Chapter 470: 470- For George’s Sake
Paige stepped into the room, smoothing her blouse as if she had done nothing wrong.
“Hello,” she greeted them with an over-brightened smile, “I was just here to get some extra paper for my printer,” she explained herself, trying too hard to sound casual.
Aniya could see faint creases on Mrs. Eileen’s forehead, but she stayed silent.
Aniya’s stomach twisted. Like Mrs. Eileen, she was sure that Paige had heard every word of their discussion
Mrs. Eileen held Paige’s gaze for a moment longer as if assessing her soul before nodding, “Well. You better be quick, Ms. Fletcher.”
Paige bobbed her head and raised her hands that were holding a stack of papers, “It’s already here,” she said breezily.
The moment Paige was gone, Aniya released a breath she didn’t realize she was holding. Mrs. Eileen shook her head before turning her attention back to Aniya.
“Go home and think hard, Anaya. Let me know what your decision is,” she paused briefly tapping her fingers lightly on the desk, “You better make up your mind and let me know so that I can inform Mr. Donovan beforehand. We don’t want someone else to approach him before you,” she finished meaningfully.
Aniya was aware of what she was talking about. If Paige had heard their conversation, then she could convey it to Mr. Donovan by using her twisted version.

Aniya went to her locker to check if she had forgotten anything important. After opening the locker door, she went still when found a pack of crisps lying there.
Gliding her tongue over her lips, she picked it up and kissed it, “George Donovan… Stop it!” she said softly to the pack as if it was George himself, “Stop making me fall for you more. I’m already too far gone.”
She picked up the packet and left the locker room with a heavy heart, “Don’t worry. I’ll talk to you before leaving. This time I’ll leave like a mature adult, not a crybaby.”

When Aniya was walking back to her hostel, she felt sad. The pack of crisps was clutched to her chest as if it were the most precious thing in her life.
The wind was whipping through her hair and Aniya had to close her eyes to avoid dust particles from going inside her eyes.
“ANAYA!”
Someone called her name from behind, but she didn’t turn, thinking she might be imagining it. Still, she glanced over her shoulder and found Paige hurrying towards her, struggling to keep her skirt from flying up in the heavy wind.
Despite what had happened in the office earlier, Aniya couldn’t suppress the giggle bubbling up in her throat.
When Paige reached her, she was almost breathless, “Phew! I’ve been calling you but this wind…urgh…” she grabbed Aniya’s hand and started walking beside her, “I’m sorry.”
Aniya blinked in surprise, “What?”
Paige let out a sigh, “Look. I know I made a mistake. But I didn’t eavesdrop on purpose… I swear. You two were talking, and I just happened to be there… and I overheard… Anaya…” she threw her arm over Aniya’s shoulders as if they were buddies, “I was really there to collect those papers.”
Aniya wasn’t sure she believed her, but she simply nodded with a small smile, “It’s okay,” she clicked her tongue, “I know you were there for your tasks. You are a busy girl after all.”
They walked in silence before Paige spoke again, “Umm… you know?… I can help you find a job… if you want…”
Aniya turned her head to look at Paige’s face, but she couldn’t find anything evil there, “There’s a five-star hotel, looking for staff for its newly opened restaurant. They pay their waitresses really well, and chances are that you’d earn good tips too.”
Aniya’s steps slowed as she turned to Paige, her eyes had gone wide, “Really? You’d do that for me?”
Paige nodded, “Of course. Mrs. Eileen was right when she said that you’re hard-working. This might be the opportunity you’ve been waiting for.”
Aniya couldn’t believe her luck.
Before moving to Sangua, this was what she had been doing, and was an expert in it.

“Can you take me tonight?” she asked Paige excitedly.
“We can go now if you want,” she glanced at her watch, “Mr. Donovan is out of the city so I don’t have much to do at the office anyway.”

“I’ve got a new job?” Olivia and Emma were discussing some viral videos when Aniya dropped the bomb.
“What!” Emma’s voice raised in shock while Olivia thought she heard her wrong.
“What are you saying?” Olivia flung her phone aside without a second thought and jumped on the bed near her, “Where’re you going?”
“Nowhere!” she laughed looking at their serious faces, “I will stay in Sangua City. This five-star hotel is providing me accommodation with a better package.”
Emma’s mouth was hung open at the revelation, “You found another job?” she whispered, and there was a hint of betrayal in her eyes, “and you didn’t even bother to tell us?”
Aniya hurriedly held her by her shoulders, “Don’t be stupid, Em. I found it today… this afternoon,” she turned her face to Olivia, “Trust me, Olive. I just saw the ad and walked inside for the interview. I didn’t know they would appoint me on spot,” she hid the part where Paige helped her with the interview meetup.
Her friends had gone quiet after that.
“P… please … don’t hate me,” Aniya’s voice turned teary, “I swear, I love you both.”
Olivia heaved a long sigh, “Don’t be stupid. We love you too and you know that. But why? Like I know you have a right to a better life, but this is very sudden. Like… to me it seems, you made this rash decision because of your ex-boyfriend.”
“He was not my boyfriend,” Aniya tried to argue but Olivia shook her head.
“You liked him, you both were into each other. Now you broke up with him and suddenly all this…” she waved her hands in confusion.
“Anaya!” Emma’s voice was laced with concern, “Is he … I mean your ex… is he bullying you? If you are in danger, then we can help you.”
Aniya chuckled at that, “No, silly. There isn’t any danger. I just want some change in life.”
She raised her shoulder and tried to smile but her friends didn’t look convinced. Now there was one more person who needed to know about her decision. She was dreading the meeting, but she had to do it.
For her sake.
For George’s sake.
