Chapter 132: Now That’s a Lot of Damage!
Now That’s a Lot of Damage!
‘Of course, we’re fighting already.’ Titus resisted the urge to sigh. He had barely managed to arrange all the soldiers and assign them various tasks before an alarm rang out, signifying the approach of a large attacking force.
Luckily, his men were all well-trained and capable of responding to rapid events.
Titus made his way to the outer walls and looked straight ahead. Behind him, soldiers were running around, going to their various stations.
People mounted the various sets of equipment on the walls and towers, and those soldiers who specialized in close combat gathered at the base of the wall in a neat formation, a set of rules in the fortress activating to buff their overall stats.
Far ahead in the plain of white snow, Titus narrowed his eyes slightly as the threat was slowly starting to become clear.
They were… rabbits.
Yes, the threat that got the attention of the entire fortress was a swarm of rabbits. But they weren’t normal rabbits. Not by a long shot.
The smallest among them was easily as tall as a fully grown human. Their bodies were covered in robust muscles, and there was a single white horn on their foreheads, while their eyes were an ominous red.
Not to mention their numbers. Titus only took a cursory glance and judged them to be ten thousand at the very least. And each rabbit seemed to be at the king rank, which was a terrifying thought in itself.
Titus, or pretty much anyone here, would have found such numbers daunting, since before, they all considered King-level beasts to be high-level targets that required an elite team of individuals as well as lots of planning before they considered taking it out.
So, seeing thousands of them coming at you with intense bloodlust would have sent shivers down the spine of anyone who saw it. But that was before.
Now, even one of the weaker soldiers could handle a dozen or so King-level monsters by themselves, with that number jumping exponentially with the strength gap between certain soldiers. And that’s not even mentioning the various equipment the fortress was filled with that would be used to defend the place.
“What do you reckon, commander?” At some point, his second in command, Raya, had appeared next to him, and Titus glanced at her before saying.
“It seems doable.” That was all he said. There wasn’t an ounce of fear or worry in his tone. Only unbridled confidence.
Raya nodded quietly as she seemed to think so as well. Which made Titus smile a little. She was quite gentle in the way she spoke and behaved, but she also always spoke her mind. It was an interesting contrast, but one he found endearing.
Titus then sighed and closed his eyes for a moment. Being the commander-in-charge of this fortress, he had a certain level of authority over it, which allowed him to do various things. From activating certain enchantments remotely to teleporting from place to place without consuming his energy.
However, the function he was making use of right now was his ability to telepathically address his soldiers from anywhere within the fortress.
Specifically, he addressed the soldiers who were handling the magical artillery placed a bit deeper within the fortress.
He reopened his eyes and stared at the approaching hoard.
‘Adjust your aim.’ Titus addressed calmly, not bothering to give coordinates as the artillery could do that by itself.
‘Get ready…’ He watched the mass of rabbits rushing forward with crazed eyes that wanted nothing more than to devour him and his soldiers alive.
He waited until the distance between them, and the wall was 10 kilometers, then he commanded softly.
“Fire.” The moment the words left his mouth, there was a series of thunderous noises that occurred with a brief interval between each sound.
Everything was silent for a moment, then came the whistling.
A shrill whistle came from above, rapidly getting louder and louder, creating an ominous atmosphere.
And then the explosions came.
One might wonder, at what point did conventional weaponry turn useless against beasts? The answer to that was fairly simple. When the beast was capable of using some form of magic. In such a case, the only thing that could hurt them in that scenario was magic.
However, this came in many forms. Magic varied, after all. Though it usually boiled down to magic that could be used in close quarters and magic that could be used at range. The means of which also varied.
In Titus’ world, people mostly used cold or ranged weapons. Then, there were siege artifacts like cannons and magical formations. But those were hard to procure due to the difficulty in making them as well as the materials being expensive.

This could be said to be even more prominent in the case of the former, as while magical formations were difficult to create, as long as one had a good enough formation master, they could keep creating the formations. On the other hand, magic cannons required special materials to be created, and there was the case of their ammunition, how portable they could be, and so on.
Which wasn’t to say that they were useless. They were still very devastating when it came to warfare. One of the reasons the Dwarves were so feared before was because of their ability to create powerful weapons and artifacts, and they enjoyed their magic cannons greatly.
Still, not everyone was capable of producing them with the same frequency as the Dwarves who not only had the skill but due to their location, also had the materials readily available.
That’s why, despite magic being very prominent, things like modern weaponry in combat-based operations were rarely seen.
But it was different here.
Not only was the Primordial Expanse filled with materials that could regenerate over time, but there was also the forge that could produce these things easily. Meaning that the material and manpower issue wasn’t that big of a deal, and Christopher could create all these things with ease.
That’s why the artillery was so devastating.
A series of loud and powerful explosions happened almost simultaneously as the magic-powered artillery shells hit the ground with obscene force before detonating.
The explosions reached hundreds of meters in height, and snow and mangled rabbit parts were thrown high into the sky. The deafening noise temporarily drowned out the sound made by the approaching tide, and when the snow cleared, the devastation could be seen clearly.
Multiple deep craters could be seen, their edges dotted with mangled rabbit corpses, and those were the ‘lucky’ ones. The unlucky ones had been eviscerated the instant the explosions took place.
Titus couldn’t help but feel a bit excited at this scene. He’d seen the artillery being used during one of the many training exercises the soldiers did. And he found their power to be fantastical. Though for the most part, the ones using them usually just trained how quickly they could reload the weapons and adjust their aim. So while he had seen the explosions before, he had never seen just how capable they were when it came to killing the enemy.
He had never doubted its strength, but seeing as how each shell most likely eradicated a few hundred rabbits, he couldn’t help but feel his heart race.
Granted, despite the first salvo doing the damage it did, it didn’t even create a dent in the swarm of rabbits, and very soon, they had marched over the corpses of their fallen brethren, completely undeterred by their deaths.
It would take a lot more to completely clear out the tide.
And so they would give them a lot more.
Titus didn’t need to give the command again as another round of thunderous sounds erupted from within the fortress, and then another round of devastating explosions rang out, killing even more rabbits.
Only now, there was virtually no pause between the artillery cannons firing, as not even a second later, another salvo had been sent forward, and another, and another. And soon, a cacophony of thunderous explosions filled the air.
The ground shook constantly from their combined force as if there was a light earthquake shaking the area. But everyone here was too strong to lose their balance.
With the help of the cannons, the vast tide had been halted temporarily. The death toll of the rabbits crossed a thousand in moments.
However, their numbers were truly astounding, and slowly, soke rabbits managed to break through the explosions and rush forward. However, they didn’t get too close before one of the snipers in the sniper nests just below the rail guns in the towers took them out with uncanny efficiency.
Speaking of the rail guns, Titus couldn’t help but look at the behemoths with shining eyes. He had asked Christopher about them personally as he had never seen such a construct before, and Christopher’s answer set his heart as a male ablaze.
‘Those things? They’re simple, really. Just massive chunks of metal accelerated to absurd speeds, turning anything in its path into mist. And with magic added to the mist, well, there are no tricks, just pure, unrelenting destruction.’ That statement made Titus instantly fall in love.
