Chapter 424: 424- Congratulations
Valerie couldn’t find the words to explain what had just happened. She didn’t even know how much Aniya had witnessed.
Damn you, Alaric. I told you to be careful.
That man could never do anything useful with his life and was also preventing Valerie from improving hers.
She had already told him about her plans regarding Aniya. But no.
Sometimes Alaric could become a classic jerk. A pain in the ass.
Valerie swallowed hard, forcing a strained smile, “How long have you been sitting there?”
Instead of answering her, Aniya stood up and started getting down, her eyes stayed on Valerie’s panicked face, “It’s ok, Mom,” she sighed and looked around, “I know you love him.”
It’s OK if he tried to abuse me. That doesn’t count. After all, I’m not your real daughter. She thought bitterly.
Valerie was standing there with a guilty expression.
“Our birthday plans are still on,” she informed Valerie with a smile who seemed surprised.
“But… Aniya…”
Aniya raised her palm to make her stop. She didn’t want to listen to any more crap. Before leaving this place, she wanted to make good memories. Even if it was just for one day.
“I know how to keep my part of the bargain. We are still spending the day together. As for today?” she smirked, “Mr. Ramsey sent me home because I broke those precious bowls.”
Enough with the lies. Sometimes it’s OK to tell the truth.
Sometimes it’s okay not to fear the consequences.

The next day she woke up with a big smile on her face. She planned to take Valerie to a café for a nice breakfast and then go shopping with her.
It wasn’t supposed to be high-end shopping, but she wanted to buy her something good before leaving the house.
“Come on, Mom,” Aniya pulled Valerie by the hand, “We are having breakfast here and then I have a surprise for you.”
“Aniya,” Valerie laughed lightly, “It’s your birthday. Not mine. You don’t have to spoil me like this.”
“Just enjoy it. Okay?” She smiled as they stepped into the small cozy café. Aniya had almost forgotten about last night. She didn’t want to remember anything about Alaric.
They slid into a booth by the window and Aniya quickly grabbed the menu.
“What do you want to have, Mom?” Her eyes were scanning the options, “they have some amazing pastries.”
“Umm. I’ll just have some toast and coffee…” Valerie was hesitant when her eyes darted towards the price list.
Aniya made a pout, “Umm hmm. No, Mom! Remember what I said last night? We are supposed to enjoy the day. So… that means we aren’t doing ‘just a toast'” She then leaned a little, “Don’t worry. I have my savings.”
A nervous laugh slipped through Valerie’s lips. She got the idea that Aniya must have hidden her savings from her. She tucked her hair behind her ear awkwardly.
“Fine!” she gave up, “An omelet with spinach and feta. And a cappuccino.”
“Great!” Aniya grinned, “I’ll have waffles with strawberries and whipped cream… umm an iced latte maybe along with it …” Her eyes were still on the menu, and in some odd way she reminded Valerie of her sister.
They had a great time while having food and Valerie had to give this much credit to Aniya for not bringing up Alaric. Nor did she complain.

What was the girl planning? She thought for a minute when Aniya was telling her something about Lisa while wiping the whipped cream from the tip of her nose.
“Thank you,” Valerie spoke the unexpected words, “This all means a lot to me, Aniya.”
It felt weird. After spending the day with Aniya, would she and Alaric still hurt her?

After breakfast, Aniya took her to a nearby shopping center, “I can’t buy you a high-brand bag, but I promise you, Mom. Someday I’ll give you the world’s most expensive bags and purses.”
Valerie tilted her head while walking, “And how would you do that, Aniya?” she asked eyeing her daughter.
“Well!” she shrugged, “I’m not educated enough so I might start a business that doesn’t require a degree.”
Valerie had to control her nerves. This was what Marissa did when she started a home-based catering business.
When Valerie tried to play with her sister’s fate and emotions, that’s what Marissa did. She got up on her own feet and faced the world bravely.
Valerie could see the same spark in this girl.
Aniya bought a leather bag for her that looked too classy. It might not have a designer label, but it was still out of Valerie’s reach.
But not anymore.
Valerie thought with a sigh. Soon her bad days were about to be over.

They had dinner at an Italian restaurant and came back home in high spirits.
“So tomorrow you will spend your time with Lisa?” she asked Aniya who was tiredly climbing the staircase.
Aniya paused and slowly turned to look at Valerie, “Yes, Mom.”
Not only tomorrow but now every single day of my life will be spent in peace. Away from you.
“Thanks for a wonderful day. Goodnight, Aniya,” Valerie said before yawning.
“Good night, Mom.”
They both went to their rooms excited for the next day.

Aniya bolted up in her bed and stretched with a smile. She looked around for her phone because she had to send a text to Lisa.
“Didn’t I place it on the nightstand?” she looked around with a frown and then decided to go to the bathroom.
The moment she opened her bedroom door, she found Valerie standing there with her hand raised. She was probably about to knock on the door.
“Mom?” Aniya watched Valerie who was holding a large dress cover of some famous boutique in her other hand.
“Aniya!” Valerie said chirpily, “You’re awake. Now go to the bathroom and start getting ready.”
Start getting ready? Why? Today she was supposed to go to Lisa. She had already spent the whole day with her.
“But why? Are we going somewhere?” She asked in confusion.
“Yes, honey. To the church,” Valerie bent a little to kiss her daughter’s cheek, “Congratulations. You’re getting married tonight.”
