Chapter 498: 498- Obvious
Abi lay on her bed, staring at the ceiling, but sleep wouldn’t come. Her mind had been too restless since George left.
No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t stop thinking about him. She met him after so many days and could sense how weak he looked. His dark circles were visible on his face, and he kept brushing his hands through his hair.
The way he hugged her, the way his voice trembled when he spoke her name…
It kept playing on a loop in her head.
Did he really look for her? She was aware that Olivia and Emma must be worried, but George…
She didn’t give him any hope when they met last time in Mrs. Eileen’s office.
Last night, he tried to talk to her after dinner, but she had made sure that he never got the chance. Not because she didn’t want to, but because she didn’t know what to say or how to react.
She had tried her best to stay close to her family, pretending she was busy for any conversation alone with him.
A soft knock at the door made her jolt a little. Before she could respond, the door creaked open, and Ariel peeked in.
Her face reminded Abi of what her sister did at the dinner table, and she couldn’t suppress the smile.
“Are you sleeping?” She asked, though she didn’t even wait for Abigail’s reply and stepped inside.
Abigail sighed before mumbling, “I’m trying to …”
Ariel grinned as she plopped onto the bed beside her, “Liar!” she said softly, “You were thinking about George, weren’t you?”
Abi’s body seemed to stiffen a little, “What? No. Why would I?”
Ariel arched a brow at her sister, “Hmm. Interesting.”
Abigail pretended to be unfazed and laid back with a shrug, “Meeting him was good… nothing special. As my ex-boss, I almost know enough about him.”
Ariel narrowed her eyes as if trying to read her sister, “Really? Nothing special?”
“Umm hmm. Nothing special,” she nodded, “I led a very stressful life, Ariel. Got practical in childhood when the kids of my age were discussing fairytales and social media,” she intertwined her fingers on her belly and looked at her sister, “I do remember George, but I don’t feel that link with him anymore. People change. Their preferences change,” she tried to justify herself.
Ariel’s lips curled into a knowing smile, “That’s… that’s great!” she chirped, clapping her hands together.
Abigail smirked and ruffled her sister’s hair. Sometimes, she felt as if leading a different life in different circumstances had made her more mature than Ariel.
Ariel leaned in, lowering her voice as if she were sharing a juicy secret, “Now I can make him my boyfriend for real. Without any guilt.”
Abigail’s heart skipped a beat, “What?”
“Yeah. He is hot, rich, and clearly a complete package. What’s not to like in him?” she sighed dramatically, “I’ve decided …. That George Sinclair is my next boyfriend.”
Abigail felt something tighten in her chest, but she quickly masked it with a small laugh, “Good luck with that.”
Ariel flipped her hair over her shoulder in style, “Oh. Just wait and watch.”
The small action reminded Abigail of Valerie. The resemblance was uncanny.

Abi gave her a tight-lipped smile and then opened her mouth before closing it again.
“What?” Ariel noticed the small action, “Shoot it, girl. We’re sisters. No more secrets between us. Ok?”
Abi chuckled, “Umm. I just wanted to know… I thought you two were engaged, right?”
“Not yet,” Ariel hopped off the bed, winking again before skipping towards the door, “But I might be if luck will be on my side.”
So, they were not engaged as those office colleagues had said. But Ariel did have feelings for him.
Abigail exhaled after Ariel left. She gripped her blanket and closed her eyes, trying to sleep.
“Luck is on everyone’s side, Ariel,” she thought with a humorless smile, “Except me, of course.”

Abigail stood at the hostel entrance for a moment, taking it all in. It felt strange to be back here. This was the place she had once been desperate to stay in.
She was no more a despo, who needed a job and a roof over her head. Now, she could give away hundreds of jobs and hostel rooms to others at the snap of her fingers.
She wasn’t there for her documents as she didn’t need them anymore, but she felt it was ethical to clear out her belongings, assuming they might need the room for the next tenant.
Or maybe they had already packed her stuff in a carton to pass on the room to someone else.
Reaching Mrs. Eileen’s office, she knocked twice.
“Come in,” came the usual brisk response.
With a smile, she pushed the door open. Mrs. Eileen was flipping through a file. The moment she looked up and saw Abi in the doorway, she went rigid.
Her face drained of color.
“Anaya,” she whispered, barely believing her eyes, “Where were you? Are you alright?”
The next moment, she shot up from her seat and rushed forward, wrapping Abigail in a tight hug.
Abi blinked, caught off guard. She hadn’t expected this reaction from Mrs. Eileen, “Thank God you are back. Mr. Donovan went bonkers while looking for you.”
“Yes… umm… what?” No matter how hard she tried to forget him, every person used to remind her of that man.
Mrs. Eileen pulled back, scanning her face like she wanted to make sure that she was real.
“Do you have any idea how worried we were? You just vanished, my dear,” Mrs. Eileen exhaled, shaking her head, “Sit down.”
She went back to her seat and flashed her a smile. That was when her eyes ran on Abigail, who was wearing a high-end branded dress, “W…we thought something terrible happened to you,” Mrs. Eileen tried to smile.
“No, Mrs. Eileen,” Abigail gave a small smile, “I’m alright. I just came to get my stuff.”
“Your stuff?”
Abi nodded, “I assume my room must be given to someone else by now, and I don’t mind…” she quickly explained, “I just wanted to take whatever was left before it gets thrown,” she finished with a chuckle.
“Your room,” The hostel warden bit her lip, “It’s still the same, Anaya. Unoccupied.”
Abigail’s brows furrowed, “What do you mean? Nobody needed that room anymore?”
The older woman sighed, leaning back in her chair, “Your things are still there. We had strict orders from Mrs. Donovan not to let anyone use your room and keep it as it is.”
Uh-huh. George! What are you doing, sweetheart? Making it obvious to everyone? Huh?
