Chapter 471: 471- Too Familiar
When her phone buzzed, she checked it, only to find a message from the bank, stating that her salary had been credited.
She was planning to reach out to her parents and see if they would accept her. What if they wouldn’t believe her?
Nah! Right now, she didn’t want to think about it.
No matter if they accept her or not. She would always love them.
She needed to complete her one-month notice period at Star Corps before joining her new job. George was still out of the city, and she had already submitted her resignation to Mrs. Eileen.
“I’ll miss you, girl!” Emma said with a pout while eating her cheeseburger. They were having lunch in the office café and Aniya was thanking secretly that George was not in the office.
She needed to spend her maximum time peacefully here.
Just one more month to go.
But maybe the God had other plans.
Olivia was halfway through her sandwich and Emma was stirring her iced latte absentmindedly when suddenly Paige appeared.
“Mind if I join you, girls?” Paige asked, flashing a sweet smile that didn’t reach her eyes.
“Sure,” Aniya exchanged a quick glance with Olivia and Emma, “should I order something for you?” she asked Paige with a polite smile, trying to avoid eye contact with her friends.
She was aware of their dislike for Paige, but she couldn’t refuse her flatly.
“No, it’s fine. I just ordered a donut and a coffee,” Paige then turned her attention to Emma and Olivia, “So… ready to say goodbye to your friend? Because she is more than ready to take up the new job.”
Olivia’s sandwich almost slipped from her fingers as her eyes darted to Aniya. Nobody was supposed to know about Aniya’s resignation.
Except her friends and Mrs. Eileen.
Then how come this girl knew so much as if she was Anaya’s friend?
Before Olivia could snap back, Paige picked a sugar packet from the table and twirled it between her fingers, “The manager whose name is Larson was quite impressed by her confidence,” She said with a chuckle.
Emma who was stirring her straw in her coffee, stopped. Olivia also leaned back, crossing her arms. They had those pointed looks on their faces that said… really?
Aniya had told them like it was a random walk-in interview. She never mentioned that Paige had a hand in it.
She felt dirty after getting exposed.
A server came to their table with Paige’s donut and coffee in a brown paper bag.
“See you around, guys,” with the same smug smile on her face, she picked up her bag and got on her feet.
“There was no need to hide it from us,” After Paige left, Emma told her quietly and stood up from her chair.
Aniya held Emma’s hand in desperation, “It’s not what you think, Emma,”
“Don’t worry,” Emma said, “I’m not mad at you. Just need time and some space,” she freed her hand gently from her grip and walked away, leaving behind her half cup of coffee.
“Yeah. We aren’t mad,” Olivia said with a sigh and left in haste. Aniya was sitting alone at that table.
“Damn. Seems like I’m losing everyone. Lisa, George, Olive, and Em. I already lost my family a long time ago. And now this,” she looked at her half-eaten burger and then slid the plate away.
She had lost her appetite.

Due to the rough weather, she had started taking her inhaler at least once a day. Olivia and Emma were still giving her cold shoulder, and deep down Aniya knew that nothing was normal anymore.
George had still not returned from his trip, and Aniya had this idea that he must be trying to contact her through messages and calls. But she had blocked him.
By now she was sure that Paige must have informed him about her resignation.
While wandering aimlessly on the footpaths, she walked past an upscale boutique. The shimmering dresses in the window caught her eye.
I’ll just check the prices and come out; she told herself.
She stepped inside and closed her eyes when heard a gentle hum of music playing in the background.
Oh! Heavens!
A salesgirl approached her with a professional smile, “Welcome, ma’am. How can I help you today?”
Aniya hesitated for a moment before deciding to be honest, “I… I’m just here to have a look,” of course, they should have guessed by my appearance that I can’t afford it.
She was bracing herself, expecting the girl to turn cold, just like they showed in the movies where salespeople only cared about customers who could spend.
But this girl…
Her smile remained friendly, “It’s perfectly fine, ma’am,” she motioned to a corner, “You can also check there where we keep our discounted items. You might end up buying something.”
Aniya almost laughed at the idea. Even the discounted section wasn’t for her, she was sure of it.
As she drifted through the racks, running her fingers over the fine fabric, she heard someone talking from a few feet away.
A guy and a woman.
“This must be the twentieth shop in Sangua City, and you aren’t liking anything, Mom!” A small smile tugged at Aniya’s lips at the exasperation in his voice.
“Ah. Don’t be a jerk, sweetheart,” the woman scolded him lightly, but Aniya could feel the love in her voice, “I need to find a white gown for this upcoming gala.”
Aniya turned a little and peeked from the dresses. The boy who must be around her age, let out a dramatic groan before pressing a quick kiss to his mom’s cheek, “Fine, you owe me dinner tonight.”
The woman scoffed, “Nah! Tonight, it’s on you…”
Something about the way they were talking to each other made her uncomfortable. Their faces seemed familiar.
Too familiar.
The woman was beautiful and had a graceful aura. She was wearing a navy blue, A-line dress with sheer sleeves that had delicate silver embroidery.
The boy had his hands in his pockets and looked handsome in a tailored black sweater over dark grey slacks.
Aniya’s heart slammed against her ribs when the realization hit her like a crashing wave.
“A…Alex!”
“M… Mommy!
