but she needed to invest some time for her future. She wouldn’t have much time after her birthday that’s why she wanted to get ready for the smooth move to another country.
There was a family picture of the Sinclairs where they were standing with their kids. She wanted to click on it to have a better look when her phone started ringing.
“Where are you?” Valerie’s stern voice came out of her phone, “At Lisa’s?”
“I’m not staying overnight, Mom,” she quickly explained, “there was a shortage of staff today, so they handed over some extra duties to us.”
“Hmm,” After Valerie’s low grunt, the phone got disconnected. She exhaled a long breath and looked at Lisa who was now clicking some keys on her laptop.
“Look at this young man,” she pointed to the enlarged picture of a man who had black hair and inky black eyes. He was looking at the camera with a wide grin, “He is the son of their family friend. His name is Georgie…”
Georgie?
The name rang a bell. Even the smile in the picture seemed like she knew the man closely. The name had sent a jolt through her body and her head throbbed. The shooting pain in her head intensified and she had to hold her head to keep it from exploding.
“Aniya!” Lisa’s panicked voice cut through the haze, “Aniya! What happened? What’s wrong?”

The pain subsided within seconds, but she felt exhausted at this point, “I think… I should leave.”
She ignored her friend’s worried protests as she grabbed her things and walked out of her apartment door.

She stepped inside the house, fearing that Valerie must be flaring up about her being late. She braced herself, mentally preparing for the slaps and kicks from her mom.
But the house was quiet.
Thankfully she wasn’t home. Relief washed over her. Alaric had dozed off on the living room couch, snoring lightly. TV was blaring at full volume and empty wine bottles were scattered on the coffee table along with an army of glasses. It was littered like any other piece of furniture in this house.
She slipped into the kitchen to fill her water bottle. Her stomach sank when she found the sink overflowing with dirty dishes. It seemed like a battalion had held a feast here.
Of course, Valerie expected her to do the dishes.
For a moment, Aniya thought to leave it untouched. But then with a resigned sigh, she rolled up her shirt sleeves and started scrubbing them.
They never had a dishwasher. She was the dishwasher of the house.
As her hands worked through the grime, her mind drifted back to the faces she had seen earlier that evening on Lisa’s laptop.
“I’ll come back for you.”
“I’ll marry you, Abi.”
The words echoed in her head. A steel plate slipped off Aniya’s soapy hands, crashing to the floor and making a loud clanking sound. Aniya winced at the noise and held her breath.
“Who is this?” Alaric’s slurred voice came from the living room.
“It’s me, Dad,” she called out from the kitchen. She quickly picked up the plate and placed it in the sink, thinking that Alaric had gone back to sleep.
Nah! She was wrong.
She had again gotten busy with washing when a hand slowly crawled from behind her and held her bo*ob.
“Finally!” Alaric whispered in her ear, “We’re alone.”
