Chapter 106: Dylan, wake up!
Dylan yanked the steering wheel to the side. The tires screeched against the asphalt as the car swerved uncontrollably. It skidded off the road and slammed into a tree with a sickening thud. The force of the impact sent him hurtling forward, but the airbag deployed just in time, cushioning the blow.
Dylan winced, struggling to catch his breath as the airbag pressed against him. The acrid smell of smoke and burnt rubber filled his nose. He pushed against the deflated airbag, groaning as he unclipped his seatbelt. Stumbling out of the wreckage, he fell to his knees on the hard ground, his head spinning violently.
Reaching into his pocket, he managed to pull out his phone. He dialed Justin with his trembling fingers. As the call connected, he rasped, “I… I met with an accident. Come quickly.”
“Where are you?” Justin’s alarmed voice rang through the line.
“I am…” Dylan tried to reply, but his vision blurred, and his voice faltered as his strength gave out.
“Hello? Mr. Brooks? Hello!” Justin’s voice grew frantic as Dylan’s voice stopped coming suddenly. His stomach churned with panic. “Shit!” He ran out of the office.

“Is Dylan not coming?” Lilianna asked, surprised to see that Dylan wasn’t back yet. She had been looking forward to a family dinner and was confused by his absence. “Why did he leave so suddenly?”
She glanced toward the empty doorway, half expecting Dylan to stroll in.
Ava hesitated, the memory of their argument earlier replaying in her mind. She couldn’t bring herself to admit that she had driven him away with her harsh words. Lowering her gaze, she mumbled, “He got an urgent call from the office. Probably something important came up.”
She felt guilty for lying. “Don’t worry. You should eat first and rest early.” She looked up at her, forcing a smile as she tried to dispel her worry.
Lilianna sighed loudly, disappointment flickering in her eyes. “Tell me honestly: does he come home late like this often?”
Ava managed a weak smile, trying to sound casual. “Not really. He usually comes home on time. But sometimes, there are urgent matters to deal with. You know how dedicated he is to his work.”
“I know.” Lilianna nodded in reluctant understanding. “He has always been that way—workaholic to the core.” She forced a smile, brushing away her disappointment. “Alright. Let him work. It’s his loss. We’ll have fun without him. Now, let’s enjoy dinner.”
Her cheerful tone did little to ease the gnawing guilt in Ava’s chest. She nodded and picked up her fork, trying to focus on the meal. Lilianna chatted happily between bites, but Ava barely heard her.
Her thoughts were with Dylan. She replayed the way he had stormed out and the way he had held his head as if he were in pain.
‘Is he okay?’ She thought of calling him and asking him to come back.
At the hospital…
It was nearing midnight, and Dylan still hadn’t woken up, which worried Justin.
He turned to the doctor, frustration evident on his face. “Why isn’t he waking up? You said it was just a mild concussion.”
The doctor shook his head, his expression troubled. “It is. Physically, nothing is preventing him from regaining consciousness. He should have woken up by now. But for some reason, he hasn’t. We’ll need to run additional tests to understand what is happening.”
Justin’s jaw tightened as he shot back, “Then do something to wake him up.”
“We’re doing all we can,” the doctor replied. “But sometimes, the patient’s mind resists regaining consciousness. All we can do is wait and monitor him closely. I’m sorry.” With that, the doctor left the room.
Justin turned to look at Dylan, his worry intensifying. The sight of his normally commanding boss so vulnerable made a lump form in his throat. To make the situation worse, Dylan’s phone rang yet again.
“What do I do now?” he mumbled as he looked at Ava’s name on the screen.
He had been ignoring her calls for hours, hoping Dylan would wake up and answer her himself. But now, Justin realized he couldn’t keep dodging her anymore. With a sigh, he reached for the phone and swiped to answer.
“Hello?”
“Justin?” Ava was a bit surprised when she heard Justin’s voice. “Why are you answering Dylan’s phone? I’ve been trying to reach him for hours. Is he still at work?”
“Actually…” He sighed. “He is at the hospital.”

Ava felt her heart sinking. Despite her anger at Dylan and her determination to keep her distance, worry bubbled up uncontrollably, just as it always had. “What happened? Why is he in the hospital?”
“It was just a small accident—a mild concussion and a few scratches,” Justin said casually, clearly trying to downplay the situation. “Nothing serious. He is resting now. I’ll have him call you when he wakes up tomorrow.”
“I am coming.”
“No, no, there is no need for that,” Justin quickly interjected. “I’m here with him. Everything is under control,” he assured her, but his own stomach was sinking in worry. He had no idea when Dylan would wake up.
Ava was in a dilemma. Part of her wanted to rush to Dylan’s side. At the same time, she knew her sudden departure it would alert Lilianna. Ava had no idea how to explain Dylan’s condition without upsetting her further.
“Are you sure?” she asked hesitantly.
“Yes, I’ll take care of him.”
Ava let out a small sigh, thinking of going to the hospital first thing in the morning.

The nightmare again engulfed Dylan. This time, it was different—no faceless woman was haunting him as before. Instead, he found himself standing in front of his parents’ framed photograph, the one he had in the mansion. His lips moved, murmuring words he could barely hear himself.
Dylan’s eyeballs moved rapidly, his eyelashes trembling. It was as though he was trying to wake up, but some invisible force seemed to trap him in the nightmare.
“Everything went according to the plan.” He heard him murmur. “But why do I feel this sadness? I wanted them to suffer, to feel the pain I endured. But whenever I see her cry… my heart hurts.”
His expression twisted with conflict as he lowered his gaze to the divorce papers in his hands. “I think I have fallen in love with her. What do I do now?”
Suddenly, the sound of hurried footsteps echoed through the nightmare, and Justin appeared, panic etched across his face. “Mr. Brooks!” he exclaimed, thrusting a folder toward Dylan. “Mr. Williams was innocent. He didn’t kill your parents.”
Dylan’s brow furrowed as he took the folder, flipping it open. But as his eyes scanned the documents, the words swam before him, the letters floating and blurring. He strained to read but couldn’t understand a word.
“Take a look…” Justin held up his phone.
Dylan squinted at the screen, his brow creasing as he tried to focus. The video played, but the images were a chaotic jumble, the sounds distorted and faint. He could see nothing, nor could hear anything properly.
“Uh…” he groaned.
Then, faintly, a woman’s voice broke through the haze. “Dylan, wake up!”
