Chapter 107: He is innocent.
Dylan struggled, his body tensing, his mind clawing desperately to escape the nightmare’s grip. He groaned again, his limbs twitching as though he were fighting an invisible force. But the nightmare’s hold was unyielding, keeping him trapped in its depths.
In the next scene, he saw Ava lying limp in the pool of blood. “No, no—this can’t be happening!” he cried, dropping to his knees and pulling her into his arms. “You can’t leave me, Ava. Stay with me. Please, stay with me.” His tears fell freely. “Nothing will happen to you. I’ll take you to the hospital.”
He carried her out of the house and drove straight to the hospital. But the moment he arrived; the crushing blow came.
“I’m sorry,” the doctor said gravely. “She didn’t make it.”
Dylan staggered backward, his mind refusing to process the words. “No, no…she can’t be dead. She can’t leave me.”
The next words pierced him even deeper. “She was pregnant.”
Dylan’s world tilted. “Pregnant?” he choked out. “She was pregnant… and yet she… she killed herself.” His knees buckled, and he sank to the floor, clutching his head as sobs tore through him. “I forced her – into this. I killed her.”
“Wake up for God’s sake.”
Suddenly, a violent jolt to his shoulder snapped him out of the spiral. The scene shattered, and he gasped, his lungs heaving as he shot upright in the bed. Tears pooled in the corners of his eyes.
“Thank goodness, you’re finally awake,” a voice exclaimed above him, tinged with both relief and exasperation. “I’ve been trying to wake you up for so long!
He moved his eyes to the figure standing by the bed. His blurry vision cleared, and he saw Ava’s face.
For a moment, Dylan couldn’t believe what he was seeing. His heart raced, not from the nightmare this time, but from the sight of her—alive, whole, and very real. Was it real or just a dream?
“Why are you looking at me like you are seeing me for the first time?” Ava asked, worried. She reached out to wipe the sweat beads from his brow. “Does your head still hurt?”
Dylan grabbed her hand. “Tell me this is real,” he said with urgency lacing in his voice. “Tell me I am not dreaming.”
Ava’s gaze softened. “You had a nightmare. It’s over now.”
Dylan felt a flood of relief rushing through him. In a swift motion, he pulled her down to his lap, enveloping her with his arms protectively. ‘Thank God, you are still alive,’ he murmured in his head. His face pressed into the crook of her shoulder; he breathed in her familiar scent.
Ava, caught off guard by his sudden movement, froze in his embrace. She didn’t resist, but her body tense. Then she felt his hand rest on her stomach, and her heart skipped a beat.
“Are you pregnant?” he whispered.
Her body stiffened instantly. The word “pregnant” brought with it a flood of painful memories, and in a burst of anger, she shoved his hand away from her abdomen. “Pregnant?” she snapped. “How do you expect me to be pregnant? Every time we had sex, you forced me to take the contraceptive pill. Remember?”
Dylan immediately remembered those hurtful things he had said to her, forcing her to swallow the contraceptive pills. “Ugh!” He winced, his hand instinctively reaching for his head as a headache pulsed through his skull.
Ava’s expression changed momentarily as she sensed he was in pain. But the anger and hurt she felt didn’t let her help him. She stood up quickly, her gaze icy.
“You disgusted me, didn’t you? You never wanted a child with me.”
Dylan’s heart sank as the damage he had caused became painfully clear. He held her wrist instantly. “I regret it now. I won’t say such things again.”
He kicked the blanket aside and got out of bed, ignoring the throbbing headache. “I realize how wrong I was.” He put her hand on his chest as if a gesture to show his sincerity. “I mean it, Ava. I am ready to do anything to make amends. Let’s make a baby.”
Ava’s anger reached the boiling point. She pushed him away, hitting on his chest. “Why would you think I’d ever make a baby with you?” she spat. “We’re getting a divorce.”
“No, don’t mention it.” He wrapped his arms around her, pulling her to his chest. “We are not divorcing.”
“This is not up to you.” She twisted in his arms, trying to break free. “You can’t force me to stay with you.”
“I am not forcing you.” He looked down at her, his gaze full of regret. “I’m begging you. Please, Ava, take me back. Don’t push me away.”
“Let go of me,” she demanded as she fought against him.

“Ava, I just want a chance. Can you give me that?”
The words, the desperation in his voice, stirred something deep within her. Ava stopped struggling and glared at him.
In her past life, she had pleaded for him to listen, to give her a chance to start over, but he hadn’t heard her. Instead, he had tossed the divorce papers in her face, telling her to get out of his life.
The pain of that moment crashed over her like a tidal wave. If only he had listened then, if only he had given her the chance, she wouldn’t have ended her life. She wouldn’t have lost their child. It was a wound that could never truly heal.
“You hurt me deeply.” she croaked as the tears she had fought to suppress threatened to spill. “That wound can’t be healed, no matter what you do. I can’t pretend that nothing has happened and start over with you. This is not possible.”
But Dylan wasn’t buying it. He had a feeling that she still cared about him and that she loved him.
“If so, why are you here?” he asked. “You still care about me, Ava, and I can see that.”
“You are wrong,” she snapped. “I am here because I don’t want Lilianna to be suspicious about us.” This was true but not entirely. She had been worried about him and wanted to make sure he was okay, so she had come rushing to the hospital first thing in the morning.
Masking her true emotions under a stern façade, she added, “Once she leaves, I’ll go back to my house. Don’t think that I’ll waste my time on you.”
She turned to leave.
Dylan hurriedly drew her into his embrace yet again, her back pressed firmly against his chest. “Don’t turn your back to me. It was my fault that I misunderstood. I am sorry. Just trust me for the last time. I’ll prove how serious I am.”
“Trust!” She sneered. “Trust is something that can’t be restored once broken. I can’t forget everything that I went through just because you want me back.” She shook her head. “No… this is not happening, Dylan. It will only remind me of those horrible things that I don’t want to remember.”
She pivoted and stormed toward the door.
“I was wrong for suspecting your father.”
Ava froze, her body stiffening.
“He is innocent.”
