Chapter 431: 431- Anaya Jakes
After landing at Sangua Airport, the first thing Aniya did, was to head to a motel. Her job interview was lined up with Star Corps the next day and she wanted to be fully prepared for it.
Liam and Lisa had come to the airport to drop her. Now sitting in a cab, going to the motel, she rolled down the window and took out her face.
The breeze was cool against her face. Aniya closed her eyes and let it brush against her face, tangling her bob-styled hair in wild strands.
She felt alive as if the air itself was whispering promises of new beginnings.
With the loud honk of a car, she opened her eyes and took in her surroundings. The modest buildings, colorful signs advertising local eateries, and small shops.
Finally, the cab pulled up in front of a small motel with a flickering neon sign that read, “Rest Haven.”
After paying the driver, she grabbed her suitcase and stepped into the lobby. The old man sitting behind the desk with round glasses perched on his nose looked up from his register and offered her a warm smile.
“Welcome to the Rest Haven,” he took off his reading glasses, “You must be Anaya Jakes?”
For a wild moment, she wanted to negate the man and correct him … No! She was not Anaya. She was Aniya.
But this was Liam’s idea to change her name so that Alaric, Valerie, or Maxwell wouldn’t be able to trace her.
Aniya nodded at him, and he turned around to take off a key from the hook, “Room 3 is ready for you.”
“Umm. Don’t I have to pay anything in advance?” he frowned and then shook his head, “Your three-night payment is already done online.”
Ah. Bless you, Lisa.
The man motioned her to follow him. They walked down a narrow hallway with faded carpet until they reached her room.
“There you go,” he unlocked the door and pushed it open, “If you need anything I’m right at the desk.”
“Thank you,” Aniya replied softly, stepping inside.
It was a small but clean room with a single bed, a wooden desk, and a window overlooking the dimly lit street.
As soon as the man left, Aniya kicked off her shoes and dropped her bag by the door. She fell onto the bed, her body sinking into the mattress as exhaustion took over.
Staring at the ceiling she thought about her interview tomorrow with Star Corps.
What if I don’t get this job? She asked herself.
“Now don’t be a fool,” she heard Lisa’s voice in her head, “You will get the job, bitch.”
She smiled and muttered sleepily, “Thank you, my friend.”
For now, all she wanted to do was sleep.

She boarded a slightly crowded bus, her purse squeezed against her chest. Lisa was right. This life seemed so different and so good that she wanted to scream on the streets like crazy.
This was her freedom. Away from Valerie. Away from Alaric. And that jerk, Dorian Maxwell.
When she stepped off the bus, her breath hitched.
Star Corps stood there like a tall and imposing hero. Haha.
What am I even thinking?

It was a glass building that seemed to touch the clouds. Taking a deep breath, she walked through the wide glass doors.
“Wow,” the interior of the office was as stunning.
A receptionist sitting behind a sleek desk greeted her with a professional smile.
“Good morning. How can I help you?”
Hi. I’m Aniya… Anaya Jakes and I have an interview scheduled today,” she said trying to keep her voice steady.
Gosh. She was getting cold feet.
The receptionist checked the list and then nodded, “Sure, Ms. James. Please wait a moment.”

After a few minutes, Aniya was sitting in front of a middle-aged woman dressed in a neatly pressed uniform. Her hair was tied back in a tight bun. Her expression might be calm but firm.
Aniya’s hands were clasped in her lap. The woman whose name was Mrs. Eileen, was the head of the maintenance and housekeeping department. She kept shooting questions at Aniya while her sharp eyes kept scanning her.
Aniya’s heart was pounding in her chest, she could feel the sweat in her palms, but she kept answering the questions.
After that, the silence was nerve-wracking because Mrs. Eileen kept jotting down notes in a register.
Aniya was waiting for the final verdict while holding her breath. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Mrs. Eileen looked up and set her pen down. Her lips curved into a small, approving smile,
“You’ve got this job,” she said with a shrug, “You can start tomorrow.”
Relief washed over her as she let out a long breath, she had been holding.
Am I dreaming? Am I? Oh, God! I’ve got this job.
“There’s one more thing,” Mrs. Eileen continued, “Star Corps offers one-room accommodation to its staff. If you’re interested, you can apply for it. A small amount will be deducted from your salary for rent, but it’s convenient and safe.”
Aniya nodded quickly. She didn’t want to be a crybaby, but she didn’t know about the accommodation thing, “Yes, I’d like that. Thank you.”
“Great. Be here at seven sharp by tomorrow morning. I’ll arrange for the paperwork tomorrow.”
When Aniya came out of the building she jumped in excitement, “Woo hoo!” her fist raised in the air.
“I did it! Lisa! Thank you,” she spread her arms and raised her face to look at the sky. She didn’t know when those damn tears had started streaming down her face.

George Donovan was getting out of his car when he stopped. His attention was caught by a girl standing in front of the Star Corps building. She was laughing and crying at the same time, her gaze fixed on the sky. Her arms were outstretched as though she wanted to join those birds, flying up above.
He smirked and shook his head, “Another dramatic girl!” he muttered, “Kids these days!”
Yeah. Because of her frail build, she almost looked like a kid. Except that, her hip area and chest area seemed filling.
But wait a minute. Her face seemed familiar.
He didn’t realize that he was staring at her like a fool.
