Chapter 494: 494- Moved On
Aniya was sitting in the Civil Registry office along with her parents. She had expected the office to be clean and tidy, like they showed in movies, but it smelled of old files and fresh ink.
Sitting between Marissa and Rafael, she watched the officer as he tapped a form with his pen. His gaze shifted to each one of them before settling on her.
“So, Miss…” he glanced at the paper, “You were registered as Abigail before your… umm… disappearance…and after that, you were given the name Aniya Jakes. Am I right?”
Aniya nodded her head.
“Hmm,” He narrowed his eyes as he ran his gaze through the old records on his PC, “The decision is yours—do you want to go back to Abigail, or should it be Aniya?”
Aniya hesitated for a moment. There was too much attachment to the name Aniya James. It had been her identity for most of her life.
While the name Abigail?
It might feel distant. However, unlike Aniya, the name didn’t carry scars, those horrible whispers, and those traumas.
Marissa’s hand covered hers that was placed on her lap, “Sweetheart! No matter what you choose, you are still our daughter,” she assured her softly.
Rafael nodded, “No pressure, princess. Just do what you feel is right. Your happiness means more to us.”
“Aniya might be close to my heart, but it also reminds me of all those hardships I went through,” She bit her lip, “Abigail…” she looked up at her mom, “I’ll go with Abigail. The Aniya I was, I already left her behind. The person sitting with you is someone new. So, Abigail should be the one.”
The officer looked up above his reading glasses, “You don’t have to rush, miss. Take your time. You can come to me some other day.”
Aniya closed her eyes briefly, then met his gaze, “I have decided, sir,” she told him in loud and clear words, “I want to go with Abigail Sinclair.”
Rafael’s arm squeezed her to his side, to offer her, his silent support.
The officer noted it down without another word. After taking a few more details from her, he entered a few things into his computer and then stamped the form with a thud.
It was done.
Now she was officially Abigail Sinclair. The lost heiress of the Sinclair family.

“When you were little, you loved having Chinese,” Marissa told her after the waiter had taken their orders.
After the Registry office, they had come to a nearby Chinese restaurant that was Marissa’s favorite.
“How about…” she turned to her husband and held his arm, “We have a big celebration party and announce to everyone that our Abi is back.”
Abigail could see the wetness in her mother’s eyes.
“Not now, Strawberry,” Rafael kissed her cheek, “Let the police complete their investigation. Announcing it means we are drawing unwanted attention. We don’t want to alert Valerie and his minion. Let Abi have a breather.”
Being called Abi by her father was indeed a breather.
She couldn’t believe her luck. Just last week, she had nothing. Not even a roof or a job. And now?
She smiled when the waiter started placing the dishes on the table.
Abi picked up the chopsticks and rolled them between her fingers, “Did I really like Chinese?” she wasn’t sure.
“You were crazy about dumplings, love.” Marissa picked up a dumpling with her chopsticks, blowing on it before offering it to her daughter.
Rafael reached out for his glass of hot water that had just been filled by the waiter, “Do try this sweet and sour chicken. I’m sure you’ll like it.”
Abigail nibbled on the chicken and chewed it slowly, “Umm hmm, it’s good,” she swallowed it and saw Marissa placing her chopsticks down, “I don’t remember it, but I want to try everything I can. Being a food critic isn’t an easy job.”

“Mm!” Rafael hummed in agreement, “Good point. You need a phone with a better camera quality.”
“No! You just gave me one, it’s brand new,”
“That was for Anaya. I want to gift it to my daughter,” he said firmly, and Abigail pressed her lips, trying to control the smile.
She wasn’t used to it, but they were spoiling her.
“Daddy!” she called him when he had just gotten done with his food.
“Hmm?”
“Can you find my friends for me? I don’t know how they are doing. They helped me so much, but I am not able to contact them.”
Rafael gave his daughter a reassuring look and then cupped her cheek from across the table, “Don’t worry. I can hire the best investigator for you. I hope you find them soon.”
Abigail couldn’t wait to meet her friends. Once they were here, she would ask Rafael to arrange for their jobs, too.

After dropping Abigail home, Marissa adjusted the seatbelt as the car started moving smoothly through the traffic, “Ariel told me that she’s already sent several messages to George, informing him about Abigail. But he isn’t responding.”
“What can be the reason?” Rafael kept his eyes on the road, holding the steering wheel.
“I don’t know,” she shrugged and then shifted a little in her seat, “Maybe he’s busy, or …” she sighed, “I’m planning to visit his office tomorrow. What if he is stuck in some problem? I should check on him.”
Rafael tilted his head briefly to eye his wife, “Just don’t step in blindly, love.”
“I don’t know but… I’ve got a bad feeling about this,” She hoped George was alright. Whenever Marissa visited Sangua, he always met her regularly.
Even Rafael used to get jealous of those visits, and she enjoyed teasing her husband. However, this time, it was different.
You need to meet your childhood friend, George. I always tried to set you up with different girls, and now, when the love of your life is back, you aren’t available anymore.
Or have you already moved on?
Even if he had moved on, she didn’t have any problem with it. She just wanted happiness for Abi and George, no matter what they choose.
