Chapter 437: 437- Nosy Boss
For the next few days, she didn’t cross paths with George Donovan. She was over the moon that she at least tried fighting for herself.
After that day, Paige also never tried to bully her. Aniya had started enjoying the company of her new friends Olivia and Emma.
“So, how is he as a person?” Olivia asked her while eating her chocolate croissant during their lunch break.
The girls had decided to visit the office café that day.
“Who are you asking about?” Aniya asked her in confusion while sipping her hot mocha latte.
“She is asking about our hot CEO,” Emma bent a little to whisper near her face, “The same CEO who was concerned about your asthma,” She finished with a wink and Aniya couldn’t help the smile that was spreading across her face.
“Well! He won’t be any more concerned now,” Aniya shrugged, “He was overstepping his boundaries and now he must have learned the lesson.”
“I’m still in awe. You really said those words to him?” Olivia asked her after pushing the last piece of her croissant into her mouth.
“Yeah. I had to. I’m a grown-up and know my health better than anyone,” Aniya told them with a shrug and took another sip of her coffee.
“Uh. You’re here. You need to come with me. There is a meeting today and you need to serve snacks to our guests,” Out of nowhere, Paige was standing near their table, demanding that Aniya accompany her.
“You better talk to Mrs. Eileen, Ms. Paige,” Aniya said with a formal smile and got busy with the last few sips of her coffee.
“Umm. I don’t need anyone’s permission, Anaya Jakes. In case you want to know, I’m almost after the boss… the second in command,” Paige ran her fingers through her hair, “Mrs. Eileen will never mind that,” she said with a giggle, but Aniya had learned her lesson.
Mrs. Eileen did warn her last time not to follow anyone’s orders blindly.
“I report directly to Mrs. Eileen, Ms. Paige Fletcher. You and your boss better talk to her,” she told her with finality.
Paige wasn’t expecting this response from a noob like her. She left after stomping her feet like a bratty girl.
“You’re becoming bolder,” Emma remarked with a naughty grin, “We didn’t know there was a sassy girl hidden in there. First, it was the CEO, and now this good-for-nothing lady. I’m impressed, Anaya,”
Paige had left in frustration and now they were enjoying the last few minutes of their break.

There were still a few days to the new month and Aniya was impatiently waiting for her salary. She was in dire need of some toiletries.
Emma and Olivia were traveling to a nearby town to visit their family this weekend. They invited Aniya too, but she declined.
Feeling the limited cash in her pocket, she carefully picked up the basic stuff from the aisle in a nearby Supermarket. Because after spending this money, she wouldn’t be left with anything.
“One soap, one shampoo, and a pack of pads,” she was quickly calculating it in her head, “a little bit of the toothpaste is still there…” She kept walking through the aisles.
She always stuck to the basic stuff for herself because Valerie never let her spend on her personal stuff.
“No need to use shampoo or soap daily. It dies your skin, anyways,” she used to remind Aniya.
This time when my salary arrives, it will be the first time I’ll be shopping for myself. She thought excitedly.
She again counted the leftover cash in her pocket. She was badly craving for this packet of crisps.
“Ok. Maybe I should try one,” she placed it in the shopping basket and made her way to the cash counter. Thankfully the queue wasn’t that long.
She waited for her turn, thinking like an innocent child about how to finish the crisps packet,
“I might eat it in the evening before dinner or maybe tomorrow after breakfast. What if I stay awake and watch the movie in the living room of the hostel along with other girls? But then I’ll have to share it with them.”

She kept planning for the single packet as if it weren’t crisps but a precious gold bar.
“Fifty-six dollars,” the man at the cash counter told her.
Wait what? She blinked in confusion.
“What is the cost of this,” she showed him the packet, “I thought it was less than twenty.”
“No. It’s a branded one,” he told her in a bored voice, “The staff must have forgotten to replace the new prices. Should I place it in your shopping bag or not?” he asked her a little impatiently.
Chewing her lower lip, Aniya shook her head, “N-no, thanks,” she paid for the rest of the stuff and left the store.
It was just a pack of snacks so why was she feeling so anxious about it?
“it’s ok,” she muttered under her breath, “I’ll buy it once I get the paycheck.”
Tightening the lapels of her jacket on her chest, she started walking when someone called her name from behind, “Hey, miss. Miss Anaya Jakes!”
Aniya stopped and then turned slowly at the familiar voice.
“No, it can’t be him!” she told herself and squeezed her eyes, thinking she was imagining it. Taking long strides, he was heading towards her, holding that same pack of crisps.
“Here,” he extended his hand, “It’s yours.”
Instead of taking it, she kept staring at his handsome face. One thing she had to admit… he never gave her those unsettling vibes like Dorian Maxwell or Alaric James.
He had stepped back when she warned him the last time and never came after her. Nor did he try to show his authority to her in the office.
“Look. I can buy my own crisps. It’s just that I didn’t bring enough cash…” she trailed off when his hand gently pressed the packet into hers.
“It’s okay,” he said softly, gesturing towards the pack, “This is just a pack of crisps. Return me the money once you get your salary.”
“Huh?”
“Yeah. Pay me back later,” when he saw she didn’t hold it, he tore open the pack with a sigh then and there and pulled out a crisp to pop into his mouth, “Umm. It’s fresh. Try it.”
Reluctantly, Aniya held the pack. He was making her feel like they were old friends meeting after such a long time.
She peeked inside the pack and then took out a piece, “You’re quite stubborn, Mr. George Donovan.”
She remarked and took out some more from the pack.
“I know,” he started walking beside her with a faint smile, “So, how’s your job going …aside from your nosy boss, I mean?” he asked her with a straight face, making her cough slightly in surprise.
